Lou Piniella’s crew will play their last split squad games of the spring today. Half of the team will stay in Mesa and host the Mariners…while the rest of the team will make the short trip to the beautiful Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Carlos Marmol rejoined his team on Thursday and he should receive action in the next couple of days. The Cubs will be on WGN TV and radio on Saturday when they host the Angels, so Lou Piniella may give him another day to settle back into camp.
Corey Koskie reported to camp on Thursday and took his physical. Koskie should make his Cubs’ debut in one of today’s games.
Cubs versus Mariners
Sean Marshall will make his fourth start of the spring today against the Mariners. Marshall has pitched extremely well so far and is the leader to begin the season as the Cubs’ fifth starter.
Marshall has allowed one run on six hits in nine innings with five strikeouts and most importantly….no walks.
The Cubs will face Gaby Hernandez who will be making his fourth appearance of the spring and third start. He has allowed four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Mariners are expected to use Mark Lowe, Tyler Walker, Shawn Kelly and former Cub David Aardsma today.
The rest of the Mariners roster will be in Tucson battling the Diamondbacks.
Cubs versus Angels
Chad Gaudin will take the mound in Tempe today for his third start of the spring. Gaudin showed a lot of improvement in his last start and in his first three outings this spring he has allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings. Gaudin has walked only one batter and struck out five but has served up two home runs.
The Angels are expected to send Dustin Moseley to the mound for his third start of the spring. Moseley is battling for the fifth spot in the Angels’ rotation and has pitched rather well so far. Moseley has allowed two runs on five hits in five innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
Darren Oliver, Jose Arredondo, Sean O’Sullivan, Jason Bulger and Kevin Jepsen are also expected to pitch today for Mike Scioscia.
