The Shark Struggles…Sox Even the Score – Cubs 6 White Sox 7

Game Nine – Cubs (ss) 6 White Sox (ss) 7
WP – Aaron Poreda (1-0) LP – David Patton (0-1) Save – None

A combined 13 runs on 27 hits with three home runs….just another night in Las Vegas. The Cubs lost their second game of the day in the bottom of the 9th after a 1-out infield single by former Cub farmhand Josh Kroeger, a wild pitch and a single to center by Ben Broussard off of David Patton.

The Cubs took the lead in the top of the eighth on a RBI single by Darwin Barney that plated Richie Robnett. But Angel Guzman served up a belt high breaking ball to another former Cub, Michael Restovich that landed well beyond the left field wall.

Jeff Samardzija struggled again after a solid first inning of work. Samardzija allowed three runs on five hits in three innings with two strikeouts…and he hit both Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko.

Cubs’ pitching did not walk a single batter on Wednesday night…but allowed three home runs that accounted for four of the Sox runs.

Ryan Theriot had a huge night at the plate, 3-for-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored. A day after hitting his first long ball of the spring, Aramis Ramirez hit his first double and finished the night 2-for-3.

At times Jeff Samardzija showed a glimpse of what is to come for the right-hander. Samardzija mixed his pitches well but was inconsistent. Samardzija threw 12 pitches in the first, nine for strikes…26 in the second, 16 for strikes and eight in the third, six for strikes.

Like his first start against the Dodgers, Samardzija pitched around a couple of mistakes in the first inning (a double by A.J. Pierzynski and hitting Paul Konerko) and did not allow a run.

In the second inning Tyler Flowers reached on an infield hit down the third base line. Jayson Nix advanced Flowers to third on a bloop single to left and he scored on a single to center by Jerry Owens.

Wilson Betemit hit a two-run shot to left in the third a batter after Samardzija hit his second batter of the game, Jermaine Dye.

The Cubs offense hit John Danks hard in the first inning. Alfonso Soriano just missed a home run to right (0-for-3). Danks settled down and did not allow a run in his three innings of work.

The Cubs finally broke through in the fourth on 2-out single by So Taguchi. Micah Hoffpauir reached on a 2-out single to right and Mike Fontenot followed with a single past Wilson at short. Koyie Hill walked to the bases…and Taguchi delivered the clutch hit.

Jake Fox drove in the Cubs third run in the fifth. Ryan Theriot singled to center to start the inning and advanced to third on a double to right by Aramis Ramirez.

Doug Deeds hit a sacrifice fly in the 6th that plated Mike Fontenot after ‘Little Babe Ruth‘ led off the inning with a triple. Ryan Theriot then doubled in Richie Robnett to tie the game at five….Robnett was 1-for-1 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
