Soto Named National League Rookie of the Year

Vote 0 Votes

According to several reports, Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto was named the NL Rookie of the Year on Monday becoming the organization's first rookie of the year since Kerry Wood in 1998. Soto received 31 of 32 first place votes.... Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds received the other first place vote.

Geovany Soto became the first rookie catcher to start for the National League in the All-Star game and became the first catcher to win the Rookie of the Year award and lead his team to the playoffs in the same season. Mike Piazza was the last catcher to win the award, 15 years ago for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Soto becomes the fifth rookie of the year winner for the organization. Kerry Wood (1998), Jerome Walton (1989), Ken Hubbs (1962) and Billy Williams (1961) were the other recipients.

Evan Langoria of the Tamp Bay Rays was named the American League Rookie of the Year.

Congratulations Soto!!

cograts soto well deserved but how who the hell didnt vote for soto how could u even think that votto was better soto should have had all 32 first place votes!!!!!!!!

GEO!!!

SOTO!!!

GEO!!!

SOTO!!!

Woohoo!!!

I sooo cant wait to say this again next season.

GOOOOO GEO!!

I imagine the lone first place vote for Votto came from a Cincinatti beat writer...

Votto's numbers wouldnt have even been near Geo's had the Cubs pitchers not padded his stats all season...lol

And what crackpots actually gave Fukudome a second and third place vote?? Did voting take place in May??

Matt Haggard, you look like Howie Mandel :)

Great Job Soto! A bonafide star, home-grown catcher. The Jewel of the Cubs farm system

joe, i cant recall how well did votto do against our cubbies?

Agustin's cousin wins ROY!! Congrats to both of them. Let this be the year we up our quota of players from Puerto Rico.

Billy Beane is about to do it again--beat everyone else to the first major deal of the post season. Reportedly Matt Holliday and his 1 remaining contract year at $13.5 mil go to the A's for 3 once heralded young players: reliever Hudson Street, lefty OF, Carlos Gonzalez and LSP Greg Smith.

Street was ROY a couple of years ago, but was iffy in 2009. Gonzalez was the D-backs top prospect at the time of the Haren trade (last year's opening blockbuster deal but still needs seasoning. And Smith too slipped some in '09. Beane said a few days ago that he had some budget for a change having moved 5 established last year, including Haren, Harden, Swisher and Blanton.

But there must be a long term deal in the works for the Boras client, Holliday. Even a trader like Beane wouldn't trade for a sizeable contract like Hollidays and then lose him in 2110 for two top draft picks--would he?

Matt...he murdered us...put up his highest numbers against us versus any other team...

1/3 of his total homeruns for the season (24) were against the Cubs (8).

He had 16 RBI against the Cubs (84 for the season)

He hit .333 against us with 18 hits....12 runs and 4 doubles all highs versus any individual team....

Yeah, he wouldnt have even been in the ROY running if it werent for GEO's pitching staff!! lol

Geovanny!!! Family represents!!!Well deserved indeed.

Winter Baseball just underway in P.R. by the way. I'll keep you informed. Geo will play with The Carolina Giants [which I hate] and this year is special because an interleague bonus is set with the Dominican league teams coming to town. It is pretty neat and also at the end The baseball World Cup due up next. Tickets for the games are 4 dollars and beer is $2 LOL!!!
Hey by the way big party here for Soto and Yadier.

Question Neil... Does everybody see the same publicity on the right and left sides of the CCO page or does it vary from the state or zone the reader is at? just curious...

Agustin, it varies based on location for the most part. I am working on adding ads such as Amazon that is more Cubs related that I can control. Those ads will probably be somewhere on the Community Blog.

Thanks Neil.
Hey I love that on this CCO new version I'm allways logged in and just have to type the post! Hey let me know if a CCO reunion is going to be set ok?!

Thank you and I am glad you like the new design. Still a lot of work to do, but it is at least working properly right now...and I will.

Neil:

In regards to the ads....

Try to get some those Victoria Secret models instead of some dork with e.d.
No running game yesterday and you guys still won!

Way to go Geo!! All baseball fans and non-fans at Puerto Rico hae something to celebrate tonight. Very well deserved!!
