Here’s info on the pitching match-ups and the latest news from Mesa on Aaron Miles, Corey Koskie, Mike Fontenot, Jose Ascanio and Carlos Zambrano pitching in the WBC? News from Mesa
According to a report in the Tribune, Aaron Miles is not expected to play for the next few days due to a sore shoulder. By all accounts Miles is fine he is adjusting to the different throws from playing shortstop, second base and third base.
The Tribune also reported Corey Koskie is in camp but might not play for a couple of days. Koskie is recovering from post-concussion syndrome and has not received medical clearance to play yet. Dave Van Dyck mentioned a decision on Koskie could come on Saturday…but he did not elaborate on what decision needed to be made.
Rumors began surfacing on Thursday that Carlos Zambrano might pitch for Team Venezuela in the second round of the WBC. Zambrano denied those rumors according to the Tribune and will not pitch in the second round of the Classic.
According to Bruce Levine, Jose Ascanio’s stock is rising while Chad Gaudin’s is falling.
According to a report from Bruce Miles, Mike Fontenot has all but locked up the starting second baseman’s job…
Cubs versus Angels
Sean Marshall has all but locked up the fifth spot in the Cubs rotation (Piniella is expected to name his fifth starter and back-up catcher in the next week), but no one has told Aaron Heilman.
Heilman will make his third start and fourth appearance in Cactus League action today. Heilman has been more than impressive and another great outing could delay Piniella announcing his decision.
Heilman has allowed one run on four hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts in 8 innings. Heilman is pitching with a lot of confidence and poise right now. He stated right after being traded to the Cubs he wanted to return to the starting rotation and it will be interesting to see how he will perform if he is one of Lou Piniella’s set-up men when the season starts.
Angel Guzman, Randy Wells, Neal Cotts, Mike Stanton and Kevin Gregg are also expected to see action today.
Joe Saunders will make his second spring start and appearance today. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and no strikeouts in his first three-inning outing.
