Winter Meetings 2008: Cubs Waiting to Pull the Trigger?

Vote 0 Votes

Are there any truths buried in all of the rumors coming from the Bellagio in Las Vegas? The second day of the Winter Meetings were filled with more of the same for the Chicago Cubs....a lot of talk and speculation. According to the Tribune, Jim Hendry spoke with "representatives of three of four free agents" and according to multiple reports the Cubs appear to be the holdup in the trade that would net them Jake Peavy.

Mark DeRosa is "considered expendable because he's in the final year of his contract and doesn't have a no-trade clause" according to the Tribune. Also, Jason Marquis and half of his $9.875 million dollar contract replaced Sean Marshall in the proposed trade for Peavy. The Sun-Times indicated Mark DeRosa might not be in the proposed three to four-team deal after all.

The Tribune also indicated the Cubs are "focusing on a left-handed, middle-of-the-order hitter, and may be closing in on switch-hitter Milton Bradley." The Cubs have interest in Bobby Abreu, but "there had been no formal talks as of Tuesday evening." Abreu's agent said he is interested in the Cubs.

Here's the rest from a confusing Day Two at the Winter Meetings....

A report from Cubs.com indicated the Cubs have been contacted by at least five teams "regarding their players as they try to become that third team allegedly need to complete" the Jake Peavy trade....."and Mark DeRosa's name is not the only one being mentioned." According to Cubs.com, one team asked about Carlos Marmol.

Jim Hendry from Cubs.com:

"You can't get caught up in everybody's rumors or what people say. We feel confident that before we get to camp, we're going to have a better baseball team than we had when the season ended. That's our goal, and we're not worried about time frames or what somebody says we might be doing. It could still change drastically on the type of plan we thought would go down, and we could end up with a different kind of player."

Peter Gammons reported that the Padres "feel a lot more confident about the Jake Peavy deal tonight than yesterday"....and Gammons' source said it is not likely the deal will happen in Vegas, but it is possible.

Milton Bradley

The Tribune mentioned the fact that Milton Bradley could give Lou Piniella a little more flexibility in the outfield. Bradley can play centerfield which would allow Kosuke Fukudome to play in right and center, along with Reed Johnson in center against left-handers with Bradley patrolling right field.

The Cubs and Rays are the two teams showing the most interest in Bradley according to the Tribune.

Jake Peavy, Mark DeRosa and Jason Marquis

According to a report in the Tribune, Crane Kenney stated on Tuesday:

"The team can afford to add a lucrative long-term contract without knowing exactly who the new owner will be, which suggests Peavy's $63 million contract is within the projected budgets that already have been presented to the bidders."

The Tribune indicated the deal for Peavy does not appear imminent, but there has been "enough groundwork to pull it off quickly."

According to a report on Cubs.com, the Cubs are "far from a Peavy deal".

Jayson Stark reported the Cubs and Padres do not necessarily need a third or fourth team to make a deal for Jake Peavy. Stark doubts the deal will be completed in Las Vegas and mentioned the Cubs might have to pick up Peavy's option for 2013. Stark mentioned a third team might be needed to take on another contract and that is where Mark DeRosa might come in.

One thing that appears consistent over the last week is that the Cubs must move Jason Marquis and some of his contract. The reports have varied on how much, but anywhere from $3 million to $5 million seems like will be departing the North Side when Jason Marquis is traded.

Jim Hendry and Kevin Towers were scheduled to meet again on Tuesday night and Towers told CBS Sports.com that the two sides have made progress, "we're just not there yet."

The Cubs and Padres haven't "completely settled on the pieces" but there is "a general agreement." According to CBS Sports, Josh Vitters, Kevin Hart, Angel Guzman and Ronny Cedeno could possibly be in the deal. The Cubs would send Mark DeRosa to the Phillies for possibly J.A. Happ or Chris Coste to be included with Felix Pie going to the Orioles for Garrett Olson. CBS Sports also indicated the deal might have to wait until after Thursday's Rule 5 Draft to be announced and might not be made official until Friday or Saturday....the Padres might need to clear room in their 40-man roster.

Reports from the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Sun-Times backed up the CBS Sports report that the deal might be made before the end of the Winter Meetings, but will not be made official until after Thursday's Rule 5 Draft. It does appear that the Cubs are viewing Mark DeRosa and his salary for next season as a way to save money and make room for Jake Peavy.

The Sun-Times indicated a Phillies source said they are interested in Mark DeRosa, but "he didn't expect the Cubs to include the versatile infielder/outfielder." The Phillies are interested in other Cubs players but "wouldn't get more specific."

Yahoo Sports reported the Peavy deal hinges only on the Cubs moving Jason Marquis.

Jeremy Hermida

Ken Rosenthal mentioned the Cubs interest in Hermida on Tuesday afternoon. Several reports have indicated the Marlins will probably not trade Hermida.

    Condolences Jeff!

Pryor Wrigley is surely going to a place with lots of Ivy and a faithful following

  • Boseph Heyden

At this point, you have to forget about Peavy. The Padres have an unreasonable deadline and have a slightly high asking price. Right now, there are three things the Cubs need to do:

    1) Finish up with Milton Bradley and get him signed. It's a 50/50 shot it'll be a meaningful signing, but walking away from the Winter Meetings with something will at least make them not a complete failure.

    2) Get Randy Johnson. Again, a shot in the dark, but he's still tons better than Marquis.

    3) The Phillies want DeRosa. The Orioles want Pie. And you can throw Marquis into either of those trades. So you find out who in the Phillies' farm system the Orioles want, send DeRosa (and maybe Marquis and someone else) their way for said prospects, and then send those prospects, Pie, Cedeno, and, if you still have him after the Phillies, Marquis, to the Orioles for Brian Roberts.

To those who think our rotation is good enough without Peavy.

    1. Harden(great stuff but) ?

    - injury prone. 5

    - IP per game average it seems.

    2. Zambrano was not reliable.

    3. Dempster was great all year.

    - he blew it in the playoffs

    4. Lily had a better year.

    But inconsistent.

All i am saying is I love our guys but i don't think our rotation is built for the playoffs as is. You add Peavy and we will dominate.

Don't trade DeRo. He was great in the playoffs. He is that one player that a World Series winner seems to have.

I also think they should hang on to Guzman.

I cannot believe some of these rumors the amount we would have to give up for Peavy is absolutely insance.

  • Brandon

Hey guys I love this website. Check out my new cubs blog! http://cubsblog-cubbiefan07.blogspot.com/

  • Matt Haggard

    Long time no see everyone.

In the offseason I need Cubbie breathers. I want to make a couple of points.

Yes, I'm still upset about Kerry's departure. But heres how I'm choosing to look at it now.

For the BoSox to break their curse they had to lose a player that they had come to love over nearly a decade in Nomar Garciapparra.

I'm hoping it takes Kerry departure to do the same for us.

Kerry was the last vestige of the losing team years and maybe the last vestige of the losing team mentality.

Now..as for DeRosa being traded in a possible deal for Peavy..

Its nice to see the Cubs sell high for once. Even if its on Dero.

I think Fontenot with a little help from Theriot/veteran signing backup platoon at 2B would work wonderful.

Keeping sample sizes in mind..Take a look at their stats (162 game avg.):

    Dero and Fonty compare favorably.

I'd rather lose DeRo than Sean Marshall - especially given the health concerns of what will be our five aces tandem.

  • Matt Haggard

Jeff, I remember when the kid was born too. This news shocked and upset me greatly. My condolences for Pryor Wrigley and your family as well.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I wish we'd make the Peavy trade already.....with as much as I want him....I am soooooooo tired of the rumors.....lol

  • Gramps

    Condolences Jeff.

My prayers are with you, your wife and Pryor.

  • Boseph Heyden

You want to trade Rich Harden, who's only real health concern, it seems, is that the Cubs are way too overprotective of him, for Joel Zumaya...a man who managed to injure himself playing GUITAR HERO?

  • MIke D

The thing I worry most about with Bradley is his health. He only played in 126 games last year, and at least half of them were at DH because of problems with BOTH knees. At 31 years old those knees are going to continue to ache more and more. He has only played 140 games in a season once in his career. He his a very talented player but to think he is going to play center and right field 140+ times this year is just foolish.

As for daydreaming...how about Hoffpauir and Harden to Detroit for Granderson and Zumaya??? Hoffpauir is going nowhere behind D Lee and Hardens health worries me. Not to mention Detroit needs SP and Hoffpauir could 1B/DH. Then sign Peavy and Johnson to round out our staff. Peavy/Z/Lilly/Demp/Johnson with Marmol/Zumaya/Gregg in the pen isn't too shabby. Granderson will be 28 and has hit 19,23,22 HRs the last 3 seasons and could be our perfect leadoff man.

    How about it????

  • paul k

Don't know if this means anything, but word on the street is Peavy's agent has checked out of his hotel.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Word is correct...Peavy returned to San Diego yesterday.

  • nick

Jeff, you have my deepest sympathy. Your son and your family will be in my prayers.

  • Josh Man

First and foremost, Jeff, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Second, I feel like DeRo is too important a piece of the Cubs puzzle to give up for Peavy when the pitching staff is not the problem. I'm fine giving up Vitters, Marquis, Cedeno, Hart, and Pie and recieving Peavy, but if DeRo is involved then it isn't worth it.

Third, I think that Milton Bradley would be a great addition to the team. I live in the Metroplex in Texas and saw a lot of Rangers baseball and Bradley is exactly what we need on offense, especially with the ability to sub DeRo in right and Fontenot at 2nd in order to keep Bradley fresh and healthy. Bradley's OBP and power numbers would be an awesome addition to the middle of the lineup.

  • agustin rexach

Jeff, you are not a downer and I'm deeply sorry. I wish you and your family strength and peace.

  • Lows005

Jeff, I'm terribly sorry to hear that. I will keep him and your family in my prayers. It is tough to lose a loved one, especially a child, but during this time of the year is especially tough. God must have needed a little more Cubbie faith up in Heaven. My deepest sympathies are with you.

  • Logan

that is some kind of day dreaming going on there..... in my day dream, the cubs traded for Roberts and Peavy, then signed Abreu, then sold the Cubs to me for $1000.....

  • jeffnoklahoma

hello everyone. I truly hate to be a downer. I know we've never met or talked to one another, but my son Pryor Wrigley passed away Monday evening. Please have him in your thoughts & prayers. The Cubs fans have lost a good one. Once again hate to be a downer, but i read this site everyday and think of everyone in high regards..

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

Jeff, thoughts and prayers definitely are with you during this trying time. I came across this poem and thought it was appropriate to pass on.....

    We are connected,

    My child and I, by

    An invisible cord

    Not seen by the eye.

    It's not like the cord

    That connects us 'til birth

    This cord can't been seen

    By any on Earth.

    This cord does it's work

    Right from the start.

    It binds us together

    Attached to my heart.

    I know that it's there

    Though no one can see

    The invisible cord

    From my child to me.

    The strength of this cord

    Is hard to describe.

    It can't be destroyed

    It can't be denied.

    It's stronger than any cord

    Man could create

    It withstands the test

    Can hold any weight.

    And though you are gone,

Though you're not here with me,

    The cord is still there

    But no one can see.

    It pulls at my heart

    I am bruised...I am sore,

But this cord is my lifeline

    As never before.

    I am thankful that God

    Connects us this way

    A father and child

    Death can't take it away!

  • Neil

Jeff...Abby and I will keep your family in our prayers and we send our best.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Jeff Oklahoma:

I'm sadden to hear about the loss of your little boy. I remember when you announced his birth. I am shocked to hear about this and feel devastated for you and your family. May God bless you during this tragic period in your life.

  • eddy

paul k...i had the same dream lol

i cant wait to see what happens with peavy

    Peavy

    Zambrano

    Dempster

    Harden

    Lilly

    thats nasty

  • paul k

In my daydream, while pretending to look productive at work, Hendry acquired Peavy and Brian Roberts in a four team trade then signed Bradley. Lineup looked something like this:

    2B Roberts

    SS Theriot

    RF Bradley

    LF Soriano

    3B Ramirez

    1B Lee

    C Soto

    CF Johnson/Fukudome

    With a starting rotation of:

    Peavy

    Zambrano

    Dempster

    Harden

    Lilly

  • shawn

I just dont think you can let a peavy get away. Love Derosa to death and our young talent is alot but what an amazing staff that would be. Big Z would be our third if not forth. And it looks like if they do sign him its not at the cost of the big lefty bat that i agree is a bigger priority.

  • Rob

Bryan, I agree that DeRo is not expendable at all. Hell, he was probably our offensive MVP last year..at least most of the season. Those are important offensive numbers that we would lose. Even if we get a big lefty bat it seems we're still coming up short offensively. Just seems like a very bad move.

Maybe, just maybe, Fonty+Fukudome+Reed=DeRo's output. If they trade DeRo, the Cubs better pray like hell that Fukudome makes one big turn around into an outstanding offensive player..cause if he doesn't by the All-Star break, I say ship him out.

  • Michael

I have all the respect in the world for CC after what he did for the Brewers last year, but I bet that contract will be one the Yankees regret. Maybe not next year or the year after, but 7 years is a very long time for any pitcher, especially one as overweight as CC!

  • Nathanael

Seeing CC's contract makes me realize what a bargain Peavy's contract really is. I don't think we should have to give up Derosa though.

  • nick

JimK, I saw they agreed on the deal, but I saw the numbers were 7 years 160 million.

  • JimK

The NY Post is quoted as saying that CC Sabathia has agreed to the Yankees offer--believed to be 6 and $120 mil. That should speed up the Burnett and Lowe decisions.

Early reports this morning seem to take the Peavy saga a couple of steps back towards "no deal close". Maybe that gets JH back to a focus on the lefty bat. I still prefer Abreu.

  • Neil

CC is done. He is a Yankee, I think Ken Rosenthal just said on XM, 7 years and $160 million.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Bryan:

Look at the deals that Hendry has doled out to: Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Zambrano,

Dempster (Twice),and Lilly. Most of these deals include no trade provisions.

The Cubs have been very generous the past 5 years.

  • Bryan

So we view DeRosa and his 20+ HR's and 80+ RBI's, ability to play about every position, and great clubhouse leadership as expendable. Now that's typical Cub logic.

So the "tally" for Peavy seems to be DeRosa, Pie, Vitters, Marquis, Hart, and Guzman all leaving to various teams to get one player in exchange. You gotta be kidding.

I still remember when DeRosa signed with the Cubs. He just wanted to play in front of what he viewed as the greatest fans in baseball. So he signs a 3 year deal, performs exceptionally well (and without complaint) and this is the thanks he gets. Free agent players down the road will remember the treatment Wood and DeRosa are getting from the Cubs leadership.

  • Barry

While I am not thrilled about losing Woody I am very happy he received a multiyear deal by a great ballclub. Cleveland fans will appreciate Woody and there will be lesser expectations their than at Wrigley.

Congratulations Woody!! You deserve anything and everything you get!!

I like very much the idea of getting Milton Bradley. I think he gives the best options for Lou and he is a gamer. Hopefully he'll appreciate the faithful at Wrigley.... His skin is not the thickest of professional athletes!!

Not liking the thought of the "09" CUBS w/o DeRosa.... I hope these reports are false. Dero is an outstanding athlete and can play anywhere behind the pitcher. Those kinda guys come around once in a lifetime....

LOL apparantly our team CAN afford "ASS" lol

  • Larry B

The thing we should be worried about with Bradley is not that Lou can handle him or Perry but can Bradley handle the home crowd. Our fans at Wrigley can be very tough on our on team especially the outfielders. I don't think this a good idea.

  • 09shine

"The team can afford to ass a lucrative long-term contract"

lol.. i think the quote is "add"

  • Neil

09shine...good catch. I fixed it. Thanks
