Schilling Interested...Are the Cubs?

Vote 0 Votes

According to a report in the Orlando Sentinel, Curt Schilling wants to pitch for the Cubs...or the Tampa Bay Rays this season. Schilling has not decided if he will play or not this year after missing the entire 2008 season.

Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald asked the Cubs about a possible interest and he was told they have not spoken to Schilling but would be open to the idea.

The Cubs have enough pitching on paper to win their third straight division title, but as the old cliche goes there is no such thing in baseball as enough pitching. Would Curt Schilling, if healthy, be a fit for the Chicago Cubs?

Schilling is not "looking to be on an opening day roster" and has yet to decide whether he will make a comeback after shoulder surgery last June. Schilling said his shoulder is feeling fine and he will make a decision on his future in the next few weeks.

According to the Tribune on Saturday night, Jim Hendry did not shoot down the idea.

Stay Tuned....

Not sure if any of you read it, but I 'dreamed' of a scenario where the Cubs sign Schilling and shelve him until September. I posted this 'dream' about two weeks ago.

Schilling can take his high 80's high fastball somewhere else. That stuff will get annihilated at Wrigley...

I think it would be a great idea to bring one of the greatest playoff pitchers into chicago. Given our poor track record in the playoffs recently, this is the kind of player that might push us through a few games.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I agree....and what a story it would be for him if he was able to be a member of the Red Sox team that won to break the curese AND the Cubs team that won to break the Curse.... IF that happened....waive the 5 year rule for the man and put him in the Hall right after!

Joe, what are your thoughts on Sandy Alderson?

If you are wondering why. He was linked to the Cubs today by the Tribune. Will have more on the site shortly...

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Well...he certainly has success in Oakland....but San Diego hated him. When it was announced Moores was selling the team...people were disappointed to see Moores leave...but excited because it was likely the end to Alderson.

I'm not a huge fan of his.....he's definitely not a guy for a big market ball club.

For what it's worth.....if they are thinking of replacing Hendry....I'd go with a new name..... Steve Stone!!

Think of the leadership of 2011....

    GENERAL MANAGER = Steve Stone

    MANAGER = Ryne Sandberg

    PITCHING COACH = Greg Maddux

    Now that would be great!!

Schilling did say that money would not be an issue--and that a chance to end the Cub's Series drought would be. I do usually put my wallet in a safe place when I hear, "It's not about the money." The real question would be, "Does he have enough left to be effective?"

A couple of days ago, Aaron, Matt and I talked a little about selecting a 25 man roster of deserving minor leaguers who haven't had enough opportunity in the bigs to make their case. I called the whimsical team the Ponce Snow Snakes--honoring Agustin and that most deadly of asps--the snow snake. The little-finger-sized, foot long creatures neither kill with poison nor by suffocation. They crawl up the butts of victims and freeze them to death.

Seeking to make some sense out of a crazy idea, I sought to build on Aaron' and my original selections. Likely deserving even less attention than given, I have posted a report on the Community Blog--Views section. Some of the names and achievements are quite interesting. Services for the idea will be announced at a later date.

Of course he would be great just for his experience. However I must say I don't like this new trend of these old guys desiding that they will not play until after the season starts so they can get good and rested, see who the good teams are and then milk that team for everything they can. I just don't think it is fair. I say if you are not on someone’s roster, either big league or minor's, then you don't play that year.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I don't see a problem with a guy near the end of his career doing that. Why not? It's not like they come on in September to pitch. They essentially skip spring training and April then go get ready in May and end up pitching by the end of May. Why is that an issue? Otherwise a veteran like that wouldnt have any gas left come September and October when you need him most.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Absolutely I would bring in Schilling.....what a presence to have in the post season. In a 5 game series it would give us plenty of people to choose from. Who had the hot hand. In a 7 game series we would be stacked assuming everyone was healthy.

Schilling would be just as good of an addition as Peavy would have been....and much cheaper and just for a few months!
