Ryan Dempster (1-0, 0.00/0.00) vs. Lucas Harrell (0-0, 9.00/2.00)
Another split-squad day for the Chicago Cubs ... half of Lou Piniella's roster will face Dusty Baker and the Reds at HoHoKam while the other half completes the "Big League Weekend" at Cashman Field in Las Vegas.
The Reds joined the Cactus League this year and today will be the first time the Cubs have played the Reds in a Spring Training game since 1945 ... today will also be the first appearance for Dusty Baker at HoHoKam Park since 2006.
The Cubs will be the home team at Cashman Field this afternoon.
Cubs vs. Reds at HoHoKam Park
Sean Marshall will make his third appearance of the spring, first start, today against the Reds. Marshall has given up a run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings this spring.
Homer Bailey has made only one appearance this spring, a B-Team game, and reportedly his outing was impressive. Bailey tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Today will be Bailey's Cactus League debut.
Derrek Lee is expected back in the lineup after being scratched on Friday afternoon.
Cubs vs. White Sox at Cashman Field
Ryan Dempster's first outing against the A's last Monday went as planned ... two perfect innings in his first spring outing. Dempster should throw three innings this afternoon in his second spring tune-up.
Lucas Harrell will make his first start, second appearance, of the spring this afternoon for Ozzie Guillen. Harrell allowed two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and no strikeouts. While the other half of his team is at Camelback Ranch facing the Brewers, Guillen will try to beat the Cubs.
Let's Talk Cubs Baseball ...

Derrek Lee is out until at least Tuesday with a bruise on his left foot. X-rays showed no damage.
Today's lineup against the Reds:
Castro - SS
Barney - 2B
Ramirez - 3B
Colvin - CF
Tracy - 1B
Soriano - LF
Scales - DH
Hill - C
Adduci - RF
Scales as a DH? Interesting.
Starting lineup against the White Sox:
Theriot, SS
Kosuke, RF
Byrd, CF
Millar, 1B
Soto, DH
Fontenot, 2B
Baker, 3B
Chirinos, C
Fuld, LF
Thanks Brandon.
Barney with a single to center on a 2-2 pitch from Bailey
Logan Watkins is starting at second today.
1-2-3 for Marshall in the first
Nevemind on Watkins, Reds' broadcast had it wrong.
Francisco hit a homer to the right of center off of Sean Marshall, 1-0 Reds
1-2-3 for Marshall in the third. Good outing for Sean, Reds did not hit him very hard. Darwin Barney made a good play on a ball in the second to take a hit away.
James Adduci doubled with one-out in the third. Castro advanced him to third with a ground out to second. Barney delivered with a 2-out single to right, his second hit of the game. Adduci scored, 1-1 after three
Juan Francisco just hit his second home run of the game, a 2-run shot to center off of Casey Coleman.
3-1 Reds in top of fourth
Neil the comment earlier about Coleman, I should have been more specific, I meant Coleman for the rotation, but he will likely need some more polishing, as would Cashner if he were to be a starter. Cashner could go either way though.(bullpen or rotation)
Patrick, I agree on Coleman. He needs more time. I re-listened to Larry Rothschild's interview on ESPN 1000 yesterday. Rothschild likes Coleman and his composure on the mound. As for Cashner, Rothschild thinks he performing like a young player this spring.
While Coleman is not pitching 22-year old (turns 23 in July), Cashner is pitching like a 23-year old with a bright future ahead of him.
Another nice play at third by Baker
In the Reds game, Soriano just singled to center ... was running on a pitch to Scales
Coleman just gave up his second homer to the Reds, a solo shot by Paul Janish
Second nice play by Millar at first base
Neil...looking at the boxscore for the Cincy game...I see ARAM only got one ab before he was replaced...did something happen to ARAN...or is it just trying to give other guys ab ab?
I thought the same. I have not heard Aramis was hurt.
Nice double by Baker
LaHair just tied the game against the Reds. Following a 2-out walk by Barney, LaHair hit a 3-run homer to right
nice hits by Baker and Chirinos...I wish I could've seen the LaHair bomb on tv. Was it a moonshot?
Hak-Ju Lee is playing short in Mesa
has he batted yet...how does Lee look, and any more updates from Mesa?
i hate this tv angle on mlb.tv for the cubs vs sox game...
Boy, Fuld looks incredibly overmatched this spring...that's a pretty sad thing given his ascent last year...same for Hoffpauir
I'm strictly on radio today (WS game). Funny how humbling this game is....Soto seems like he;s ready to contribute...after a horrible year last year...I'm sure Fuld and Hoffpauir are better then they are showing.
(Personally,I blame Lou for wrecking Hoffpauir)...but it's time for both to bounce back.
Soriano doubled in Mesa, Tracy thrown out at the plate. Scales doubled in Soriano ... 5-4 Cubs in the sixth.
Lee is coming to the plate
Hak-Ju Lee just doubled in two runs in Mesa
that's my boy!!! thanks Neil
Hak-Ju!!!!
LaHair just doubled in Mesa. Colvin with another hit.
I like seeing Cubs' outfielders throwing runners out at the plate. Great throw by Fuld!
Ramirez left the game with sore triceps, listed as day to day
Ramirez hasn't really gotten going yet...Hope he's ok...we're going toneed him.
I'm watching the Cubs/Sox game and they have said a couple of times that the CF camera was having trouble with the high winds and that is where the different camera angles are coming into play.
Chris Robinson doubled in a pair. Adduci just drove in Robinson, 11-4 Cubs in Mesa
wow! that's gotta be a whole lotta fun for everyone on team, specially all the kids rocking the ball all over. nice. very nice.
Cubs beat Reds in Mesa, 11-4. Colvin, LaHair, Barney, Parisi and Hak-Ju Lee stood out in the win.
unless he absolutely implodes, it looks like Colvin has the last OF spot wrapped up. If the season started today, it'd be:
C-Soto
1B-Lee
2B-Fontenot
SS-Theriot
3B-ARAM
LF-Soriano
CF-Byrd
RF-Fukudome
bench: Hill, Baker, Nady, Colvin, Tracy
Their plan might be to give Castro a couple months, see if Fontenot can handle full-time duties, and if not, they'll trade him after June (I believe that's what'd keep Castro from Super 2 status...am I right? Neil, I know you mentioned the date the other day, but can't remember). If Fontenot does well, and Baker continues to struggle into the season, then it just might be Baker that finds himself traded/released if Castro does well.
It's a shame that LaHair and Snyder can't make the roster, as I think they'd do very well. I also think it's a shame Dolis and Mateo didn't separate themselves, because as it stands now, one might have to be dealt just to get Russell on the team (if that's the route they take). I hope that's not the case, because both have above average arms. The more logical moves that I mentioned the other day, might be trading/releasing: Fontenot, Fuld (or Adduci), and Hoffpauir
Aaron...it's still early but it does look like Colvin's the man.
I don't see the Cubs trading Adduci just now....3 options/he's hitting/ and according to Santo...Lou really likes him.
Barney's hitting also...(with options) so it seems Blanco is on the bubble if he can't get on the field and make an impact...(he has no options).
Watching our young outfielders...I get the feeling that we could indeed have a better outfield without Soriano/Fukodome...and it really is a shame they are blocked.
It's still early though...and remember Maddux's advise to the pitchers..."don't
show your best stuff in ST"....and I'm sure that applies to other team's pitchers throughout the league...
So, it's still a little early to judge yet.
But it is going in the directions you're
saying.
Great stuff a must read

Gaub looked good.
did you hear Steve Stone's comment on Gaub he said the cubs know Gaub's got a major league arm and some nasty stuff, they want to see if he has major league control.
Jackson is SOOOOOO fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes he is ... very impressive. I really like what I have seen from him. It is also about time the Cubs had some athletes in their system.
YAAAAAAAAYYYY Hoffy rub scoring double!!!!!
Did you see the article link I posted above it's about Colvin I think you'll love it!!!!!!
Patrick...Thanks...it is a good article...Colvin has really opened alot of eyes this Spring...looks like we'll
see him at Wrigley this season!!!
I was thinking about how to get Colvin in full time, and Soriano out. I would play Soriano 80% of the time until the middle of June and hope his numbers are decent. Then I would permanently bench him until he became mad enough to waive his no-trade by the July 31st deadline. Yes, it's a little seamy, and the Cubs would have to eat at least 60% of his salary, but there just has to be a way to get rid him him other than an outright release.
Kerry Wood was scratched today with arm soreness.
Nomar is Wood's strength coach.
