According to a report from the Sun-Times, the Cubs placed Ryan Dempster on the 15-day DL with a fractured right big toe. No time table on how long Dempster will be out.
Kevin Hart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa just a day after being optioned down in favor of Angel Guzman.
Carlos Zambrano will start on short rest Tuesday night against the Braves.
Updated - 4:29pm C.T. - Kevin Hart will start Wednesday afternoon against the Braves ... and additional information.
The Cubs have not released how Dempster broke his toe.
Will update if more information is made available ...
Update 4:29pm C.T. - According to the Sun-Times, Ryan Dempster will be x-rayed in two weeks with the next step expected then ... this could end up being a four to six week stint on the disabled list according to some reports.

I broke 2 toes (granted it wasnt the big toe) but he should rest for 10 days and should walk fine with "bearable" pain and a side session, or atleast be able to play catch after 1o days.
Does everybody have to be injure at least once this year. It feel like everybody on the Cubs was injure at least once this year.
No big deal with the All Star Break.
One missed start and everyone can be moved up a day.
The only day this complicates is Sunday and it's double header..
Maybe Aaron can get his wish and Ascanio can pitch a start. I feel sorry because he has been trying so hard to get Dunn and maybe this will ease the pain!!!lol
nothing can ease the pain of Hendry signing Bradley over Dunn. We'll be lucky to get 10 hr, 40 RBI out of Bradley with a .260 avg and .370 OBP (if we're even that lucky) At this rate, Bradley projects to about a .250-.260 avg, .360-.370 OBP, 12 hr, 38 RBI....LMAO
Meanwhile, Dunn sits at:
.266 avg, .402 OBP, 22 hr, 59 RBI, and we're nearing the half-way point in the season...LOL....how does that turd sandwich taste (Bradley) Mr. Hendry?!?
Mr. Hendry....You are THE dumbest GM in the game right now....(okay, a close 2nd to Ed Wade...but you're damn close)
Ugh...
Everytime I look at those stats, I lament and cry in the inside...
Dunn recruited us just as much as "P.O.S." did..
eh...22 hr, 77 RBI for a career high at 31 years old versus seasonal averages of 40 hr 100 RBI at 29 years old for Dunn....I guess having Dunn was just too much of a risk for Jimbo....LOL
Guys, even the Nats consider Dunn to be
solely DH material for the AL...give it up...Abreau or Ibanez would have been better choices for a short term deal...
right now I'd settle for Sanchez.
lolololol!!!! got you started!!!
Breaking his big-toe on his push-off foot is not as simple as you have all made it.
Maybe Demp has been pitching in pain for awhile. Would like to know how and how long.
Jim...WGN Radio said it happened Sunday
when he tripped on a step on the dugout.
...he thought he just had a stubbed toe...
Yeh.
I just read around and reconsidered.
This is more than 2 weeks off. I have broke my toe before. It sucks because there is little to do for it..
But for what its worth, we have a GREAT rotation. Hart and whoever else will get the job done.
I hope this doesn't make Hendry think we need Pedro or something...
We still need a bat. Badly.
Matt....'ole Jimbo thinks we have what it takes:

In the words of Billy Madison's friends in his stint in high school, "he must be in loser denial or something"
He knows that he sucks. He knows he made HORRIBLE moves.....think about it. Every single damn move he made in the offseason came back to bite him in the ass:
-trading for Gregg
-trading DeRosa
-signing Miles
-signing Gathright
-signing Bradley
-trading Marquis for Vizcaino
-DFA'ing Vizcaino and eating salary
-DFA'ing Gaudin and eating salary
-having to trade Gathright for Freel, then trading Freel and eating salary
-signing Bako, and eating the buyout (about $200k)
I mean, every possible move he made was an epic failure this offseason. It wasn't even close.
He'll stand pat, because it's the only way he saves his job (hoping Bradley and Gregg can save his offseason filled with mistakes)...and it's hinged on what? Past success? Sorry, neither one has had much success in the past. Both are league average...if that for their respective positions.
We need a bat, and the best that Hendry has done for us was Ryan Freel---subsequently released...and now Jeff Baker---who won't see the light of day on the field, and might be a younger less fast version of Freel.
It's time for us old-timers to recall the story of Dizzy Dean. He suffered a broken big toe in a game, came back before it had healed, and altered his delivery to compensate for the pain. That resulted in an arm injury, and he was never the same again. Overall good health has been missing this year.
He broke his toe celebrating...........
From the Tribune site:
Just when things were getting back to normal, the Cubs just announced tonight's starter, Ryan Dempster, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken big right toe.
Dempster said he caught his foot on the dugout railing while jumping out of the dugout running onto the field after Sunday's win over the Brewers. He expects to miss his final two starts before the All-Star break and perhaps one more after the break. But manager Lou Piniella says he could miss three to four weeks, at least.
"It's a weird thing," Dempster said.
He said it's a non-displaced fracture and he would likely lose his toe nail.
Carlos Zambrano will start tonight in on three days rest in Dempster's place.
Kevin Hart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa, and will start tomorrow's finale against the Braves.
That story disgusts me.
This team is in serious need of a bat..
Getting that bat is more likely to save his job, I'd imagine -- especially if he gets really creative about it..
He broke it celebrating Sunday night's win. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2009/07/dempster-to-disabled-list-with-broken-toe.html
It's embarrassing and weird... but things like this happen. And it will be 3-4 weeks. All of your weight goes on that toe and broken bones take a while to heal. This is tough blow.
Check my proposal for trading Harden...with Demp out...we need him to perform....It still comes down to the next 6 games to see where we're at.
Sunday's doubleheader looms large...Depending on how the pitching holds tonight and tomorrow...we might have to call up Ascanio...AND SOMEONE
would have to go down???...Soriano
anyone?
Broken big toe? IT wrecked Dizzy Dean's career. He changed his mechanics and he was never effective again. And Jim Lonborg, BoSox star--same story.
Dumpster was walking too many this year to be as effective as last year. Still he had 11 quality starts out of 17--that's more than Mr. Zambrano, but less than Lilly and Marquis. By the way Marquis leads the league with 11 wins.
Now the baton is passed to Hart for the next start. I don't want Marshall starting vs. the Card. Albert Pujols would tear him apart.
Okay...give up the whole Marquis thing. It was a very bad signing to begin with 3 years ago, but it was also a bad trade...but NOT because we SHOULDN'T have traded him...it's because Hendry could have, and should have gotten more for an effective 5th starter than Luis freaking Vizcaino. but whatever...like the Bradley situation that I need to let go of (though it's so difficult watching that moron play)...people have to let go of the Marquis situation. In fact, if you were one that thought we should have gotten rid of him in the first place (highly likely in Cubs Nation), then you cannot say anything at all.
Marquis credits Bob Apadaca (Rockies pitching coach) with his turnaround:

hindsight's always 20-20 in these type of trades...I'm sure Dodgers fans say that about the Karros and Grudz trade for Hundley---they couldn't wait to get rid of those two...then watched them tear it up for us in 2003, and Hundley, I believe was out of baseball the year following. But fact is, 2 of the greatest pitching coaches to ever live (Duncan and Mazzone) couldn't fix him...so you have to take that into consideration. Maybe at 31 years old, he finally grew up, and learned to trust his coaches....who knows? But I know, I for one, couldn't wait to see him gone...I was just flabbergasted that we could only get Luis Vizcaino in return. Given the dearth of decent starting pitching out there, I thought Hendry could've at least asked for a few decent minor leaguers in return. It was yet more proof that when forced to make a deal, Hendry cannot get fair value in return.
