From the Wire....Pie Traded to Baltimore

Vote 0 Votes

According to a report from the Sun-Times, the Cubs have traded Felix Pie to the Baltimore Orioles for two pitching prospects. The left-hander is believed to be Garrett Olson. The other prospect is right-handed.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the right-hander is Class-A pitcher Henry Williamson.

Garrett Olson was one of the pitchers the Padres were rumored to be interested in acquiring for Jake Peavy.

Stay tuned....

Am i seriously smelling a Peavy deal here. Cause if Olson isnt being flipped for Peavy I would have assumed that Pie would have been going to Baltimore as part of a deal for Brian Roberts. Take care of business Hendry.

Didn't SD want this guy if i remember correctly

The Cubs official web site says the Cubs got LHP Garrett Olson and RHP Henry Williamson

I sure hope this is part of the Padres/Peavy deal.

Because Olson's brief numbers absolutely suck! Certainly would give the ball back to Hill before I gave it to Olson.

I still don't like giving up on Pie. I think this is one McPhail was very excited to get done. I don't think it will be a Lou Brock trade all over again, but I just hope it's not even close.

When it is all said and done the Cubs gave up on this kid way to early. To bad he is going to the wasteland that is baltimore.

This from Louisville, where I'm getting a few of my 2009 bats for some cage work before spring training. Also doing some chauffeuring of three grandkids while daughter recovers from a hip replacementg. (Grandms's doing kitcen duty.) The Pie news strikes me as O.K. If you aren't likely to play him--get some new talent.

Williamson (23) may be the plus surprise. He has the radio pitch--you can hear it, but you can't see it--averaging over 1 K and inning and a very good strike-walk ratio. You wonder if Olson is another stockpile guy for another trade--but he could mature into a decent lefty out of the pen.

So far, the Pie deal is one of the two or three Little People deals, I've been expecting. I hope one of the deals or signings is a catcher above the pay grade of Bakko (sp).

Nice Williamson research Jim. Let's hope Olsen is for the Peavy trade. Boy, Pie is going to have a tough time getting over the AAAA hitting hump in the AL east, but the best of luck to him.

one thing is for sure, JH has been dealing. Now that does not mean he is doing fine or bad. I'm willing to wait but soon he should start giving us news of the plus side.

So let's see...so far it's:

Wood (closer)- gone
DeRosa (Mr. Versatility) gone
Pie (5 tool prospect) - gone

On the flip side we now have:

Bradley (FA, just $$$)
And a bunch of buffons

This is getting silly. Anything short of landing Peavy now, and this offseason has been a bust for Hendry.

Yeah, we gave up on Pie way too early. I'm happy for Pie though, he'll get all kinds of playing time in Baltimore - without the Wrigley Field pressure... I hope he does well. I just wish it could have been a part of a more substantial trade - Olsen looks like a minor league-r to me.

I don't see why they didnt get Roberts in this deal. I think they could have gotten it done. But seeing as how we got Olsen, who the pads really wanted and the other pitchers from cleveland, Peavy is on his way to Chicago. Guaranteed.

I don't think there is any doubt that Peavy is coming to Chicago....the Pads still need to dump salary. They are not going to be competetive by any means, so there is really no need to keep Peavy anyhow.

Pads CEO Sandy Alderson has made comments that he expects Peavy to be with the team when the season starts...BUT he also made an interesting comment the other day stating "I would think anyone on out roster by February 1st would be the group we go to spring training with"

Something will be happening soon.....

I love the idea of a "two-eyed" Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden, Jake Peavy, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly.

Marshall keeps his key role as the lefty in the pen and can spot start when Harden may need a break.

Two big plusses so far in the offseason for a team with a two year window for greatness: Signing Dempster and Bradley. Money keeps us from getting Roberts and made moving Wood and DeRo sad but necessary.

Peavy's $9 mil in '09 and his preference for the Blue leaves him in the still possible range. Gregg could be a solid performer and a plus from Howry. So far, it seems to me we are better in the middle of the lineup, and we have a comparable pitching staff.

I agree old friend. I also looked up Henry Williamson and his hr total given up vs. innings pitched is very promising for a Wrigley Field pitcher. Seems to me could be a starter or a much needed "serious" set up guy in the near future. If we get Peavy I'll say JH did a great job, if we don't add him I'll say he did't. That's how bad we need Peavy.

sorry for the words I ate!

Tin-Tin:

Do you live near Soto?

lol, yes, but I have no idea how close! you Think this Peavy thing will get done?

Tin-Tin:

I believe Peavy will be a cub by opening day. Obviously, he wants to play here and Hendry acquired a bunch of young arms
that hopefully will satisfy Kenin Towers.

This was a pretty good trade I'd say. Pie wouldn't be able to compete against Reed, Fukudome, or Bradley. So this trade had to be done. The timing is good because I heard that Harden has a tear on I believe his shoulder and can't even pitch off the mound. So having Olson, with some experience, is good to have in case of Harden being hurt. Especially if the Cubs don't get a 5th starting pitcher. I do believe that this trade is specifically to get Jake Peavy. Just like what Mike said. If the Cubs were going to trade Pie to the Orioles, it would be for Brian Roberts unless trading Pie is for the package deal to Peavy. So I believe Peavy should be coming to Chicago soon. But is there still going to be a third team involved? The rumors about DeRosa apart of the third team obviously isn't going to happen. So how will this all turn out?

Don't buy that. Harden has a strain that the Cubs knew about when they exercised that option.

I read the same blogs as you and that was discussed ad nauseam there.

Harden will be fine.

But I agree that it is a good trade. Pie doesnt have a spot. If Fukudome gets it together and I believe he will, that puts Reed Johnson in Pie's spot and Gathy will be out of a job.

This smells of a Peavy trade and that excites me. XD

Stay excited.....here in San Diego...all fans believe Peavy is gone. They got excited briefly at a new owner saving him but two issues came to light....
One is that Moorad will not be the full owner for a few years--thus the salary dump stays. and TWO if there was any chance at saving the fan base by keeping Peavy, they would have swung a deal for fan fav Trevor Hoffman as well. When Trevor was allowed to sign with Milwaukee fans here all expect Peavy to follow to Chicago.

Get that jersey ready for him!!

I think a "wild card" that might occur is that Sam Fuld (who has been getting rave reviews in winter ball), will come to spring training, win a spot on the roster, and potentially take on the lead off role.

That would be awesome! Remember how much the fans loved him in his brief appearance in 2007! Fans went crazy with that spectacular catch he made crashing into the wall!

Sam Fuld was discussed today at the Convention, will have my article up soon.

Phil Rogers has been mentioning his performance this winter and until today I was taking it with a grain of salt.

Didn't homeboy light it up in the fall league before last season too?

What happened that spring? Dud.

I hope Fuld stays hot down there. We can give him to San Diego too.

All I can say right now is WoW!! When Peavey arrives, and he will, we will be better than last year. I would argue that we are already but let's not go there.
First as has been stated enough already Pie waqs out of options and for all you disappointed CUBS faithful out there who are writhing ove his departure, get over it. I have had it up to about here with Pie not having had a legitimate shot at th e big leagues. Look, he sucked at the plate, PERIOD.

Woody: Now I will be completely transparent here because I am going to miss Woody. He was a class act and he was with us for 13 years but....... he was a risk every time he went to the mound. He wasn't worth the risk his agents wanted monitarily so for Kerry, best of luck to you and the family in Cleveland. You deserve a nice paycheck and hopefully we will see you when the Tribe comes to Wrigley.

DeRosa: Derosa was a great allaround ball player but we needed to restock the pen and as everyone knows he was on his final year and worth more to deal this year than next. He only spent two years with us CUBS fans, get over it. Stop pouting. First you all say that JimH isn't minding the farm and now some of you are whining cause he paid it attention with the most expendable and valuable chip we had. Again, get over it.

Lastly I want to address MB. This guy is a straight up Playah!!! His bat will electrify and his defense will have you screaming at the top of your lungs! The guy is all about class and he deserves our 100% support. Many of you here are so nearsighted that you fail to see the sun through the clouds. He's definately not as bad as Manny!! He will not be a Sosa in the clubhouse!! He will not be disinterested or apathetic. This guy is going to play his ass off and all you RF bleacher bums GET READY!!!!

Look, I can be justly accused of drinking the JH Kool Aid but lemme tell ya, this guy is respected around the league. He know what we need to win now and he has gotten every piece thus far. Now if he can pry away JP before 1 FEB, I better see people like you Brian and Aaron get off the mas case. This guy is simply the best GM we have had in my lifetime!! (I am 42) I love the guy...

Here's to seeing the headline......

Peavy traded to the CUBS!!

GO CUBBIES!!!

I agree that JH is the best GM we have had in my lifetime as well (I'm 38). Well maybe next to Ed Lynch (just kidding)

I like the Bradley signing for his intensity. Thats whats been missing. I'm hoping he will be good....I'm not so sure how electrifying he will be. At the plate, last year was the first year he hit over 20 home runs and made it to just 22. Prior to that only once did he hit more than 13. So, electrifying? We will see. As for electrifying defense....his overall OF fielding percentage is just average at .983. His RF fielding average is a horrid .967. We all know Wrigley and RF is a chore with the sun. Just hope he is up to the task. The fact he has been limited in the OF the last two seasons also concerns me. I'm hoping for decent fielding...I don't think we will see anything electrifying.

As far as him not being as bad as Manny. I'm not sure how you compare the two. Bradley's issues have been that he's been a nut case. Manny's issue has been that he's appeared selfish, but many of his former teammates have said he's a great teammate. (Just as some of Bradley's teammates have spoken up). Huge difference between Manny and Milton....Manny is ten times the player Milton is and is a proven winner. I'd take Manny on the Cubs in a heartbeat. Just look at the difference he made with the Dodgers once he arrived. In 53 games he hit almost .400!! (.396) He hit 17 HR's and 53 RBI's in just 187 at bats! The guy carried the team.

As for DeRosa, the reason people are attached to him is not the length of time he was a Cub, but the fact he was supersub. Aaron Miles is NO Mark DeRosa. It's going to take two players to replace DeRo because now there is nobody to back up Ramirez at 3B. Assuming we pick up Aurilia, I still do not like the combo of Aurilia and Miles replacing DeRo. Yeah, Hendry got a few minor league pitchers. But he was going to be able to do that with Hill, Pie and Cedeno all unlikely to stick with the team.

I agree with you on Wood. Thanks for the memories, but he was too high a risk and not an elite closer. Marmol quite possibly can be.

Pie, as many including me have argued, was not given a fair shot. Unfortunately he came along as the Cubs were in a win all mentality. But he was not given a fair shot. He had two brief chances. He should have been put in the line up and left alone to develop. Not all young kids come out blazing. He's still very young for development. Look at last year...how do you develop a young kid batting in the 8th spot???? Ahead of the picther? You are kidding right....he wouldnt get a fastball to hit if his life depended on it in the 8th spot. That was setting him up for failure. A kid marked with 5-tools doesnt just disappear. With the line up we had around him, we could have used his great defense and speed in CF and hoped that his bat came around. But we'll see how he does in Baltimore.

Just a couple other Manny stats comparing to Mr. Bradley....

In his 9 year career, Milton has 399 career RBI's. In just three years from 1998-2000 Manny had 432 RBI's.

Bradley's career OBP .377
Manny's .411

Bradley's Batting Average .280
Manny's .314

Bradley's Slugging Percentage .457
Manny's .593

I'll take Manny being Manny ANY day!

About Mark Derosa. I'm getting sick of people talking about him. He's gone and thats it. We had his best two years of his career. He hit more homeruns last year than he ever has. He will be 34 this year and has heart problems that we all know of. I mean I loved the guy on our team too but he was the best he was gonna be. He will go down hill from here. Oh yah, PIE sucks the end

As for the comment on the Cubs having a bunch of buffoons, my take is that with the exception of DeRosa (who they wouldn't be able to afford next year anyways), they got rid of all of the dead weight on the team. Kerry Wood? Please! Is this the same Kerry Wood that went on the DL 8 million times and took the Cubs for 8 billion while being on the DL? Love Kerry Wood all you want, but it's the mentality of keeping guys like Wood, Prior, Patterson, and Pie that have cost this team for years. I wish Kerry Wood the best, but it's time to part ways and move on.

Is this the same Felix Pie (Corey Patterson clone) that the Cubs were suppose to wait for forever to develop, only to find out that they never will develop? The Cubs don't need anymore 150 plus strikeout players as starters. Like I said above, I wish you the best, but it's time to part ways and move on.

Jim Hendry has picked up a bona fide reliever (Gregg), a true power hitting left handed right fielder (Bradley), a very good young 25 year old left handed starting pitcher in (Olsen), added depth to the bench (Miles), re-signed an all-star starter in Dempster, while getting rid of the contracts of Marquis, Wood, Howry, Ward, and Jim Edmonds.

The Cubs have a very good starting staff (best in the Central by far), and now they will be able to ease their minds and select the fifth starter between Marshall, Olsen, and Samardzija. Whoever doesn't make it as a starter will then shore up the bullpen.

The Cubs future looks very bright considering the other teams in the NL Central. And now the Cubs have alot more minor league talent to be able to pull the trigger at the trade deadline. I think Hendry has done a masterful job considering the restraints of not knowing the future owner and the flexibility he will have. Enjoy what he (Hendry) has done for now, because the new owner(s) could very easily take this teams payroll right back down again.

If we don't get Peavy (and I don't think we will get him), this offseason has been a total bust.
