Hayden Simpson in the Fold … and Cubs 2010 Draft Update

Hayden Simpson officially signed with the Cubs Saturday … a deal worth $1.06 million. Simpson threw a bullpen session at Wrigley and will report to Mesa before going to Boise (Class-A short season). Simpson said he will finish the summer with the Boise Hawks before going to the instructional league this fall.

The Cubs took Simpson with the 16th overall pick in this year’s draft, easily the surprise pick of the first round.

Hayden Simpson liked Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine growing up and stated they are going to have to keep him away from Greg Maddux. Simpson said, “He’s going to have to keep me away from him, because I’m going to be bugging him.”

Along with Hayden Simpson, the Cubs have signed 20 of their 50 draft picks.

Hayden Simpson was excited to be at Wrigley Field on Saturday and said being a part of the Cubs organization “is a great feeling.”

Simpson’s fastball tops out at 97 MPH. Simpson features a four-seam and two-seam fastball along with a curveball and changeup. Simpson has been compared to Tim Lincecum due to his 6-foot, 175-pound frame and unconventional delivery.

Tim Wilken joined Dave Kaplan during the Cubs Insider show (WGN Radio) Sunday and discussed Simpson, along with the rest of the Cubs’ draft. Kaplan asked Wilken about a possible sleeper in the draft. Wilken said one player to keep an eye on is their 11th round pick, left-handed pitcher Eric Jokisch from Northwestern University.
