Game Time – 3:05pm CDT
Coverage – TV: None – Radio: MLB.com (Giants Feed)
Location – Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale
Tom Gorzelanny (1-1, 3.07/1.36) vs. Todd Wellemeyer (3-0, 1.35/1.20)
Counting this afternoon’s contest in Scottsdale against the Giants, only six Spring Training games remain on the Cubs 2010 Cactus League Schedule.
Derrek Lee, Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez are all expected back in Lou Piniella’s lineup this afternoon. The regulars should get a bulk of the playing time for the remainder of camp and on Friday against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field … look for the B-team against the Brewers in Maryvale on Wednesday (split squad) and on Saturday at Chase Field.
Expect another record crowd this afternoon for the Chicago Cubs. Today is the final game of the Cactus League for the Giants at Scottsdale Stadium. The Giants are expected to play a majority of their Opening Day lineup in their home finale … San Francisco is 10-4 in Scottsdale this spring. Tom Gorzelanny will make his final tune-up of the spring this afternoon. The next time he takes the ball (at the beginning of a game) will be in Cincinnati on April 10.
Gorzelanny has allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits with nine walks and 14 strikeouts, along with a hit batsman, in 14 2/3 innings (four games, three starts). Gorzelanny recently told XM Radio despite the fact he was named to the starting rotation he must continue to produce. He realizes the competition between him and Carlos Silva is not over and has just begun … with Ted Lilly due back by the third week of April.
Tom Gorzelanny wants to prove 2007 was not a fluke.
The Cubs will see a very familiar face, as well as former teammate this afternoon in Mark DeRosa. Former Cub and Cardinal, Todd Wellemeyer will take the hill for the Giants in likely his final start in the Cactus League.
Todd Wellemeyer has been spectacular for the Giants this spring. In six games, three starts, he has allowed four runs, three earned, on 17 hits with five walks and eight strikeouts in 20 innings.
Wellemeyer has always pitched well against the Cubs … and this afternoon should not be an exception.
