Ted Lilly (12-8, 3.02/1.06) vs. Charlie Morton (4-9, 5.01/1.53)

Somewhere Ernie Banks is smiling ... LET'S PLAY TWO! The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates have a full day of baseball ahead of them with a day-night doubleheader that begins at 1:00pm C.T.

Game One is the make-up from the delayed rainout back on August 16. After three hours the game was finally called and the Cubs headed west on the trip that would end their season. Rich Harden was scheduled to face Ross Ohlendorf in the finale of the three-game series on a Sunday afternoon seven weeks ago.

The Cubs could be without Aramis Ramirez for the rest of the season. The Cubs have discussed shutting Ramirez down but the slugger wants to play. Cold weather on Tuesday night to go along with the sore shoulder were the reasons given for Ramirez being out of the lineup.

Kevin Gregg is the latest Cub to be officially shutdown for the year. An MRI on Monday revealed cracked cartilage in his rib cage. Gregg wanted to pitch and the Cubs said no. Gregg blamed the amount of innings early in the season for his problems in August. He admitted he told Lou Piniella he would take the ball despite the fact he knew he was not 100%.

Today it all starts with Ted Lilly, for the last time this season, and just winning a ballgame ...

Ted Lilly will make his last start of the year this afternoon ... and his first start in 12 games. Lilly put together a very good outing his last time out against the Cardinals. Lilly received a no decision (sixth time in 26 starts this season Lilly did not receive a decision) in a 3-2 Cubs loss but Lilly held the Cardinals to two runs on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings ... his longest outing since September 2 against the Astros.

Lilly has done his job this season and many feel he took over the ranking as the Cubs' number one pitcher with his consistent and calm performance throughout the year.

Ted Lilly could easily be shooting for win number 18 or 19 today. Lilly was on the wrong end of four shutouts, he took the loss in each of those, and has posted six no decisions ... since the break Ted Lilly is 3-2 in eight starts with a 2.65 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP.

This afternoon will be Lilly's 13th start at Wrigley this season. He is 8-1 in the first 12 with a 1.60 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP ... just 10 walks in 84 1/3 innings to go along with 71 strikeouts.

Lilly is 1-1 in two starts against the Bucs this year with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

  • Ronny Cedeno - 0-for-3
  • Ryan Doumit - 5-for-15 with a double and a walk
  • Garrett Jones - 0-for-3
  • Andy LaRoche - 2-for-8 with a home run and 3 walks
  • Andrew McCutchen - 0-for-6 with a walk
  • Lastings Milledge - 1-for-8
  • Brandon Moss - 5-for-8 with 2 doubles and 3 walks
  • Steve Pearce - 2-for-4 with a double
  • Ramon Vazquez - 0-for-3
  • Delwyn Young - 0-for-5 with a walk

Charlie Morton has shown a lot of improvement since he last faced the Cubs on August 14. The Cubs' offense jumped all over Morton to the tune of 10 runs on seven hits in one inning of work. The Cubs won the game 17-2 and Morton has not been the same since ... but in a positive way for the Pirates.

Morton is coming off a loss to the Reds (four runs on six hits in seven innings) but it was the second straight outing he completed seven innings of work.

Charlie Morton is 1-3 in his last four starts with a 5.04 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.

This afternoon will be Charlie Morton's second outing of the year against the Cubs. He is 0-1 with a 90.00 ERA ad a 10.00 WHIP ... for his career, 0-2 in two starts with a 37.80 ERA and a 5.40 WHIP.

  • Jeff Baker - 0-for-1
  • Jake Fox - 1-for-1 with a double and a walk
  • Kosuke Fukudome - 1-for-3 with a home run
  • Sam Fuld - 2-for-2 with a triple
  • Koyie Hill - 1-for-1 with a triple
  • Derrek Lee - 2-for-3 with a walk
  • Aaron Miles - 0-for-3
  • Aramis Ramirez - 1-for-2
  • Geovany Soto - 1-for-1 with a double
  • Ryan Theriot - 1-for-2 with a walk

Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

  • John G.

Maglio just hit a double with the bases loaded to put the Tigers up 7-2. Could be a dagger to the heart of the Twins.

  • John G.

Pat Hughes and Dave Otto were just talking about the number of position players that have converted to pitcher, especially catchers. Most notably Carlos Marmol.

  • John G.

Aaron, since we're talking about internal potential, whatever happened to that kid that Hendry gave $500K to for signing? Matt Cerda? He was the one that ESPN made a big deal about because he was the last out for the infamous Danny Almonte who remained undrafted while Cerda was picked by the Cubs. The best info I could find on line is that he only played like 7 games this year for Boise. Did he get injured? Or was he so bad that he was cut? In either case it's too bad, I was kinda hoping he would become some kind of cult hero, rising to the top and becoming a superstar.

  • Aaron

Cerda broke his hand earlier this year, and was just at Fitch Park with the rehab group and others coming over from Asia. Apparently they've moved him to second base.

    That's about all I know.

  • John G.

Thanks Aaron. That would explain his not playing since June 26, but still listed on the Boise roster. I still have hopes that someday he will face Danny Almonte in the majors. But it's a slim chance.

  • Neil

Aaron, who am I thinking of they are converting to a pitcher. I thought it was Cerda

  • Neil

John, please don't quote me but I have a memory of reading that the Cubs were trying to convert him to a pitcher.

  • paul k

Suzy, I think we now see why Lou wasn't dumb enough to use that lineup in June/July.

  • SuzyS

Fox was on fire back then and I think Hoffpauir hadn't lost his stroke at that point...but possibly you're right.

  • SuzyS

    AHHH the Computer Age!!!

  • JimK

Speaking of weird or frustrating, Suzy. I thought I just did a post on Theriot's 3rd hit--saying that he can leg out singles even if he has trouble legging out stolen bases. Up pops my earlier response to Neil.

  • JimK

Agree on Ted, Neil....It looks like some things went wrong in the first inning, and the Little People lineup couldn't muster much offense the whole game.

    It will be different tonight.

  • SuzyS

    JimK...what goes around comes around.

I just did a long post and lost it as my session expired....Boooo.

  • Neil

Extremely aggressive today. With only six left, what can we expect?

  • JimK

Agree on Ted, Neil....It looks like some things went wrong in the first inning, and the Little People lineup couldn't muster much offense the whole game.

    It will be different tonight.

  • Neil

Good season for Ted Lilly ...

  • Neil

Third time in two games Theriot has been thrown out trying to steal second.

  • Neil

Theriot with the Cubs' second hit in the sixth inning ....

Aaron, I heard talk about shutting Covin down for the year. Could have to do with his TJ Surgery last year

  • cc002600

Boy, other than Holliday and Hudson, there is nobody on that FA list that really excites me. Weak.

  • Neil

Theriot with th Cubs' first hit .. infield single with help, but still

  • Aaron

and yet another season with nothing to play for, and we can't even get our younger prospects like Jeff Stevens, Caridad, Samardzija, Fox, and Colvin regular playing time.

Isn't it amazing that Piniella said, "we're going to play him (referring to Colvin) everyday down the stretch"?!? Perhaps it's not very surprising that it hasn't happened given the fact that he threatened changes earlier this year, only to fail to execute the changes.

I'm actually getting excited for this offseason. We have the opportunity to make some major changes. Among those possible changes, include: catcher, 2B, LF, CF, RF, IF, middle relief, and 5th starter.

    Internal candidates include:

    C-W. Castillo, Clevenger, and Robinson

2B-Tony Thomas, Castro, or Flaherty and/or LeMahieu depending on winter ball and ST if they get invited

    LF-Fox, Hoffpauir

    CF-Fuld

    RF-Colvin, Hoffpauir

    relief-Gaub, Parker, Papelbon, Stevens

5th Starter-Gorzelanny, Samardzija, Cashner, Jay Jackson, Coleman

External candidates include (FA and trade):

    catcher-Miguel Olivo, Pudge, Torrealba

    2B-Hudson, Uggla, Lopez, Iwamura

    LF-Holliday, Bay

    CF-Ankiel, Podsednik

    RF-Abreu, Guerrero, Dye

IF-Chris Davis, Mitchell Moreland, Brandon Wood, Sean Rodriguez, Josh Fields

    middle relief-Lyon, Dotel, Escobar, Beimel

5th starter (or higher)-Lackey, Ardolis Chapman, Garland, Brett Myers, Penny, Sheets

  • SuzyS

Isn't it nice to look forward to something with hope?...unlike this season.

  • Grant

im getting excited for castro he will be very good

  • Neil

Not a good start to the day, Lilly is wild. Layoff has been bad for the Bulldog.

  • JimK

Our combined 6 Little People starters are making about $3 mil--a little more than Miles and about 1/4th what Dome makes. It's a screwy system, but some elements of it are workable. It's certain that the guys making about $400,000 would be making a lot less than that in a real-life job. (Hebe off now for an hour or two.)

  • cc002600

and oh by the way....one more thing on Derosa.

I don't think he'll cost as much as you think. One thing is for sure, he would DEFINTELY take a discount to come back to Cubs.

He has not hid his affection for Cubs.

  • cc002600

    Suz,

I unberstand what you are saying, BUT think about this. I'm not a doctor, but the wrist injury that Lee suffered a few years ago had to be much much more severe than Derosa's injury this year, becuase Derosa is still playing right now.

Lee had major surgery and was done in May. I think its apples and oranges in terms of severity. If Derosa can still play right now, it can't be that bad.

But I'll compromise with you,...I can interest you in a Orlando Hudson ???

    :-)

And I agree with JimK on VLAD.....no way, no how at 35. He's been breaking down and there's no way I pony up millions for a guy on the downside of his career with huge injury issues.

  • SuzyS

cc002600...saw your post on Kap's Corner the other day...you had some jerks to deal with.

The FA list is definitely unexciting this year...but the Cubs don't have a lot of cash to flash anyway....and what we really need (youth) will have to come from either our system or trades.

As JimK pointed out, Hudson is both older and more expensive then we would like...but a good player.

I like JimK and Aarons targets of Bartlett from the Rays/Davis or Moreland

from Texas...or maybe my own crush on EY Jr from Colorado...(Imagine a guy stealing 40/50 bases for the Cubs...with

    excellent defense and some power?

But those are the types of moves that would energize me.

Other than that...we might just lay in the weeds like the Cards did last year

    and make the blockbusters inseason.

    Remember...Halladay and Pujols might

    be available next season!!!

  • JimK

Joe S....I mostly agree with your 2009 assessments--on the previous thread. I think you and cc00 above make the "Stand pat with a couple of additions" case--and an eye on 2010. I'm in the get younger in 2010 with an eye out for Lee's, Lilly's and ARAM'S replacements.

Joe, you like Vlad Gurerrero as a FA signing--and I don't. I know that he could hit in a wheel chair, but he can't play the OF in one. At age 35, and limited to fewer than 400 AB's this year, he's seems highly questionable.

I do like Hudson's productivity, enthusiasm and defense for 2nd base--except for cost. He's 32 and is going to get 3 or 4 years at about 8 mil per from somebody. I have my eye on how we look in 2012 when Lee, Lilly, Dome and maybe ARAM are gone. So, my name additions are younger. My "dream" counterparts to Joe's Vlad and Hudson includes prying Jason Bartlett (30) away from the payroll challenged Rays to play SS. He was .340-12-59 with 24 SB's at last check. Getting Bartlett would enable Theriot playing 2nd base. I also like the young slugger and top glove, Chris Davis (23-L/R) as a power prospect for 1st or 3rd.

  • SuzyS

I think we would have killed for this lineup in June/July.

  • Neil

    Game one lineup:

Lee out for the first game with a sore foot, expected back tonight

    Theriot - SS

    Fukudome - CF

    Baker - 3B

    Hoffpauir - 1B

    Fox - LF

    Scales - RF

    Soto - C

    Blanco - 2B

    Lilly - P

  • cc002600

very simple ....here's what I would do for next year.

    given the financial restraints.

After they dump bradley....sign Derosa and put Fuld in CF, platoon Fox/Fuk in RF.

Derosa and Fox would add power...fuld would add speed and defense.

    Fuld - CF

    Riot - SS

    Lee - 1B

    ARAM - 3B

    Fox/Fuk - RF

    Sori - LF

    Dero - 2B

    Soto - C

  • SuzyS

While I love Dero, cc002600, I have to respectfully disagree.

DeRo will be 35 and coming off WRIST surgery this offseason. Remember how wrist surgery affected Lee?

Depending on his wrist surgery, Dero

will command a decent payday at 2-3

years...we NEED to get younger and NOT

block youth development with a 3 year

    older player signing.

Also, I really think Theriot needs to move to move to second and either

sign a ss to go with Blanco or give Castro a shot to platoon with Blanco

to begin with...He's young...but has been in the system for 5 years.

Baker can back up Theriot and Aram.

    Whatever package they put together

re Milton (I anticipate a multi-player deal to make it more palatable to both

teams) should determine the "RBI Bat"

that Milton should have been...and Lou keeps talking about. If the Bradley trade doesn't do it then another trade will be needed...hopefully we can throw in Miles in one of those trades.

  • nick

Hey everyone, been awhile since I have posted, been pretty crazy the last few weeks. Neil, thanks again for the great updates.

  • Neil
