Spring Training Game Six: Cubs (3-2) vs. Giants (6-1)
Game Time - 2:05pm CST
Coverage - TV: None - Radio: MLB.com (Giants feed)
Location - HoHoKam Park, Mesa

Carlos Zambrano (0-0, 0.00/0.00) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (0-0, 0.00/3.00)

The Cubs will square off against the Giants for the first of two times on the spring this afternoon. The Cubs travel to Scottsdale during the final week of Cactus League play to face the Giants on March 30.

Carlos Zambrano will make his second start of the spring. Like Randy Wells, Zambrano should pitch three innings this afternoon against a new-look Giants offense that should include Mark DeRosa. Zambrano threw the ball extremely well against the Diamondbacks last Friday. Big Z completed two perfect innings of work.

The Cubs offense will see one of the better young pitchers in the league this afternoon in Jonathan Sanchez. Sanchez faced the Diamondbacks in his first outing of the spring as well. Sanchez struck out three, walked three and surrendered three hits in his first two innings of 2010.

Notes from Mesa

  • Lou Piniella said before Tuesday's game that the lineup he ran out (Theriot, Fukudome, Lee, Ramirez, Byrd, Soriano, Fontenot and Soto) could very well be the one he uses on Opening Day.
  • The Cubs will not make their decision on the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation until at least the third week of March. Each pitcher will have at least two more turns before the Cubs make any decisions.

  • Ted Lilly will throw another bullpen session on Wednesday. Lilly is hoping to get into a Spring Training game soon.

Players Not Appearing in Cactus League Action

After five games, there are several players that have yet to make their spring debut ... granted losing two games last Sunday cost a few players time on the field. Here is a list of players that are on the 40-man roster or received non-roster invites to big league camp that have not seen any action:

Pitchers

  • Rafael Dolis*
  • Jeff Gray* (injured, dealing with groin strain with no set timetable for his return)
  • Ted Lilly* (injured)
  • David Patton*
  • Thomas Diamond
  • Vince Perkins

Catchers

  • Steve Clevenger

Infielders

  • Blake Lalli

Outfielders

  • Xavier Nady* (in Wednesday's starting lineup as the Cubs' DH)

Let's Talk Cubs Baseball ...

Still not a bad deal if he is a force July-Sept

  • Neil

Nady might not be able to throw at full strength until around June ... I will have more after the recap. Working on it right now.

    http://muskat.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/03/310_nady_can_hit_but_throwing.html

  • SuzyS

Bad day for the Cubs: Pinella says Nady will not be ready to go until June according to AM670 the SCORE.

That should open the door for Colvin/Snyder/Adduci/Fuld.

  • Austin

    Dear Milton,

How do you live with yourself? Your entire life is based upon making excusing for your stupidity. Take a look in the mirror. You are the only one still talking about it. Move on, and grow up. You get paid millions of dollars to play baseball, and when things don't go your way, you cry. You've made a career out of it. I pity anybody who has to pay attention to you. Thank God some do, because I don't know what you would do with your life if people stopped.

    You're pathetic.

    Austin

  • Neil

Diamond just retired the Giants in order, rather quickly.

Rowand popped out, Velez struck out and Sandoval popped out

  • SuzyS

Good start. So far Z has been the only "stinker". I see from box score Parisi also threw a scoreless inning.

I wonder how they are really looking.

Soriano and Baker havn't done much to

begin with...and Ramirez hasn;t hit his stride yet...still it's early.

    RISP this game so far....1/9

  • Neil

Thomas Diamond is in the game

  • SuzyS

    Gee, I like Diamonds!!!

  • fryegye

I like Aaron's lineup, but I might still keep Fukudome as a platoon. Certainly a disappointment for the money, but high OBP and great defense in RF is a plus in the mix.

Soriano needs to light it up in ST or be joining Silva in high paid obscurity. Ground balls won't get it for Sori. I don't think anything will change with Silva.

I like Nady. I'm optimistic about Byrd.

Re: comments from Seattle - I'm throwing away all my board games (guilt by association). I can hardly wait until Seattle's left-of-center fans become racists (somewhere around a .187 BA I suppose).

    Z. Oh Z pain of experience. I still expect 16 wins, however...

  • woody34

Did anyone else see article about Z giving up his hitting today to allow Nady into the lineup??

  • Neil

Aramis just doubled in Hoffpauir, who was pinch running for Lee, for the Cubs' first run.

  • Neil

Grabow worked around a 2-out throwing error by Aramis Ramirez in the 4th. 5-0 Giants

  • agustin rexach

Agustin hates it when BigZ sucks...

    Should I stop?

  • John G.

The Giants' broadcasters are wondering what Soto and Z did to lose so much weight. Maybe someone should ask them what B.B. did to GAIN so much weight.

  • Neil

Z horrible in the third ... nine Giants went to the plate, scored five runs.

  • SuzyS

    Good Z/Bad Z....Arghhhhhhh !

  • John_CC

    Same old song and danZZe!

  • John G.

Z gives up a slam. Makes you wonder if his brain issues took over after the questionable HBP.

  • Neil

After two easy innings, Zambrano gave up three straight hits in the third. Hit a batter then served up a slam to Sandoval.

    5-0 Giants

  • Jim C (Tinley Park, Illinois)

Jack Z the GM out in Seattle might want to tell bradley to shut up play ball.

  • John G.

Mariners come to the Cell in April. Maybe we can fill the place with Cub fans and give Uncle Milty a nice warm Chicago Welcome.

  • Neil

Nady just singled to right in his first at bat

  • Neil

Zambrano just retired the Giants in order to start the game.

  • agustin rexach

Agustin Likes it when Big Z looks fine and is not doing silly predictions.

  • SuzyS

Chicago Phil (as opposed to Arizona Phil)

has weighed in on the bullpen.

He says Toronto is zeroing in on outfield

prospects like Fuld or Colvin in exchange fo4r Frasor:

  • John G.
  • SuzyS

    :) :) John...looks like your Phil might've handled Bradley a "little differently".

  • John G.

    Hey!! I know a guy....

  • Aaron

I really do hope that Nady is healthy, and we could have a lineup like this:

    Theriot-2B

    Castro-SS

    Lee-1B

    ARAM-3B

    Byrd-CF

    Nady-LF

    Snyder/Colvin-RF

    Soto-C

bench: Hill, Fukudome, Soriano, Tracy, Baker

I know it'll never happen this year, but one can dream, right?

  • SuzyS

    Yes,I like that line-up also.

  • Bryan

That would be awfully nice to see.

  • jw

    Pinella's only mistake was apologizing.

It is admirable that Hendry took the blame and defends his team and organization, but for a man in his position giving any weight to Milton's accusations save to clear up misperceptions like the mail, is a kind of weird recognition for Bradley, clearly a delusional, unstable person.

  • Bryan

While Bradley's truly a sick idiot, how come everyone in baseball knew that for years and yet our GM signs him for $21m. Hendry can apologize all he wants. That and the Soriano signing should truly signal his ouster after this season. There aren't too many places in life (and business) where you can make a $21m mistake and still keep your job.

  • calicub

I'm glad to see Bradley gone. Before he was traded I had hoped for some sort of reconciling and w/ the JamMan maybe he could get better. but the fact is is that milton is an underachiever who caved under high expectations and contracts. He underachieved in oakland and LA too and claimed to have recieved hate mail.

Personally I feel bad for his mother. He's making himself look like an asshole. Excuse my language. Any credit i may have given him or hope of reconciliation and a turn around over the course of 09 was wasted. You are the biggest POS milton.

  • ripsnorter

Bradley: I sure would not have signed him in the first place, and then I would not have traded him away for Silva. I simply would have hired a bench coach for Bradley alone, and told the bench coach that if Bradley opened his mouth one time, to insert your right fist with all the force you can muster right in his mouth. I think after a few times that even Milton would learn to keep his trap shut.

  • ripsnorter

I understood that Nomar was on "roids" and that's why BoSox dealt him away. He came to Chicago broken and stayed broken.

Byrd hit cleanup most often for Texas last year. Yup, it's true. 89 RBI outta the cleanup spot. He had 193 AB out of #4 hole. Check my work here:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=5033

Yeah, he hit #6 for 158 AB, and 94 AB at the #5 hole. And he hit just .154 out of the #2 hole last year--in 13 AB.

  • SuzyS

my bad re Byrd..."a lot" in the 2 hole.

Time to doublecheck my reading with statements.

  • SuzyS

Good work, Rip...but it still proves

Byrd could be versatile re where he bats in the line-up.

  • pete187

Hendry doesn't pull any punches in his Bradley response today:

    http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/03/hendry-bradley-needs-to-look-in-the-mirror.html

He also says it was his mistake alone for making the signing.

  • SuzyS

Interesting lineup with Adduci starting in right...Santo made the comment yesterday that Lou really likes Adduci's

speed....Byrd was in the 2 hole a lot in Texas...seeing Nady for the first time is intriqueing.

On another note...Dempster has it right about Bradley:

    http://muskat.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/03/310_dempster_any_time_you_stru.html

  • cc002600

    Dempster is a stud.

You have to just love his attitude.

  • nick

Dempster has became one my favorite players on the team. I love the guys work ehic and they way he goes about things. I think he could have a huge year! Good article, thanks for posting that Suzy!

  • Neil

    Today's lineup:

    Theriot - SS

    Byrd - CF

    Lee - 1B

    Ramirez - 3B

    Ndy - DH

    Soriano - LF
