Shopping on Black Friday?

Baseball's off-season has been rather quiet to this point. A deal here and there but clearly more rumors on what could happen than actual activity. The report from Yahoo Sports by Tim Brown indicated the Cubs and Padres might have found the third team they have been looking for to help complete the deal for Jake Peavy. Other than Peavy, the Cubs are rumored to be interested in several players, but it is typically the trades or signings that are never mentioned that usually happen.

So while you prepare your list for a full day of shopping and bargain hunting, here's a list of names Jim Hendry is rumored to be interested in adding to the Cubs roster and a few of the players the Cubs might have to part with this winter....

Connected to the Cubs by the Mainstream Media this winter:

  • Bobby Abreu
  • Milton Bradley
  • David DeJesus
  • Adam Dunn
  • Rafael Furcal
  • Brian Giles
  • Jeremy Hermida
  • Raul Ibanez
  • Randy Johnson
  • Jake Peavy
  • Brian Roberts
  • Ben Sheets
  • Mark Teahen

Rumored to be on the Block by the Mainstream Media:

  • Jose Ascanio
  • Welington Castillo
  • Ronny Cedeno
  • Mike Fontenot
  • Rich Hill
  • Sean Marshall
  • Jason Marquis
  • Felix Pie
  • Ryan Theriot
  • Josh Vitters

The Cubs already made two deals this off-season....the re-signing of Ryan Dempster and trading Jose Ceda to Florida for Kevin Gregg. Will the Cubs offer Kerry Wood arbitration on Monday and if so, will he accept? What other moves will Jim Hendry make in the coming weeks....only time will tell.

It's only 79 shopping days left before pitchers and catchers report to Fitch Park.

As my son and whoever called used to say to start a conversation 25 years ago, "What's Up?---Not Much."

This from the Latin Leagues: Are we now seeing the real Pie? He's 12 for 31 and .387 in his last 10 games of Licey and .350 overall in 40 AB's. But he is only .167 vs. lefties.

Jake Fox (a fine Indy lad) is .376 with 13 dbls, 2 HR's and a league leading 27 RBI's in 97 AB's--also with Licey. Josh Kroeger is .328-9-34 in 119 AB's for Caracas. I'm thinking we lose him because he isn't on our 40 man list.

Kroeger, a good OF too, is "Hoffpauir light" at the bat. Kroeger too deserves a good shot with somebody. If Lou doesn't want to play Hoffpauir, I still think that he and Fox could be useful in trades--especially to the AL in the case of Fox.

Unfortunately, Hill and Guzman aren't excelling. I don't think Hill has pitched for a while, and he still stands at 1-2 with a 7.45 ERA. Guzman gave up 8 H in 3 IP on 11/24 and has an ERA of 4.62 in 25 IP.

I'm guessing re. post season deals, that Neil is the only one of us who forgot the critical Buchta trade. (I'm not sure I spelled his name correctly.) I'm also thinking that we are going to be really surprised at several of the names not offered arbitration around the league. Wood may be one of them. I hope that isn't the case. Like Agustin, I too feel Fontenot is a player. I would not worry if he plays regularly and and we see a lot of DeRo in RF.

What the hell has happened to the background at CCO. Why the sudden change? I love it now. I wish your group toys with my group of hippies. I wish the Cubs the best, except when they play my Marlins.

I was disappointed when some people wanted me to shut up about my Florida teams. I was also disappointed when the Rays lost the World Series. I feel it in my eyes and heart that the resigning of Demps was a great deal. I liked him when he was a Marlin and wished we could have signed him. I want to rejoin this site. I always like the Cubs as my 3rd team after Florida and Tampa Bay. Anyways, I hope you are enlightened to the realm of humble abodes.

Peace out to all my hippies!!!

CANDLE!!!!

Woo!!!

FIGHTER!!!

WOO!!!

Matt...thanks for the laugh!

Comparing Candle to Ronnie = Priceless

Candle:

Nothing changed on the site.
You must be tripping on some peyote!!

No prob Neil XD

I remember Agustin talkin about seeing a possible CANDLE/Ronnie meeting.

I envision it would start out like that. That meeting would be priceless.

CANDLE, you're okay in my book, BTW. I ain't makin a joke at your expense. I just think youre a hell of a character.

What about CC Sabathia. Why not try to sign him

Ed, about 140-150 million reasons why. With the pending ownership change and all of the backloaded contracts reportedly there is not a way the Cubs can afford him....besides 6 or 7 year deals for a starting pitcher is too much.

who thinks now after reading that they might of found a third team to deal with to send jake peavy to cubs is going to happan as soon as find right players bacause he wants to come here i have read and both gms have a good relationship and padres want the prospects

i just read that ken griffy jr. has said that he is looking at 9 teams and 3 of witch are in the nl and would sign for cheap bc it would be based on incentives is there a chance that the cubs are in the hunt for jr? he would clearly solve our need for a power lefty bat then maybe since hed sign cheap we can go after that vetran pithcer in the pen (hhhmmmm......WOOD) what yall think

I hope we don't bring Griffey in. DeRo in RF and Fontenot at 2B is better than Griffey in RF and DeRo at 2B. I'd like an upgrade in the OF, but not Griff. and if we got Peavy and another bullpen arm, I could live with our offense as-is.

david, i totaly agree with you on th dero and fontenot thing its just jh is set on the power lefty and if we did he has great pop still but i to would love to see dero in rf and fontenot at 2b full time
