Corey Koskie Retires

Vote 0 Votes

According to reports from Carrie Muskat and the Chicago Sun-Times, Corey Koskie announced his retirement from baseball on Saturday morning. Koskie cited issues from the concussion he suffered in July of 2006 as the reason for his decision.

Corey Koskie called his situation a "personal jail".

From Cubs.com:

"You get caught up in what if I came back -- it'd be a great story," he said. "The big story is I had the opportunity to play. But is it really worth it to play?"
"Look at the facts -- I'm 35," he said. "I still can play. But if I play, I want to be 100 percent. I don't want the 'what if I dive, what if I do this.' Really, what am I trying to do to squeeze out two more years?"

Well, he came in, he played, and he left because of health issues. Nothing wrong with that. Still, I get this "Marquis Grissom" vibe from all of this, when he came in at the beginning of 2006, performed, and then decided to retire rather than play for the 06 Cubs. Granted Koskie had other reasons for leaving, but still, I just have this vibe from all of this.

He gave it a shot and it didn't work out. As much as it pains me to say it "there are far greater things in life than baseball" and one's health is far more important. Koskie got to live a life many of us baseball/Cub fans wish we could live even if it was cut short by health concerns. I wish him well.
