Gregg Named Closer

According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, Kevin Gregg was named the Cubs' closer on Sunday.

Carlos Marmol will remain in his important role as one of the best setup men in the league.

Will update if more information is made available...

Think this was the smart move. Still think that the most effective use of Marmol is as a stopper, 8th inning guy.

I am more worried about who will pitch in the seventh inning to give these guys the ball, Neil what do you think.

  • Neil

I think the 7th will be Heilman. I am concerned about the pen. I really like Patton, maybe they could come up with a mystery injury for both Gaudin and Guzman.

This was the right move. Marmol is our best bullpen pitcher and is absolutely crucial to come in to the game with the bases loaded, no outs, and "save" the game regardless of the inning.

Anyone who follows the Cubs knows that Marmol has the most value, and Pinella is simply using him so the team maximizes that value.

Another poor managerial decision. Piniella should have named Marmol the closer. That way, if Marmol faltered, the Cubs would have a proven closer waiting in the wings. Now, if Gregg falters, the Cubs don't know what they'll get from Marmol.

Right-handed pitchers Kevin Hart and Randy Wells were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Catcher Mark Johnson, infielders Andres Blanco and Esteban German and outfielders Brad Snyder and So Taguchi were assigned to the Minor League camp.

    Well..

    So much for Taguchi.

    Gogglehead deserves it.

    Good move Uncle Lou.
