Here is your end of the week update from the Cubs’ Minor League System. Josh Vitters is really heating up. Vitters hit two home runs over the weekend. Robinson Chirino’s strong start has been stopped by a broken wrist . The Smokies remain tied for first place and they are the only Cubs’ Minor League team to have at least a share of the top spot.
Carlos Zambrano made his rehab start for the Daytona Cubs on Sunday. Zambrano struggled through the first inning. He walked the first two batters he faced before settling down. The D-Cubs defense had two chances for inning ending double plays, but could not turn them and Zambrano ended up allowing two runs in the first inning.
Zambrano retired eight in a row before a giving up two more runs in the third with two outs. Zambrano said he felt fine after the outing and is expected to start on Friday in San Diego. Zambrano’s final line…four runs on five hits with a strikeout and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. Big Z threw 67 pitches, 42 for strikes.
