Done Tweaking? A Look at the Cubs Roster

Reportedly Jim Hendry has more changes in store for Lou Piniella before pitchers and catchers report to Fitch Park on February 13th. The roster Piniella will have to play with in Arizona has begun to take shape with several additions, subtractions and non-roster invitations.

The Cubs do not have an empty spot on their 40-man roster as of the last Monday in January. So if the Cubs are set on adding Paul Bako to the mix, they must release a player or sign Bako to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training….and the same can be said for Juan Uribe.

Here’s where the Cubs roster stands with just under a month left before their first exhibition game in the Cactus League…..

Barring injuries there are a couple of spots that will be open for competition once camp begins in a few weeks. However one advantage for the Cubs, and many teams throughout the league, could be the World Baseball Classic. Injury concerns aside, due to the length of Spring Training this year and with many of the games’ stars involved in the tournament, players that would have been a long shot to make the team, will have a chance to play.

For example, Blake DeWitt took advantage of playing time he received when the Dodgers left for China last spring to face the Padres. DeWitt did not figure into the team’s plans last February but due to injuries and him impressing the Dodgers’ brass, he made the Dodgers’ 25-man roster….and figured heavily down the stretch as Jeff Kent spent time on the DL.

Do the Cubs have a Blake DeWitt somewhere in their system?

Mike Fontenot and Sean Marshall have one option year left while Jeff Samardzija has two. David Patton was acquired in a pre-arranged deal with the Reds for cash on December 11th. The Reds selected Patton from the Rockies in the Rule 5 Draft. If Patton fails to make the Cubs 25-man roster out of camp (and he must remain on the active roster throughout the season unless he is placed on the DL) he will be offered back to the Rockies.

The Cubs are rumored to be interested in Aaron Heilman, sending Ronny Cedeno to the Mariners….and then there is the never ending Jake Peavy saga. Many have questioned if Garrett Olson, Jeff Stevens and Luis Vizcainowill ever put on a Cubs’ uniform.

Jim Hendry may or may not make the changes he is rumored to be interested in….but one thing is for certain, the remaining weeks leading up to camp and the first exhibition game should be anything but boring.
