Petrick Outrighted to Triple-A

Vote 0 Votes

According to the transaction wire on Cubs.com, Billy Petrick cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday. Along with Carmen Pignatiello and Casey McGehee, the Cubs have opened three spots on their 40-man roster since the end of the season.

Billy Petrick spent most of 2008 on the disabled list after making his big league debut in 2007.

Neil, I saw that...by my count, without signing any of our own FA's (most likely candidates woul be Wood and Dempster if we signed any of them), we're sitting at 31. So, as it stands, our roster would be this:

    Zambrano

    Harden

    Lilly

    Marquis

    Marshall

    Gaudin

    Hart

    Wuertz

    Cotts

    Guzman

    Samardzija

    Marmol

bench: Fontenot, Hoffpauir, Pie, Cedeno, Koyie Hill

    Soriano-LF

    Theriot-SS

    Lee-1B

    ARAM-3B

    Soto-C

    DeRosa-2B

    Johnson-CF

    Fukudome-RF

That's an awfully right-handed lineup right there. Plus, Fukudome shouldn't even be considered a factor.

Raise your hand if you think that's a winning lineup right there. Maybe one or two of you on here might think that is, but that's what we have to work with right now.

Now, I realize Hart and Wuertz won't be here if Wood and Dempster are re-signed, and in all likelihood, Blanco will come back, so Hill is gone, but the lineup still sucks my ass right now as it stands.

Now, here's an intriguing candidate for you guys...Josh Kroeger, who is leading the winter league right now in all triple crown categories, and has 4 home runs, and best of all, he's left-handed, and was once a top prospect of the D'Backs.

I know you guys might think Lee can't be moved, but I think it'd be the best thing for the lineup AND the team right now. Insert Hoffpauir in there, then you get a power lefty, and keep Kroeger on the bench as a 4th outfielder to replace the spot Hoffpauir would've had on the bench.

Trading Fukudome would also benefit the team, and if we could get Peavy in that oft-proposed trade, then it'd be huge for both teams:

Fukudome, Cedeno, Colvin, Marquis, Pie, Veal, and Hart to the Padres for Peavy and Greene.

Why does it benefit both teams?

Fukudome-they wanted him before, and perhaps a trade to the West Coast closer to Japan would benefit him. Couple that with his great defense in the OF in a big park, and it definitely makes sense, especially if they decline Giles' option

Colvin and Pie-they'll want a speedy CF to cover that ground, and Colvin provides them with a future OF prospect

    Cedeno-offers replacement for Greene

Marquis-groundball pitcher in huge park, and they'll need someone to eat innings and replace Peavy immediately

Hart and Veal-Hart can bring the heat and has pretty good potential, and Veal has good potential. With a big ballpark, both can thrive.

I would then trade Lee to the Giants for either just Matt Cain, or Sanchez and Schierholz.
