A Few Words from the Skipper

The Cubs worked out at Wrigley on Tuesday in preparation for Manny and the Dodgers. Lou Piniella spoke with the media and put the series into perspective. From the Tribune....

"The time for talking is over. The time to get after it on the field and perform starts [Wednesday]. Our club is confident, as I'm sure the Dodgers are. And we're going to play as well as we can, as hard as we can for as long as we can. And that's it. We know what everybody in this city wants, and we're going to try and give it to them."

And another look at the celebration following the division title with Eddie Vedder as the background music....

That sounds like a good plan.

By the way, does anybody know the ESPN radio affiliate in Nashville? Is it 106.7.

  • jerljr

Well, I think we are going to a sports bar that some of our friends go to. I'm leaving it up to her. wink-wink. Thats where she wants to go because drinks are free if its your birthday. Which I don't understand her think since I pay for her drinks anyway so they're free every night. But I not going to argue with her.

    I got my fingers crossed.

    I love the discription JimK!

Awaiting game one, I have this sense of a NASA to space station liftoff. The personnel and payload are in place, hopes and prayers are at their fervent peaks, the cameras are rolling, the countdown is proceding....10, 9, 8....there is evidence of the rockets firing....7, 6, 5,....and we are all watching with fingers crossed from our spectator positions....4, 3, 2, 1. We have liftoff!!!!

The post season journey into the statoshpere of sports for Chicago's Blue begins with pitch one from Dempster to Soto. The journey lasts as long as the Cubs spaceship executes its maneuvers better than the 7 other spaceships also leaving launching pads at this time. May your talents, laudable efforts and the baseball gods make your journey a spectacular success for the world to behold, TEAM CUBS!

    Keys for tonights game:

1 - be patient early on. Make Lowe prove his "sinker" is working consistently. If we can get 3 walks the first 2 innings, we can deflate the confidence he's been carrying around for the last month. (unbeaten since 8/23 1.23 ERA over that span)

2 - the bottom of the order. We've got to get the 6 - 9 hitters on base w/ some frequency. Soriano will show this series, let's not allow solo HR's when it could have been a 2 or 3 run shot.

3 - moving over runners. This plays into my walk key. Guys like Lee, Fuk, and Edmonds have got to move along the runners. I doubt that we'll blow the Dodgers out at any game this series, so let's put a solid NL style of ball together.

    and lastly....

4 - DO NOT allow Manny Ramirez to beat us. I don't care if we walk him every time he's up under any situation... for guys like Kemp, Blake et al to beat us...just not Manny. His postseason record speaks for itself, he's won series for the BoSox on his own practically, DO NOT allow that to happen here. On the plus side, I'm not sure the last time (if ever) he's played in Wrigley so maybe that will help us..

    I'm out...& GO CUBS!
