According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs traded Joey Gathright to the Orioles for utility man Ryan Freel.

Reports surfaced following Thursday night's game against the Astros that Joey Gathright would be sent to the minors once he cleared waivers to make room for Randy Wells. The Cubs have not made a roster move for Friday and the addition of Ryan Freel will likely send Bobby Scales back to Iowa.

Updated - 4:06pm C.T. - Joey Gathright was outrighted to the minors before the trade which created room on the active roster for Randy Wells.

Ryan Freel will report to the Cubs on Saturday according to the Sun-Times and be activated then. The Cubs will have to make abother roster move before Saturday night's game.

The Cubs will pay the remainder of Joey Gathright's $800,000 contract for this season while the Orioles will pay what is still owed of Ryan Freel's $3.3 million for this season. Ken Rosenthal called the deal "cash-neutral" according to his source.

Freel will give the Cubs a utility player that can play all three outfield spots as well as second and third. Freel had a history of injuries in his days with the Reds and is coming off a rehab assignment with the Oriolies.

Remember when everyone was upset that Pie was traded and the Cubs gave up on him way too early........

Here's what I don't understand about getting Gathright in the first place..

    .....don't they have scouts ???????

Why don't they see what we all knew in the winter time when we were scratching our heads as to why we picked up this bum ?? I will never get it. Same thing with guys like Jacque Jones, Burnitz, etc...Are there scouts blind ?

and well, of course, it only took 1 month and about 10 AB's for Lou to finally say, "get'em outta here" !!!

    UGH.

  • ripsnorter

Hendry gave up nothing, and he received pretty close to nothing.

  • Ryan R

No actually he gave up no more money, and instead got a guy that can play the game mentally, and doesn't do stupid stuff like getting picked off first every other night.

Trying to figure out if anybody has been traded earlier in the season during their first year here?

  • Ryan R

Gathright is the one signing I just could never figure out. Say what you will about JH, but at least his deals made a little sense. Gathright though, I never understood, as Reed Johnson had far more upside as a sub, with only a little loss of speed.

Freel was a real hustle guy in Cincy, and all I ever heard won sports talk radio here was "Why can't Dunn and Griffey hustle like Freel?" Skills wise he seemed pretty good while he was here, but more than that your going to get 110% every night. I think 1 of his concussions was going after a ball full speed straight into the outfield wall.

  • SuzyS

BTW...little birdy says the Tribe might

    sign Vizcaino.

  • Jim

Well now that we have Freel can we get rid of Miles??? Please

  • SuzyS

Oh come on...didn't you know the Freel

trade is a precurser to a Miles for Carpenter trade straight up? The Cards

really miss Miles and will do anything to get him back. LOL

  • rswartz

This has to mean scales is going back to the minors.

Who is coming up? Please let it be Fox!!!

  • Matt Haggard

    Unless you mean afterwards.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Fox come up when Lee goes on the DL.

Because that's almost a must now.

  • Matt Haggard

    Wells.

  • Jim

How can Freel be traded when he is on the DL????

  • SuzyS

Gathright did nothing, was nothing but an

unproductive roster spot...I don't know that Freel will be any different...with his history of concussions...but if he adds anything...it will be a plus....

Why oh why did we trade DeRo for zip?

  • MikeT

I like this trade, the upside of this deal far exceeds the downside, I mean it's not like Gathright was doing much for us anyway besides coming in to play CF in the 9th and we all saw how that went last night. But the best part of the deal is that the O's are paying his 3.3 million instead of us.

  • Jim C (Tinley Park)

The Joey Gathright era is over. Let's see

    He was:

    * Turbo fast.

    * Average defense at best.

    * Lousy stick.

Welcome to the Chicago Ryan Freel.

  • Matt Haggard

Also. Keep in mind about the injuries that his latest ailment is a ball thrown to his head in a pickoff attempt.

  • Matt Haggard

    Me gusto.

    He's close to done?

He hit .298 last season in about 100+ ABs. His stats look bad this season in a very small 9 games.

Let him come back from his injury and he'll prove this to be a good trade. I like this.

  • Boseph Heyden

Meh...Freel's pretty close to being done and all, but he's better than Gathright, that's for sure. I give the trade a C.
