Sean Marshall (3-0, 1.93/1.03) vs. Nick Adenhart (2-0, 3.26/1.09)

Countdown to Opening Day...6 days. The last day of March and the next to the last game at HoHoKam Park for the Cubs in the 2009 Cactus League schedule. Sean Marshall will make his final spring start today. Depending on how the Cubs handle Rich Harden, if they skip Marshall the first time through the rotation, today could be his last start until at least the Cardinals series at Wrigley (April 16-April 19).

David Patton is also expected to pitch today.

Sean Marshall was not pleased with his last outing against the Giants. Marshall had trouble standing on the mound due to the strong winds in Scottsdale last Thursday but did not use it as an excuse for his poor start.

Marshall walked five batters in four innings of work and ended up allowing two runs on four hits with the five walks and two strikeouts.

This spring, Marshall has allowed six runs, five earned, in seven games, six starts. In 23 1/3 innings he has issued only six walks while striking out 13...of the 18 hits allowed, only one has been a home run.

The Cubs offense will face one of the Angels' young guns today. Nick Adenhart was ranked as the second best prospect in their system prior to last season...and this year Baseball America thinks Nick Adenhart is the top prospect in their organization.

Last year for the Angels, Adenhart posted a 1-0 record in three starts, with a 9.00 ERA.

This spring Adenhart has not disappointed. In five games, four starts, he has allowed 10 runs, seven earned, on 17 hits with four walks and 13 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

Sheffield is a head case. Add him in the mix with Bradley and Big Z, and you could have murder and mayhem in the clubhouse. He hit .178 this Spring, and last year he was a huge bust with a most awful attitude. No wonder Detroit cut him. IMHO, we don't need him.

We need offense alright. But can Hendry see it?

  • rswartz

Anybody think the cubs will have any desire/chance to pick up Sheffield, and put him in Gathrights roster spot?

I know he cant play third, but he does have the right hander power we need?

Any projections on what he signs for and with whom?

  • waldo7239117

Hoff can hit but can not feel, I will still take Lee over him because he bats 290 and a really good fielder.

  • MikeS

Yeah so what then, we just let this kid who is a great hitter sit the bench cause we have a good fielder at first. Micah isnt that bad at first, too bad he doesnt play his actual position more often. Lee needs to be talked to about accepting a trade so Micah can get the playing time that he should get.

  • Neil

Mike...for the record, I am clicking my heels. Great shot of Santo!

  • Neil

Hoffpauir just hit #6 of the spring off of Scott Shields,a 2-run homer

  • MikeS

This kid needs to play every day, all he does is hit.

  • Neil

Kosuke with a triple and a double for Lee...at least they are starting to swing the bat

  • Austinbp

    Hey neil,

Have u or will u ever create a mobile version of the CCO? I'm normally reading this on my iphone, and it takes quite a long time 4 the regular site to load...thanks

  • Neil

Austin, that is one of the things I have been working on. Hopefully soon.

  • waldo7239117

I dont know who but I saw it at this link:

    http://cubsrumorsandnews.blogspot.com/

  • Neil

Patton allowed two inherited runners to score, back-to-back singles

  • MikeS

Patton , sweet, cut Vizcaino we have to make sure this kid sticks with us. With the trend of cutting guys and eating salary Vizcaino would be able to be cut cheap compared to what other clubs are eating.

  • waldo7239117

I hear that jim Hendry is talking to the Angels of a trade.

  • MikeS

what have u heard? a trade involving whom?

  • GaryLeeT

I think I heard the annoucers say that the Angles are averaging 11 runs a game over their last 8. Right now, the Cubs are clearly not in their class.

  • Neil

Marshall knocked out with 1 out in the fourth. 6-0 Angels.

  • GaryLeeT

The game does not matter and it shows. But they'll flip on the switch once the season starts. Right?

  • Neil

    Right?!?!?

    Patton is in

  • Neil

Marshall just walked the pitcher to load the bases in the 4th with no outs. Angels scored a pair, including a home run by Hunter.

    3-0 Angels

  • Dorasaga

Yeah, he's not taking command. He was missing his spot every pitch as we speak, hanging, or if not, throwing way off... And against an Angels lineup notorious for their impatience? Not good at all. Something's wrong. I want to hear after the game what happened.

  • Neil

The Angels have 'turned over a new leaf' this spring. Take a look at their walk totals.

    Not defending..just saying

  • Dorasaga

Yeap, I checked. The Halos is ahead of us in spring walks. Though, I'll cross my fingers as the real season starts. Other than Abreu, I'm not seeing any difference of their core players.

  • Dorasaga

I think Theriot was going to steal. He tweaked to his right, towards second, but found out the battery sorted him out, and was too late to come back. The Angels pitcher was quick. He caught Fuk as well (though that was halfly Fuk's fault).

  • Neil

Theriot was just picked off first...what is going on?

  • GaryLeeT

Soto looks like he's about 2 weeks behind the rest of the team.

  • Dorasaga

Is it just me? or there's a view that our Marshall-Soto combo day would be some of Baker's best stealing day?

Marshall's slow curve plus Soto's slow position to fire do not look promising... I hope they solve this in the next 6 days...

  • ripsnorter

    Tigers just cut Gary Sheffield.

  • Dorasaga

Marshall just K-ed Itzuris with a breaking ball (I think). But Sean's not satisfied. Maybe he has concern of his control. Maybe he thinks this is not his day...

  • Neil

Can you explain, "but Sean's not satisfied"?

    Thanks man

  • Dorasaga

Oh, it's his look. He's playing the ball, looking at it and looking confused... Maybe I'm being a worrybug... maybe, just maybe...

  • Dorasaga

And maybe that's his usual gesture as he sorts things out. And if he'll do that for another 5 innings, no runs allowed, cool.

  • Dorasaga

Wow, Fuk just made a joke of himself... slipped ON THE BAG so gave Angels 1B Morales a cheap tag and out...

And he's batting "like" Ichiro now, throwing his bat for a hit. Is that what we want out of the one behind Soriano?

    I don't know... I really dunno...

  • Neil

Angels, 1-0 in the first, wild pitch and a walk...no hits

  • MikeS

i like micah hitting before aram. But take lee out of there and move them up with bradley hitting 5th. Now thats what I would like to see.

  • Neil

    Today's lineup:

    Soriano - LF

    Fukudome - CF

    Lee - 1B

    Hoffpauir - RF

    Ramirez - 3B

    Fontenot - 2B

    Soto - C

    Theriot - SS

    Marshall - P
