Carlos Zambrano (0-1, 6.00/1.44) vs. Edgar Osuna (0-0, 6.00/1.00)

The Cubs were scheduled to have five split squad games this spring but rain took care of one back on March 7 … Lou Piniella’s crew is 3-1 in split-squad games this spring. After this afternoon the Cubs have just one split-squad day remaining on their spring schedule.

The Cubs will be without Aramis Ramirez again today. Ramirez’s right triceps is still sore but he said it would be okay soon. The Cubs’ third baseman will hit in minor league camp on Saturday. Ramirez can hit but right now he cannot throw.

Kevin Millar is expected to start one of today’s games in left field … and Mike Fontenot will start his first game of the spring at shortstop.

The other half of the Royals roster will play the Brewers in Maryvale while the rest of the A’s face the Reds in Goodyear.

Notes from Arizona

  • According to a report from, Andres Blanco has been taking grounders and began hitting on Friday. Blanco is wearing a light brace when he works out.
  • Xavier Nady has been working out at first base. The Cubs expect him to spend time at first base and in the outfield before the end of Spring Training.

Cubs vs. A’s at Phoenix Municipal Stadium

Tom Gorzelanny threw the ball well in his last start against the White Sox eight days ago. The only run he allowed was on a wild pitch after he walked the bases loaded. Despite all of the walks, Gorzelanny showed improvement from his last spring start.

Today will be Gorzelanny’s second start in the Cactus League … and third appearance. Gorzelanny has allowed three runs, all earned, on one hit with three walks, five strikeouts and a hit batsman in five innings

Ben Sheets has been beyond horrible for the A’s this spring. He gave up nine earned runs to the Reds in his last start without recording an out. Sheets said he felt better but the results tell a different story. The A’s are sticking to the cliché, it is just Spring Training.

Today will be Sheets’ fourth start of the spring. He has allowed 18 runs, 15 earned, on 17 hits with two walks and a strikeout in 4 1/3 innings.

Cubs vs. Royals at HoHoKam Park

Carlos Zambrano will make his fourth start of the spring. Zambrano is coming off a good outing against the Rockies. Zambrano allowed one run on five hits in four innings. Big Z was happy with the way he pitched.

In his first three starts Zambrano has allowed six runs, all earned, on 11 hits with a walk, a hit batsman and two strikeouts in nine innings of work.

Edgar Osuna will make his first start and third appearance of the spring this afternoon. In his first two outings, Osuna has allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Along with Edgar Osuna, Robinson Tejada, John Parrish and Bryan Bullington are scheduled to pitch today for the Royals.
