Cubs Scouting Bobby Crosby?

According to a report in the Tribune, the Cubs are scouting Bobby Crosby. With the A's recent signing of Orlando Cabrera and reportedly agreeing to terms with Nomar Garciaparra, Crosby "is suddenly expendable."

Crosby is scheduled to earn $5.2 million this season, which is well above his market value as the Tribune pointed out.

Jim Hendry reportedly is looking for a back-up utility infielder that is right -handed and Cosby would fill the role...plus Hendry and Billy Beane have a history of working out deals.

Crosby's career line: .239/.306/.380/.686 with 126 doubles and 55 home runs in 580 games. Crosby has not played another position other than shortstop in his big league career.

Bobby Crosby told reporters in the Bay area that he is unhappy with the signing and still wants to be an everyday player according to a report on XM Radio.

Definitely a big NO on Crosby. I agree with MRDRO. Reardless of how the season turns out, the DeRo trade is a mistake unless we pick up somebody on the caliber of Peavy. DeRo just does not cost that much on a rich team like the Cubs. Those minor league pitchers have to flipped for that trade to make any real sense. Let's see how the ownership deal pans out.

He really doesn't add anything we need. Dealing for Crosby only makes sense if Cubs are swapping Vizcaino's salary and they were re-visiting some sort of Peavy deal (that included one of our infielders).

Totally agree that the D-ro trade is still a head scratcher at this point. Waiting for something to break (Lou didn't like him, a trade that includes Stevens, etc.) that answers why we shipped him out for spare parts.

Neil's topic re scouting Crosby ended with a ?. There's no way Crosby gets consideration by the Cubs. P. Sullivan of the Trib needed two more lines to fill his quota at the end of his report and realized that scouts look at everybody when on assignment. He mentioned Crosby's name because it's a name that in the news.

There's a better chance the Cubs do somethng with Jose Bautista the Jays unimpressive backup infielder who had 3 HR's in his 56 AB's last year while mostly playing 3rd. He also played 1st and 2nd. The amazing thing is that he played 1st and 2nd at the same time. The guy is really fast. LOL

I really don't want to see us go after Crosby.

Cory Koskie had a pretty good debut yesterday for team Canada, he drew a walk, doubled, was hit by a pitch, and scored 3 runs.

I don't see Crosby coming to the Cubs. Not versatile enough, and financially just not a fit. As Sean pointed out....Why did we let DeRosa go if we were gonna spend the same money on a lesser player. I certainly don't see the money prudent A's eating most of his contract. Even if they did...as I said he just doesnt fit with the team.

There have been discussions about former Padres President Sandy Alderson joining the Cubs under new ownership. Luckily in todays San Diego Union Tribune, it was noted that Alderson is a top candidate for the Commissioner of Pac-10 sports. Best wishes to him on that so he doesnt end up in Chicago!

I don't know how the Cubs could justify bringing in Crosby at that price tag. I suppose it would depend on if the A's would eat any part of his contract or if the Cubs would be forced to pay him the $5.2 million. If the latter were the case, it would not really make sense. Mark DeRosa, one of the Cubs' most valuable players last season, is going to make about the same as Crosby this year. To bring in Crosby, who is nowhere near the ballplayer DeRosa is, would seem rather counterproductive.
