Murton to be Recalled

Vote 0 Votes

According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs will recall Matt Murton before Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay Rays and Eric Patterson will likely by the odd man out and optioned down to Triple-A Iowa.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting as of Monday night that Murton received notification on Sunday that he would be recalled and join the team in Tampa.

Will update when the roster moves become official or when more information becomes available….

Matt's also a defensive liability. I really love the Johnson, Edmonds and Fdome outfield. Give Hoffpauer his bats as well between some minor insertion in LF and 1B. We've seen the value of great outfield defense....no way would I compromise that.

Murton is a good hitter... but really has 0 power

1 HR in 176 at bats at AAA this year

I don't understand why we can't just let Micah have the job, until Soriano comes back. He's a big strong kid, and if Lou were to sit him down and say, "Son, I'm not going to sugar coat this, we need you to step up and be our everyday LF until Sori is back, so go get 'em" I think he would respond accordingly.

I personally believe Murton is being brought up to increase his trade value, period. As Jim (TP) says, average, average, average. And NO SPEED.

I hope he gets traded well before the deadline, for his sake and ours.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Not good.

Average defender, no power & no speed Maybe, a single but mostly ground outs off his bat.

We must be facing a bunch of leftys.

  • Joe S (San Diego)

Thos move was made because Lou wanted another RH bat on the team. He was actually considering using Soto as the DH in game 1 vs Tampa and Blanco as the C. I hope this move stops that!

One thing is certain is that Murton can hit vs LH pitching. He did so while with the Cubs and was doing it at Iowa. I think he has decent power, but even doubles from him are good. If he's hitting thats all that matters.

I agree with Jim that I would like to see a platoon of Hoffpauir and Murton in LF much like the old platoon of Dwight Smith and Lloyd Mclendon!....

  • Matt Haggard

    Single, single, single...

Wouldnt that make a decent leadoff guy?

    In 2006 he hit 13 HR's in 400+ ABs.

Thats serviceable. He doesnt need pop if he he is hitting in front of Fukuome, Lee, and Ramirez. Right?

    Jim....Pie has been showing improvement.

    Last 10 games, 11-for-36 with 3 doubles, a home run, 5 runs scored, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts (.306/.333)

Second game of the double header against the Nashville Sounds on Monday....3-for-4 with a double, a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's.

  • Jim

I would like to see a platoon of Murton and Hoffpauir in Left, with a hint of Reed Johnson.

    How has Pie been doing?

  • Austin

Murton = single, after single after single. It's cool for awhile, but it would be nice if he had some pop and base running skills. I doubt he'll be an overall better option that Patterson. At least he has some wheels and is versatile. Interesting move.

  • Matt Haggard

    Awesome!

This is Matt Murton's one big shot!

I hope he makes the best of it!
