From the Wire...Marquis Traded to Colorado

Vote 1 Vote

A week after reaching an agreement with the Rockies, the Cubs completed the trade and officially sent Jason Marquis, along with cash to Colorado for Luis Vizcaino. According to a report on Cubs.com, the Cubs are expected to pay $875,000 of Marquis' $9.875 million contract for 2009.

Luis Vizcaino will make $4 million in 2009 according to Cubs.com while Cot's Contracts has Vizcaino's contract for 2009 valued at $3.5 million with a club option for $4 million in 2010 that includes a $500,000 buyout.

The trade of Jason Marquis opens up the fifth spot in the rotation for either another unknown arm....or Sean Marshall, Angel Guzman, Kevin Hart, Chad Gaudin and long shot Jeff Samardzija according to Cubs.com. The Cubs bullpen will feature Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg at the backend with Neal Cotts and possibly David Patton and Jeff Stevens...Marshall, Guzman, Hart, Gaudin and Samardzija will also figure into the mix once Spring Training begins.

The report on Cubs.com indicated Jim Hendry will continue to look for another starter before pitchers and catchers report to Fitch Park in Mesa on February 14th.

I think it makes sense if the Cubs go after Peavy. Harden become expendable. As much as i like harden. Peavy has averaged over 200 innings pitched every year except last.170IP Harden gets roughly 5 million next year and has averaged roughly 50 innings pitched every year except one. Get Peavy loose Harden we still have a stronger rotation and have some money to play with possibly some prospects in return. We will have a much better rotation for the playoffs.

Peavy will eat innings... just need a shmoe in the 5th spot.

BTW Rich Hill is done. He has been nothing but awful since being demoted.

I don't see Marshall as our fifth starter i think he is good in the bullpen.

well...atleast we didn't get dressed up for nothing!

    Finally some movement...thank you.

Yes bring the new owner and let him splash with aquiring Peavy.

OK so here we go, Vizciano, all the prospects we received from Cleveland, and Cedeno for Peavy? Maybe throw in Pie if they add someone? I think that would get the deal done.

Dont get me wrong Justwin I would love for that trade to happen.....but NEVER in a million years would the Padres (or any other team for that matter) do that.

We cannot expect to be able to trade our rejects and some minor leaguers no one has heard of for a 27 year old Cy Young stud.

Found this article about Cuban and his bid to buy the Cubs. I thought it gave some cool insight into the team buying process.

Rich Hill? After a poor start last season he was sent to AAA Iowa and had had a rough go there too. He was then sent to rookie ball in Mesa, AZ and finally ended up in High A Daytona and wound up on the disabled list. I would love to Hill make a full come back but I don't think it will happen.

As far as Hill goes I think he may be a bit of a long shot. Everything I've heard he is not pitching well in winter ball either.

What do you guys think the chances would be to unload Vizcaino's contract in a trade for a prospect of some sort? Then the end result of the two trades would be getting rid of all of Marquis' contract except 875K and get a prospect in return, it seems like it would be a win-win but I'm not sure how much other teams would want to take on Vizcaino's contract.

Its time to get back to the Peavy chase..what a rotation to take into the season - Zambrano, Peavy, Lilly, Dempster and Harden! That would be unbelievable!

Marquis, was an ok fifth starter. I can understand getting rid of him for a PEAVY type player, but if its marshall we could end up getting screwed. Marshall was are safety net if one of are starters got hurt. Now if some1 gets hurt are bullpen will suffer b/c we taking out either hart, Jeff S (cant spell it), or gaudin. But lets see what happens.

    here's an amazing website:

I hope that Rich Hill gets a shot at the rotation rather than traded. Wipe last year off the slate and start fresh. He did very well in 2007. Would be a nice rotation of Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Hill and Harden.

Marshall has experience in the pen and would be the replacement for any faltering starter.

I don't see Guzman as a starter this year after bouncing back from his surgery. Shark needs another season in the pen before he is ready. He needs to develop another pitch as a starter.

I don't see Hart or Gaudin as starters.

He was also a big reason the races were so close for us the last two years. His main use should've been in the postseason, where he could've played the Jeff Weaver role as a pitcher who had a bad year but came through in the clutch: Marquis seemed like he could've done that, but Pinella had to go with Dempster (logically), Zambrano (mandatory), and Harden (mind boggling, in the essence that they seemed to underpitch him during the season so he could stay healthy, but then they went conservative with him in the postseason, probably saving him for that Game 4 situation like they did with Zambrano previously).

And Vizcaino? Nothing good will come of him playing for us: here's hoping he's a trading chip.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

As far as 5th starters goes, Marquis wasn't bad. Every season he has played (Since 2001) his teams made the playoffs every year.
