Thank You Kerry

Once a year, we gather as families, as friends, as neighbors, and as humans, to thank everyone, to thank our country, to thank our loved-ones, to thank ourselves, to thank our life, to thank whomever or whatever. 10 days before Thanksgiving, there is one person that we all owe a "thanks."

  • Thank you for it all.
  • Thank you for being you.
  • Thank you for never giving up.
  • Thank you for trying.
  • Thank you wanting.
  • Thank you for blocking traffic while slowing down your car in the late-afternoon of a mid-summer Sunday to sign a baseball for a five-year-old being hoisted up by his father.
  • Thank you for giving it your all.
  • Thank you for the homerun in Game 7 of the '03 NLCS.
  • Thank you for your performance and MVP award in the '03 NLDS.
  • Thank you for being a leader.
  • Thank you for being the voice of a team.
  • Thank you for being the face of the team.
  • Thank you for wearing the #34 in a way that would have made Walter proud.
  • Thank you for raising money.
  • Thank you for being a real person.
  • Thank you for being funny.
  • Thank you for marrying a Carmel High School grad ... Go Corsairs!
  • Thank you for giving me hope.
  • Thank you for busting that boombox.
  • Thank you for being picked at, poked, prodded and hacked more than any other human your age.
  • Thank you for wanting to be better.
  • Thank you for being honest.
  • Thank you for giving it one more chance.
  • Thank you for allowing me to witness your return to the mound in August of 2007, giving me a chill I will never forget.
  • Thank you for being a stand-up guy.
  • Thank you for being the same person you were "way back when."
  • Thank you for the 20 strikeouts.
  • Thank you for defining "teammate."
  • Thank you for the emotion, the will, and the fight.
  • Thank you for loving Ronny.
  • Thank you for doing interviews.
  • Thank you caring.
  • Thank you for wanting to win.
  • Thank you for the hometown discount last year.
  • Thank you for making me happy to be a Cubs fan, when all else was lost.
  • Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The all-stars and superstars have come and gone in the past 20 years, but when I think of the Cubs, I have a hard time picturing anyone before I picture you.

I wish you the best, I do ... in the American League.

I hope you will be back someday, whether to close out the clinching game of the World Series or to the raise your flag atop the foul poll at Wrigely. One way or another, you will be back. You are a Chicago Cub forever. No matter where you go or what you do, you will always be a Cub.

People whisper, people talk, names come out, and as far as Cubs fans go, these are the names: Ernie, Billy, Ronny and Ryne.

Well, from now on, we will have to add Kerry to that list.

Stay Classy ... Mr. Wood!

    Kerry will be missed.

The ones that are talking only about his stats. Even though they are right that he underacheived dont understand. Plus, it was like he was chop liver last year. He did a very good job as a closer.

Kerry(and prior) were the symbol of our hopes ever since 2002. And if it wasn't for injuries, they may have got us there.

Not to mention the time he came in and basically told the cubs to pay him what they thought was fair. Didn't complain about going into the pen. The guy was a team player and a leader. For that alone he will be missed.

  • Larry Boodry

Tea and muffins?!?!? While I'm sure you might get a few takers with that invitation, I personally would go with pizza and beer.

As for Kerry's personality when you met him, maybe he was having a bad day,

or maybe he sensed your attitude towards him. In any case, he is known to be moody...I would still choose him for my team - for his talent AND character - over Prior or Sammy Sosa.

  • Mark

Character? How about personality. I met him and he had a personality like a bag of rocks. Despite that,I could care less. I've met many players and they have a job to do. This is baseball, not having players over for tea and muffins. See ya Kerry, don't let the door hit you on the way out!

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I love the post, but do you notice a theme of the post? Most of the thank you's are for Kerry's CHARACTER not his PLAYING ABILITY.

The 2003 NLCS Homerun was mentioned, The 2003 NLDS MVP Awarcd was mentioned, and his 20 K game was mentioned. Nothing else had to do with him being an outstanding player.

He was absolutely a great guy, did wonderful things for charity, and was solid in the clubhouse.

He is NOT anywhere in the same breath as Santo, Williams, Banks or Sandberg.

As a player, you listed about all that he did.

He only pitched over 30 games as a starter twice. He never won more than 14 games in a season. Mark Prior had 18 wins in a season for us.

2003 was Wood's best season with 14 wins, an ERA of 3.20 and 266 K's. But he also lost 11, walked 100 batters, Hit 21 and threw 10 wild pitches.

Compare that with Mark Priors best season mentioned above, which was also in 2003. Prior had 18 wins, and ERA of 2.43 and 250 K's. He walked half as many as Wood (50), hit half as many (10) and threw the same number of Wild Pitches (9). Seems to me Prior was statistically better than Woody when you compare their "career best years".

Again, Woody was a great guy. But as a player...he merely had his moments and never lived up to his true potential because of all the injuries.

  • John G

Unfortunately the names Wood and Prior will be forever linked because of one year, 2003, and what might have been. As far as character, the true measure of a man, there should never be a link between these two names. I'll take Kerry Wood anytime over Mark Prior. Statistics don't mean squat. Leadership does.

  • Joe S. (San Diego)

I completely agree John G. The point that was being made was that Kerry Wood was a great man....but not much to miss as a ball player. Prior was mentioned only to compare stats for that reason.

  • Ben

You guys are acting like a member of your family just died! We lost an underachieving pitcher who never lived up to the hype after his 20 strikeout game and was relegated to the bullpen because of injuries.

    Get over it!!!

  • Larry Boodry

Great post, Brian...For all those things and more, Kerry Wood will be missed, more so than the 'star' whose boombox he 'allegedly' smashed...For all of his HRs, Sammy caused hardly a ripple when he departed, which just goes to show, character DOES matter.

  • JimK

MSNBC (the stock market daily program) is reporting that Mark Cuban is being charged by the SEC for insider trading. The claim is that he sold 600,000 shares of Mamma.com one day before the company entered into some kind of transaction that diluted the value of the shares. The dilution is reported to have been about 9%. I would think that Mark is smarter than to do that.

  • Josh Man

Amen. We'll miss you K Dub.

  • Mark

Okay, I think I'm going to be sick!!

LET HIM GO......now let's concentrate on next year!

  • Mark

Okay, I think I'm going to be sick.

    LET HIM GO!!!!

Let's turn the page and get ready for next year!

  • Bo

I SWEAR THAT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. AT FIRST I WAS OK WITH LETTING KERRY GO AND ALLOW HIM TO GET A CRAZY CONTRACT SOMEWHERE ELSE, ALL THE WHILE KNOWING THAT HE WOULD BE BACK SOMEDAY IN SOME CAPACITY. I HAVE SINCE CHANGED MY MIND. SOME PLAYERS SHOULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH CERTAIN TEAMS THEIR WHOLE CARREER AND KERRY IS ONE OF THEM. ITS AS BAD AS SEEING FARVE IN A JETS UNIFORM. IT IS HARD NOW BUT JUST WAIT TILL WE SEE HIM SPORTING ANOTHER COLOR 34. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WATCH....THANKS FOR THE ARTICLE!IT WAS AWESOME

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Brian:

    Thank you.
