Cubs Name Minor League Managers and Coaches

Vote 0 Votes

The Chicago Cubs announced their minor league managers and coaches last Thursday. Ryne Sandberg, who was promoted to Triple-A earlier in the month, will have Mike Mason and Von Joshua on his staff in Iowa.

Von Joshua replaced Gerald Perry, who is now in the Red Sox organization, as the Cubs hitting coach last year. After the final game of the year, Jim Hendry announced that Lou Piniella's staff would return for the 2010 campaign ... with the exception of Von Joshua. The Cubs hired Rudy Jaramillo not long after and Joshua agreed to stay in the organization.

After serving as the organization's minor league catching coordinator for a season, Jody Davis will return to the dugout in 2010 as the manager of the Boise Hawks.

Another former Cub, Jeff Fassero will serve as Davis' pitching coach.

Bill Dancy will replace Ryne Sandberg as the manager of the Tennessee Smokies. Dancy was in the Phillies' organization from 1978 to 2008 and spent 2009 in the Kansas City Royals' organization. Dancy made it to the big leagues in 2005 and spent two years as the Phillies' third base coach. Dennis Lewallyn and Tom Beyers will remain in Double-A ... both Lewallyn and Beyers were on Sandberg's staff in 2009.

Carmelo Martinez ... there's a name I haven't seen in a couple decades. I remember the cover of Baseball Digest in the early 80's with Martinez, Kevin McReynolds and Tony Gwynn featured as the future star power outfield in SD ... I suppose one for three isn't so bad!

Maddux should be the pitching coach in Daytona, or the pitching coordinator for the whole minor league system. But I believe Daytona would be ideal for him, considering he could golf there everyday.
