According to a report from Bruce Levine, ESPN 1000 in Chicago, Carlos Zambrano will be placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday. The Cubs will likely recall Jeff Stevens from Triple-A Iowa to take his place on the roster.
Carlos Zambrano flew back to Chicago on Saturday morning for a MRI on his back.
Updated 5:45pm C.T. - The Cubs officially placed Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day with back spasms retroactive to August 2. Jeff Stevens was recalled to take Zambrano's place on the active roster.
Will update when the moves are officially announced ...

dang this reallly sucks...
Rich Hill had season-ending shoulder surgery on Friday.
dang he had the stuff i still dont c y we got rid of him.
Is this something that just developed or perhaps something the Cubs docs missed?
Peavy would like nice about now, on the NSide.
So 10 days minimum before Lilly and/or Z get back? If they don't rush Lilly because of this. I really don't see how this team pull through the next 10 games as is. Not the way have played the last two and not with whatever the rotation is going to be for a couple turns.
It would best for everyone if the Cards would just pull away so we can end the dreaming and get to the heavy work of fixing this team.
neil when is zambrano active to come off the dl again? i heard he only will miss a start or 2
If they retro it to last Saturday, Zambrano would be eligible on August 18...two missed starts.
Ya know...I'm not all that disappointed. Carlos is becoming a freaking BUST. He is NOT our ace. I'd give that to Lilly over the last two years to be honest.
Carlos has 7 wins as we head into mid-August. Not what you expect from your ace.
Heck, I'll miss his bat more than I will his arm at this point.
Ever since a couple years ago when he was having all the cramp issues...and they worked with him to ease up on the strikeouts so his pitch count wouldnt go so high so fast--he hasnt been the same.
As for going forward this year...he has only gotten us 7 wins...so we can get past that. Hopefully Lilly gets back pretty quick...and then we keep Gorz in the rotation and hope he keeps up the good work.
I agree Joe, I have been down on Z for a couple years now too. His antics on and off the field are tiresome. He is selfish and childish and will never reach his full potential because, quite frankly, I think he too dumb.
But even though he's only given us 7 wins, value over the replacement Gorzelanny or Marshall is significant. They have to go 2 turns of the rotation with Z and Lilly. They've gotten away with missing one of their starters at a time most of the season, but not two.
Anyway, the Josh Hamilton rumors are more fun. I feel bad for him, for his addiction, but not that bad. I'm glad I don't see/hear more about ball players personal lives, cuz I bet I'd dislike most of them. Just look at this idiot:

Visiting relatives in Colorado Springs so was able to see the Zambranoless game last night...most UNenjoyable. Rockies fans were really into it and smell a four game sweep; the way the Cubs looked makes it hard to argue. It was nice to see Coors Field for the first time but observing the flawed Cubs up close and personal really hurt.
I did, however, really enjoy a AAA game the other night between the Sky Sox and Nashville Sounds. Got to see Eric Young, Jr. and Brewer stars of the future Mat Gamel and Alcides Escobar, plus, a blast from the past, Cubs fans, good ole Corey Patterson (just signed by the Brewers to a minor league contract). I may not get back to Denver for any more of that series but will likely see one or two more minor league contests while here.
Charles, thanks for the update. Sorry you could not see a better game.
Appreciate it, Neil. Miss reading the blog during the Cub games...still lots of frustrations and uncertainties to be expected with this most inconsistent Cub performance.
Charles....Enjoy Colo. Springs. Our second child was born in the army hospital there at Ft. Carson in 1962. She cost $5.25 and that turned out to be meal charges for my wife. What a bargain!
I was an infantry officer, and we lived on post. I did a fair amount of troop training in the Pike National Forest, and we looked out at Cheyenne Mountain and Pikes Peak from our quarters.
Dharles, I was hoping you were at one of the upcoming games...oh well...enjoy your vacation.
I'm reading that Vicente Padilla has ticked off Texas management and he's been DFA'd. Think we might take a flier just to try and put a veteran arm and see what he can do in a start or two? Report is he's been a head case this year down there. I dont know.
On that note....with the sudden injury bug....would this be the time to see if Smoltzy wants to come back to the N.L. and try and go out on a better note? Might not be the worst thing we could do and see what he can do for a start or two. Without the injury to Z I wouldnt have suggested Smoltz....but we need to try something...so why not.
Joe, Bruce Levine mentioned this morning that the Cubs could look into Smoltz.
Did you see what Marlon Byrd said about him? WOW!
Yeah I just read an article...not sure if it's the same one you read...other players chimed in too....
Maybe we don't need him after all...lol
