Guzman and Gray Sidelined with Minor Injuries

Cubs' pitchers and catchers officially reported to Fitch Park on Wednesday, while the news on Ted Lilly was positive (in more than one way), the Cubs announced two minor setbacks in the bullpen.

Angel Guzman had arthroscopic surgery on his knee two weeks ago after tearing his meniscus during a workout in Venezuela last month. Jeff Gray suffered a moderate groin strain during fielding practice this week and is expected to be a couple of weeks behind.

Angel Guzman is expected to be ready for Opening Day according to Jim Hendry. Jeff Gray's injury is a minor one and is expected to take it easy over the first couple weeks of camp.

Both Jeff Gray and Angel Guzman are in-house candidates to serve as setup men to Carlos Marmol.

Well, now we know why the Cubs were trying to trade Guzman... he's been injured for over a month already.

I would even think more that the reason he was not traded is because he was hurt.

Let us just hope he gets well soon. We need him to be healthy.

Now that we know both Guzman and Gray could be question marks going into opening day I think the Cubs should make a deal as soon as possible.

Knee injuries for a pitcher is never a good thing and you never know how the recovery could go. It does remain possible depending on how Guzman's knee heals he could be like Lilly and start the season on the DL.

If the Cubs do not make a move and Gray is also not ready then the Cubs could be in some trouble.

The interesting thing here is that if JH does not make a trade then we could find out how really good Caridad is. He might then become the big surprise early in the season. Jeff Stevens, Berg and Atkins could also become more important and may be given a shot at starting with the team on opening day.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.
