Jeff Samardzija (0-0, 9.00/2.50) vs. John Danks (1-0, 0.00/0.50)
For the fifth spring in a row the Cubs will play a pair of games in Las Vegas at Cashman Field. The annual event is typically called ‘Big League Weekend‘ and is scheduled on the Friday and Saturday before Opening Day. But with Lou Piniella’s crew participating in the opening of new Yankee Stadium this year, they moved the weekend to the next two days.
Jeff Samardzija is scheduled to face John Danks in the first game…with Aaron Heilman and Jeff Marquez penciled in for game two, a rematch of the game on February 28 at HoHoKam.
The Cubs would like to see Jeff Samardzija pitch three innings tonight in his second outing after tossing two in the Cactus League opener. Samardzija was very good in his first inning of work back on February 25. Spring Training or not, Ozzie Guillen should be out to prove a point tonight…especially with the game being televised in Chicago. The Cubs beat the Sox 13-0 in their first of five spring match-ups last Saturday.
The White Sox did not play on Tuesday and the other half of their squad faced the A’s earlier today in Phoenix.
John Danks was very good in his first appearance of the spring. He gave up just one hit without a walk and struck out a pair.
Bobby Jenks, Scott Linebrink and John Van Benschoten are scheduled to throw at some point in the next two games. Chris Getz, Jermaine Dye, DeWayne Wise, Josh Fields, A.J. Pierzynski, Jerry Owens and Paul Konerko are among the Sox regulars that made the trip.
Jeff Samardzija needs to improve on his last outing if he still wants to remain in the mix for the fifth spot in the rotation. Sean Marshall showed improvement in his second start of the spring and came in as the front-runner.
Samardzija was very good in his first inning of work but loaded the bases twice in his second inning. If not for a 1-2-3 double play he would have allowed more than the two runs he did (two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in two innings).
Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot, Koyie Hill, Aramis Ramirez, Reed Johnson and Alfonso Soriano are expected in the lineup against the White Sox.
