Cubs and Pirates on the MLB Network

Vote 0 Votes

As part of the All-Time Games series, the MLB Network will telecast the shootout of the Cubs versus the Pirates from Sunday, April 21, 1991 at Three Rivers Stadium on Sunday night at 7:00pm C.T.

For those counting down the day until the Cubs Convention (the CCO will post the full schedule of the 24th Annual Convention later on Sunday) and to Spring Training, the MLB Network will give the Faithful a chance to watch a Cubs team that featured the likes of Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Andre Dawson, Shawon Dunston and George Bell.

Cubs Starting Lineup:

  • Jerome Walton - CF
  • Ryne Sandberg - 2B
  • Mark Grace - 1B
  • George Bell - LF
  • Andre Dawson - RF
  • Shawon Dunston - SS
  • Gary Scott - 3B
  • Erik Pappas - C
  • Mike Harkey - P

Pirates Starting Lineup:

  • Orlando Merced - 1B
  • Jay Bell - SS
  • Andy Van Slyke - CF
  • Bobby Bonilla - RF
  • Barry Bonds - LF
  • Jeff King - 3B
  • Mike LaValliere - C
  • Jose Lind - 2B
  • Randy Tomlin - P

The Cubs lost the game 13-12 in 11 innings but Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson both went 3-for-6. The Cubs scored five runs in the top of the 11th....the Pirates scored six in the bottom half for the win. Heathcliff Slocomb and Mike Bielecki surrendered the six runs and Bielecki took the loss.

The first eleven days of the MLB Network has been very successful. From the historical games, to Ken Burns' Baseball, to the Hot Stove Show the network has not disappointed. The new channel should add a new dimension to Spring Training and the regular season that other outlets simply cannot provide.

For all of the criticism Major League Baseball receives, they appear to have gotten one right.

    HOLY COW!

  • mike

After Bonds' first at bat, Carey says something like, "...and Bonds fails to reach base for the 27th consecutive time."

And all I'm thinking is that's when he started juicing.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

    Bring in Marmol!!!!

  • Neil

If this game was in progress, I can imagine the uproar with losing the lead. In fact, I can 'hear' Aaron now....

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Very True....I'm sure alot of the faithful (myself included) would be posting furiously here....

Regardless.....I loved this flash back and even more so that it was a Cubs WGN broadcast!! Love hearing our beloved Harry....and of course Stoney....loved how he criticized Walton for his bonehead bunt late in the game....

I look forward to more! Although, I recall the Sandberg game was an NBC game of the week...but that will be fun to hear Costas and Garagiola....

  • Neil

Dave Smith is on the mound in the 9th....

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Just read you guys had 10 inches of snow at O'Hare yesterday..... we had just the opposite....it was 85 degrees and Sunny here in San Diego today! As Harry would say "It's a beautiful day for baseball".....

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Sutcliffe isn't Sutcliffe without the beard.... he looks weird without it....

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Close...it was the 92 team...they won the division three years in a row from 90-92 and they haven't seen first place since....

Funny to see little Douggie Dacenzo!!

  • Neil

Joe...thanks, I could not remember for sure and did not take the time to look it up.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Seeing Assenmacher bat reminds me of a question I had from nack in the day...why did a select few helmets have the white strip in the middle of the bill of the helmet? I remember Bowa's helmet always seemed to have it, and now I see it on the helmet Assenmacher has....

  • Neil

Joe...you've got me there. I do remember some guys wrote their name on the helmets.

It is amazing how empty Three Rivers was....also, wasn't the 1991 Pirates team the last one that finished .500 or better?

    Then Sid slid....

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Buckner was one of my favorites...he and his black bat and that bushy stache/eyebrows...

Thats what I want to see....some old games from 83-84 when I first started watching.... I dont remember if there were any memorable games from 1983....all I remember from 83 was Lee Elia's infamous tirade about the fans....

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

WOW.....I forgot the days when Harry switched to Radio in the middle three innings.....

How young does Thom Brenneman look??? lol

I don't think another Cubs pitcher should be allowed to wear #22. Seems they don't live up to the hype. (Mike Harkey....and then years later Mark Prior)

  • Neil

Also, Joe I am with you on the #22. I wish Kevin Hart would change numbers.

Do you recall another former #22 for the Cubs in the early 80's?

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

The ONLY #22 I associate with the Cubs is the one and only Bill Buckner.....

    I'm having so many flashbacks....

    * Cookie Cutter Stadium

    * Artificial Turf

    * Arne Harris :-(

    * No scoreboard graphic throughout game

    * "No pepper games" sign behind plate

Loved the mention by Thom about future GM Steve Stone.....if Hendry leaves with new ownership....Stoney should be given that job!

  • Neil

    Joe...Bingo! Bill Buckner.

It is amazing when the Pirates scored those two runs in the 5th I had to remind myself this is a game from 18 years ago.

  • Neil

Joe...this is bringing back a lot of memories. Also the mention of the World Champion Reds....Lou Piniella's Reds.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Lovin the broadcast with Harry!!! Old school graphics....

A defensive graphic that wasn't brought to us by Diet Pepsi...Not a single player in the field over 200 pounds....Barry Bonds before he roided up....

    I MISS HARRY & STEVE!!!

    HOLY COW!!!!

  • Neil

Hey guys...they are showing the WGN-TV broadcast of this game....Harry Caray and Steve Stone.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I for one don't care if it's a losing game.....heck it was over 15 years ago....and it was an April game not a playoff game....no big deal....

I will enjoy the walk down memory lane seeing all the old Cubs...and even the old Pirates....

Hell if we wanted to see replays of winning games of the old days that certainly would limit us now wouldnt it...lol

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Joe S:

FYI, I don't care if it was from 1900, I still hate it when they loose. Loosing hurts me more than winning makes me happy.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I understand....I don't like losing either....but for me personally I can't say a game from 15 years ago bothers me--especially when it wasn't even a playoff game. I know some people hold on to it, but it's just not me. I'll enjoy watching the broadcast...just hoping it's a WGN broadcast with Harry!! Be nice to flashback for awhile.

Hopefully we see a few more old Cubs games on there....

  • Photo Chris

I've been watching the MLB network too but I can't believe Comcast in not carrying the HD version!

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

I remember that game. I also remember vomiting afterwords. I will only watch games in which they win. The MLB network

should show "The Sandberg Game" or the 1989 game that the Cubs trailed by 8 runs vs Houston and won. Watching reruns of losing games brings back bad memories.

I will pass on this tonight and watch HBO.

  • Neil

Jim...I share the same feelings but with the hall vote due on Monday I thought it would be good to pass on a game that featured Andre Dawson going 3-for-6 and hitting a home run.

The MLB Network is supposed to air the Sandberg Game, I have not seen a date yet.

I will watch the beginning of the game and take a trip down memory lane....but turn it off after the top of the 11th.
