Predictions, Lineups, Hoffpauir and the Cubs TV Schedule

Vote 1 Vote

A day before reporting day for position players, the Cubs are just four players short of a full Spring Training Roster. Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and Derrek Lee are the only regulars who have yet to report to Fitch Park...Luis Vizcaino is the only pitcher that has not reported, he is stuck in the Dominican Republic dealing with visa problems.

Lou Piniella told his team not to make any predictions this year after Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster both said the Cubs would win the big prize the last two springs.

The biggest news from Day 4 of Camp Lou III was Lou Piniella stating he is considering moving Alfonso Soriano down in the lineup...if he does, Mike Fontenot, Aaron Miles, Ryan Theriot or Kosuke Fukudome could be used at the top of the lineup.

The Cubs TV Schedule was released on Monday. Opening Day in Houston will be carried on Comcast SportsNet. The Cubs' Home Opener against the Rockies on April 13th will be on WGN. The Cubs will be on WGN 63 times this season and 80 times on Comcast SportsNet....WCIU, FOX and ESPN will broadcast the remaining 19 games.

Micah Hoffpauir

According to reports from the Tribune and Cubs.com, barring a calamitous spring Micah Hoffpauir "will make the Cubs roster as the fifth outfielder and backup at first base." Piniella said the job is Hoffpauir's to lose.

The Cubs will work Hoffpauir out in left, right and first base this spring.

Cory Provus

Cory Provus will call games at Wrigley Field North starting this season. Provus got the job to be Bob Uecker's sidekick on the Brewers' radio broadcasts.

Lou's Lineup

With nine days before the Cubs' first game of the Cactus League schedule, possible lineups for the Cubs were a big topic of discussion after Lou Piniella mentioned he was thinking about moving Alfonso Soriano out of the top spot.

Dave Kaplan and Paul Sullivan threw out their ideal lineups for the Cubs on Monday night.

Sullivan's Lineup:

  1. Mike Fontenot
  2. Ryan Theriot
  3. Alfonso Soriano
  4. Milton Bradley
  5. Aramis Ramirez
  6. Derrek Lee
  7. Geovany Soto
  8. Kosuke Fukudome/Reed Johnson

Sullivan called Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot a possible 'Daily Double'.

Kaplan's Lineup:

  1. Ryan Theriot
  2. Mike Fontenot
  3. Aramis Ramirez
  4. Milton Bradley
  5. Alfonso Soriano
  6. Derrek Lee
  7. Geovany Soto
  8. Kosuke Fukudome/Reed Johnson

Tidbits from Day 4

  • Mike Fontenot, Aaron Miles and Jake Fox took grounders at third base on Monday.
  • Not too many of the veterans were interested in playing games in Las Vegas this spring. Lou Piniella took a poll and was surprised by the results.
  • Paul Sullivan said on Sports Central that with the way the Cubs' roster is currently constructed Aaron Miles and Mike Fontenot will serve as the backup to Aramis Ramirez.
  • Paul Sullivan thinks Jim Hendry will make another move during Spring Training
  • Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus joined Dave Kaplan on Monday night. He described the Cubs' roster as "balanced, flexible and younger than last year."

Been looking at situational stats from last year, oy! Lots to work with, lots of lineups to tinker with. I like this for now...

    Theriot

    Miles

    Lee

    ARam

    Bradley

    Soriano

    Soto

    Fukudome/Johnson

If Fontenot is playing, I like him down in the lineup rather than up. Here's another

    Fukudome

    Theriot

    Bradley

    ARam

    Soriano

    Lee

    Soto

    Fontenot

    I like this too

    Dernier

    Sandberg

    Matthews

    Durham

    Moreland

    Cey

    Davis

    Bowa

  • Neil

Too many former Phillies for me, that lineup wouldn't win 70 games....I cannot believe it's been 25 years. Great Stuff!

  • jws1935

If Theroit is going to lead off, can someone please teach him how to steal bases. He got caught almost as much as he stole last year.

  • joe d

Great point. The Cubs are missing a legit base-stealing threat. I predict a healthy dose of hit-and-runs. Really, outside of that deficiency, it seems like a nice versatile line-up that could be successful in a variety of configurations. Should be a fun spring for Lou.

  • todd

what is the thought on jake fox? i saw that he was taking grounders at 3rd base. what are the chances he makes the team as a backup in the outfield, 3rd base and emergency catcher? i haven't seen him play much but it sounds like he can really hit.

  • thatcubsfan

    How about:

    Theriot

    Lee

    Bradley

    Ramirez

    Soriano

    Soto

    Little Babe Ruth (aka Fontenot)

    Fukudome/Johnson

I like the idea of having Bradley at number 3 to make good use of his high OBP as well as drive guys in. I also really like Soto in the 6 hole with Fukudome (who I feel is going to have a breakout year)/Johnson in the 8 hole to drive guys in as well and add a little speed to the the bottom of the order.

  • joe d

    Here's my pick (I don't see Bradley as a clean-up hitter)

    THERIOT

    FONTENOT

    BRADLEY (loves the three spot)

    RAMIREZ

    SORIANO

    SOTO

    LEE

    FUKUDOME/JOHNSON

Theriot is going to flourish in the lead-off spot. The 2 and 8 holes are sort of interchangeable.

  • Gregg

    I like Kaplan's although I'd flip-flop MB and Fonz.

    Theriot

    Fontenot

    Ramirez

    Soriano

    Bradley

    Lee

    Soto

    Johnson

I've wanted the riot in the top spot for two years now. Fontenot, being a lefty, is perfect to hit behing Theriot, pulling the ball through the hole created by the 1B holding Theriot on. Lee doesn't seem willing to go oppo with the outside pitches that he gets. When Lee came over from FLA, he was a 6-hole hitter, and now he's back to hitting like a 6-hole hitter again so I have no problem dumping him back there again. Fuk and Miles are good fits batting 2nd too, but only if Fuk can pull it together. Yes, he walked a bunch, but the walks dropped quite a bit when he was struggling to hit the ball.

Side Note: what time do tix go on-sale on Friday? please list time as either CST or EST as I am in the EST.

  • Leeeee

Soriano is a clean-up hitter!! Look at his numbers! He is the most all-or-nothing guy the Cubs have.

    Theriot

    Fontenot

    Bradley

    Soriano

    Ramirez

    Lee

    Soto

    Fukudome

He'll get nothing but fastballs because he's protected by the best hitter on the team in this line-up.

  • Manny

try lee in the number three spot first and if it doesnt work then put bradley into the third spot but keep A RAM in the fourth spot..keep fukudome in number two cuz he'll get on base walk or hit....people fail to relize he did get on base by walks not by hitting...mike would do good in the two spot also...if miles doesnt start and mike does then put riot in the number one spot and put soriano in the 5/6 spot...think bout it if hes hot then people would pitch to A RAM if soriano is in the 5 spot if not then put bradley in the 5 spot....the great thing bout this team is that you could make 162 different lineups and they would ALL be great!!!! i could go on forever!!

    1.Ryan

    2.fukudome

    3.lee

    4.A-ram

    5.bradley

    6.soriano

    7.soto

    8.Fondu

    9.peavy (just joking)

    or

    1.ryan

    2.fukudome

    3.bradley

    4.A-RAM

    5.soriano

    6.lee

    7.soto

    8.fondu

9.PEAVY (joking again) *prays to god*

  • agustin rexach

Fondu? Is that you being you? LOL!

  • Manny

    nope lol

    theriot

    fukudome

    lee

    ramirez

    bradley

    soriano

    soto

    fondu

  • I'm really surprised that both Kaplan and Sullivan put Lee at #6 as opposed to #2.

I'm all for Lee at anywhere but #3, but Theriot and Fontenot at #1 and #2 doesn't sound good to me.

    Maybe:

    Theriot/Fontenot

    Lee

    Soriano

    Bradley

    Ramirez

    Soto

    Johnson/Fuku

    Fontenot/Theriot

work the lefty/righty/hothand as you will

  • Sean

I really like the idea of Theriot and Fontenot in the top two spots. I agree with Kaplan and would rather see Ramirez hit third over Soriano.

  • Logan

I really like Dave Kaplan's lineup. It is very balanced and has so much power in the 3-7 spots.
