Rambling from ... Eight More Days

Vote 0 Votes

As the city of Pittsburgh slows down after the "joy of six" and the rest of the sports world slips into the most boring six weeks of the calendar, unless of course you love golf or watching cars turn left for three hours, the thought of pitchers and catchers reporting excites the bejesus out of me. I have a lot of thoughts and it's time to share them in my wonderfully hypnotic stream of consciousness.

  • I think Fukudome will have the opposite of the sophomore slump.
  • Mark DeRosa's absence will be evident immediately.
  • Ryan Dempster will then just tell more jokes and put more icy-hot in Ted Lilly's boxer-briefs.
  • Speaking of ... goodbye Mrs. DeRosa, but hello Mrs. Lilly
  • I cannot believe Adam Dunn is still a free agent, I just can't.
  • I am nervous that Soto will miss Blanco. I am not predicting anything, just a bit nervous. It seemed as if they had a very good relationship.
  • Is it wrong that I am overly entertained by the new "90210?"
  • I mean, seriously, Rob Estes from the USA smash-hit "Silk Stalkings" and Aunt Becky from "Full House." That combination is unbeatable.
  • Sorry.
  • 2009 Cubs MVP - Aramis Ramirez. I know, I really going out on the proverbial limb on that one. Please share your thoughts on the Cubs MVP below.
  • I went to college with Aaron Heilman. He thinks my name is Kevin. I just went with it.
  • I know, I know ... you are all very happy for me.
  • Still scratching my head on that one. It is rather easy to speculate and criticize from an arm-chair, but can't figure that one out. I guess the Weurtz trade made it make a little more sense ... but not much.
  • Already changed my mind regarding the '09 version of Fukudome. That took about two minutes.
  • If you haven't heard Aaron Miles harrowing evening at a motel while in the minors, Google it. I am sure most, if not all of you have, but if not, check it out.
  • I am taking May 2nd as in the "first time Harden goes on the DL."
  • Samardzija, Marshall or Heilman? Who do you want as the 5th? I am thinking the Shark.
  • But then again, Marshall has done more to earn that role, but I guess that is one of the reasons for spring training..
  • I have been out of town most of the time since mid-September. In fact, I have only been in Chicago for about four weeks since that time so, admittedly, I am a little out of the loop, but where is Angel Guzman? I mean, isn't it about time, bud?
  • I was extremely impressed with Milton Bradley after the Cubs Convention. Maybe, just maybe, it works this time.
  • Love the guy or hate the guy, if Manny gets a multi-year contract worth more than $22.5 per year, Scott Boras must be considered a genius.
  • I don't think he is good for baseball, but he is darn good at his job.
  • I say this from the perspective of the casual Cubs fan, not you guys, but I think Reed Johnson is the most underappreciated player on the team. One huge play every game. I will never forget watching Kerry Wood mouth "holy f---" after the catch in Washington, D.C.
  • Two years removed from the injury and more familiar with his daughter's condition, I think D-Lee is poised for a bounce-back season.
  • Ya know, the more I think about Fukudome ... never mind.

Does anyone know when WGN will put out their Cubs tv schedule? I don't know what this season will bring, how about 2009 will be for the Cubs as 2006 was to the Cards? Maybe not the greatest regular season, but as long as we get in and get hot in October...I agree that Soriano has to have a big year. I'd also like to see someone else lead off if patience at the plate is important as everyone says. Don't care about a fifth starter, we're loaded on pitching, but I like Heilman and will drink more Old Style this year. Can you say Fully Krausened? I don't think anyone in the division got better and the Cards' GM is a cheapskate. If we don't make any more moves before AZ, look to add some pop off the bench later on, and I don't mean Pepsi, baby!! Bring on the season, if it weren't for the Blackhawks I'd be totally bored....

Herman....this is all I have seen. If anyone else has a link, please post.

I have read that the Braves might be willing to loose Glavin for an outfielder. Interesting yea he's old but he has post season experience. He will command about 3 mil for a yr. It might be worth stocking some Vets just incase one of our guys were to get hurt. Maybe a swingman role? He could even give some of our horses a rest with spot starts. Just food for thought.

  • JimK

Well, we missed out on three more free agents with Cubs ties this afternoon. Jacque Jones and Daryl Ward both signed minor leage deals with the Reds, and Cliff Floyd has a deal with the Pads. I'm not sad about that.

  • Jim C (Tinley Park)

    Brian Mc:

I have never seen Lilly's wife.

(My favorite wife is Alejandra Tejada,

    Muy Caliente!!!!!!!)

I know how you felt about Heidi Derosa and I didn't mean to rub it when she hugged me at the cub convention a few years back. Come to think of it, Jason Dubois's girlfriend/wife was pretty fine looking as well.

  • JustWin1

The majority of the wives are hot as hell. They're gold diggers man.

Fellow crazies, It's a slow news day, so rambling it is!

Murton could be a fifth OF for the Rockies, but he has options. He'll likely spend some time at AAA. My man Seth Smith should have a good spring, and he has a good shot at the opening day spot in left field.

The Cubs corner outfielders will hit 70 or more HR's in '09. Soriano, with a .290 BA and 42 HR's and Z with 21 wins will be co-mvp's. Demp will win 18 games. Bradley will lead the team in BA and will play 144 games. Lee will hit .312, cut his GIDP's about in half and lead the league in sacrifice flys. (At spring training, I'll be giving him a tip about his grip that gives him a slight uppercut in his swing.)

Marmol will save 36 regular season games and 3 in the first round of the playoffs. Dome will hit a steady .285 with 35 doubles, 86 walks and 12 HR's--and he will bat 2nd from the middle of May on. Fontenot will slip to about .255, and Miles at .270 will be good enough to become the regular second baseman. Soto will slide a bit to .277 and 20. Harden and ARam will each spend about three weeks on the DL.

Brian will admit someday that, while at Notre Dame, he had a pizza delivery shirt with the name "Kevin from Heaven" on it. That shirt and an empty pizza box consistently got Brian past the sentries in the women't dorms at nearby St. Mary's College for women. In other words, Heilman did not err when he "knew Brian" as Kevin.

  • Gary J

Yes - it is VERY wrong that you are overly entertained by the new "90210"

    You should feel much shame

Anyone hear the Reed Johnson interview this morning on the Score? He said he's been working out everyday in Las Vegas with Aaron Rowand at 4:30 a.m. In Vegas? 4:30? And he's been asleep??? Just proves committed to having a great season in whatever compacity he is used.

Best part was he said he was practicing running into brick walls with ivy while Rowand was using a softer wall. What a gamer!

  • Photo Chris

Good read and I love the Johnson highlight clip. The catch against the Nats was one of my favorite plays from last year. I leave for AZ on 3/6 and I'm out there for 10 days.

  • shawn

Only 8 more days. I cant wait. I think 09 is going to be one hell of a ride. I love picking up Bradley. This team needs a spark plug like him. I do think with all the expierence this team has they will be able to keep him in check. With that said this team will be all about pitching. I look for big Z to have a huge year and Demp and Harden not far behind.

My MVP im going to have to agree with Nick. I think Soriano is finally going to stay healthy and this will be his year. Next Friday cant get here soon enough!!!

  • Lows005

Yea, Fukudome will surely split time with Johnson (who I still say should be the everyday player & leadoff hitter...)

Team MVP will be Soto (Blanco's departure won't sting THAT much)

5th starter will be Heilman (Marshall will be our long lefty out of the bullpen, I don't trust Cotts and Visciano as our only lefties...Shark needs another year out of the bullpen and maybe some AAA time to work on his other pitches)

DeRo will surely be missed, but I'm looking for Mike and Miles to do a good job, not great, but good. Maybe a combined average of .275 with 18 HRs.

My favorite reaction the Johnson's catch is still Derosa's...he just stands there like, "really??...what the f***...?"

My negative prediction...in a strange twist of fate Bradley is playing CF and collides with Soriano, injurying both players. In the same game Harden goes down and is done for the season. The team rallies and still wins 87 games to win the crumby central. Also, we acquire McLouth at the trade deadline. The Cubs will be fine in 2009!

  • nick

    More Great ramblings Brian.

After watching the clip I am really pumped and ready for the season to start!

-I am not sure what Dome's going to do this year. I hope I am pleasantly surprised.

-I am really going to miss DeRosa, but I am really excited to see what Mighty Mike can do this year. I expect big things from him.

-I hope Soto doesn't miss Blanco too much, but in the same sence the last time we had Bako we got pretty dang close to the big dance.

-I am sad to say I have seen one episode of the new 90210, and I am proud to say I haven't seen it since.

-Fifth starter I am going to say -The Shark.

-I am looking forward to seeing Bradley. I think spending a lot of time as DH last year might have really helped him fully recover from everything.

-I think this is the year Soriano puts in a full season with us and shows us all why he got the contract he did.

    -Team MVP, Soriano.

  • GaryLeeT

Fukudome will "survive" in a platoon, but will never be a top or middle of the order guy. 2 out walks from the 8 hole, to get the pitcher's spot out of the way, will be his specialty. .252/.340/29. Team MVP will be Bradley and I agree that Miles and Fontenot will ably fill the void left by DeRosa's departure.

  • agustin rexach

great ramblings Brian. For everybodys sake

Fukudome should bounce back. There is

a lot more pressure on him this year and it

will be tough...but it's time to know if he is

man or mice. I think he will be a bust but I

hope im wrong. Reed is right there waiting.

I was at that game in DC. Dempster was

Pitching and I believe it was him who said

the lovely words! At any rate, it was the greatest

    catch I ever saw.

  • 09shine

as far as fan appreciation goes.. i would say theriot is more underappreciated than johnson.. it seems that everyone loves johnson, while there are a group of theriot-bashers, that for some reason like to hate on the guy.. i feel ashamed to root for the same team as them

as far as your other thoughts

    - marshall will be the 5th

    - kosuke will turn it around like demp

    - fontenot will pick up where derosa left off.. (but he will be greatly missed though)

    - and bradley will be good for the team

  • Matt Haggard

If you're a long time reader Shine, you'd know how much I'd defend the Riot to the end.

Here's the reason Theriot gets as much hate as Reed gets love.

Theriot can't hit the HR. He doesn't slug at all.

Which I can't deny. But what you also can't deny is that every time Theriot gets on base, something happens.

He's also still my vote for leadoff guy. He's a singles hitter. Aint that what you want out of your leadoff guy? To get on base?
