As announced on Saturday afternoon, Jeff Samardzija will start the Cubs' Cactus League opener on Wednesday against the Dodgers at HoHoKam Park. Lou Piniella will hold Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster out of the first week games. Due to the extended exhibition season, the starters will have plenty of time to get their work in.

Carlos Marmol did not make his decision on pitching for the Dominican Republic in the WBC on Saturday...he is expected to make an announcement on Sunday.

Carlos Zambrano

According to a report from the Tribune, Carlos Zambrano threw live batting practice on Saturday to minor leaguers with Larry Rothschild and Mark O'Neal monitoring him. Zambrano did not talk to the media afterwards and "stomped out of the clubhouse shouting 'beat it' in Spanish."

The Cubs said not to read anything into it. No one is worried about Zambrano's shoulder according to the Tribune, "some are worried about his head."

Congratulations, Agustin (and I'm recalling Jennifer). Please forgive me if I blew that name. My TW and I started with two girls, added a son and then just went through the motions. No time frame needed on the report.

Oh man...Harden looks damn sexy with that beard...definite eye candy.

You will have a scout report in no time

and we will add another cousin to camp.

I'm thinking of Agustin this morning, and how we're going to solve the Puerto Rican quota challenge on the Cubs. I mean, if my Indiana can have Samardzija and Heilman playing regularly and Fox knocking on the door, P.R. should have more than Soto. I've even tried sneaking a 4th Hoosier into the mix by trading with the Rockies for the right handed bat of Clint Barmes who plays (2nd, 3rd and SS).

Last winter I thought we had a shot at the Giants lefty, Sanchez, and the Mets lefty reliver, Feliciano. Last spring training, Alex Cintron had possibilities, but he ended up with the Orioles.

Maybe we have to start at the beginning again--with the draft. So Agustin, some of the burden falls on you. Three of your various cousins' cousins are getting draft attention, and you have to get word to JH on whom he should draft. Is Carlos Beltran's cousin, Reymond Fuentes, the wiry OF speedster with surprising power, the best prospect?

What about Ruben Sierra, Jr., the outfielder with power and an amazing arm. He comes with a stat I had never heard of before: His throws from RF have been timed at 92 mph. There is some talk of occasional game day ignorance and apathy--which may be inherited. (When asked to speak to the alleged ignorance and apathy, he reportedly said, "I don't know and I don't care. Is there any of that in your extended family?

Finally, there is Alex Cintron's cousin, Edwin Gomez a SS and OF. I saw a suggestion that he (currently) is a middle to late rounder. Is he better than that? JH needs help, Agustin, and we need you to step up. LOL
