Updated - 10:47am C.T. - Micah Hoffpauir Recalled - Eric Patterson in Chicago

According to a report in the Sun-Times, Micah Hoffpauir was recalled as expected to take Alfonso Soriano's spot on the active roster. The Sun-Times also reported the Cubs will activate Eric Patterson when Lou Piniella reduces his pitching staff from 13 to 12 before Interleague play begins on Friday.

Updated - 11:27am C.T. - Eric Patterson Recalled - Kevin Hart Optioned

According to a report in the Sun-Times, the Cubs activated Eric Patterson and he will be available for today's game against the Braves. Kevin Hart was optioned back to Triple-A.

The Cubs will go for the series sweep of the Braves and their 11th straight at home behind Carlos Zambrano, but without Alfonso Soriano. Ryan Theriot is expected to be inserted into the leadoff spot and reports suggested on Wednesday night that Micah Hoffpauir would be recalled to take Soriano's spot on the roster. Kosuke Fukudome should find his way to the 2-hole in the lineup. Piniella announced before Wednesday's game that his right fielder would hit in that spot during Interleague play.

The Cubs and Braves will play the first ever throwback game today at Wrigley. The Cubs will don replica uniforms from 1948 while the Braves will be the Boston Braves for a day. The game will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Cubs' games being telecasted on WGN.

Carlos Zambrano is coming off his second loss of the season after the Cubs defense opened the door for the huge 7th inning in Los Angeles. Zambrano gave up a season high 7 runs and tied a career high by allowing 13 hits. Big Z promised he would get back on track in his next start. Zambrano was not happy with the location of several of his pitches, notably one to Russell Martin and the other to Matt Kemp. Zambrano deserved a better result but could not remain in control of himself while he was on the mound....or after.

Zambrano was not sharp against the Padres and coupled with his start against the Dodgers, Piniella needs a good outing out of Zambrano today.

The Cubs are in position to sweep the Braves and with a long road trip ahead, Zambrano could give the bullpen more time off. Zambrano must step up and give his team a good outing today and quiet the concerns of the team being without one of the big three....for at least one day. Big Z is 4-0 in 8 starts at Wrigley this year with a 2.38 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.

Zambrano is 2-2 in 9 career starts against the Braves with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

  • Jeff Francoeur - 2-for-11 with a double and a home run
  • Tim Hudson - 0-for-5
  • Kelly Johnson - 3-for-10 with 2 doubles
  • Chipper Jones - 5-for-19 with a double, a home run and 4 walks
  • Greg Norton - 2-for-6 with a double

The Cubs will face a familiar face in Tim Hudson. Hudson hit Alfonso Soriano in Atlanta after Soriano hit 3 home runs the night before....but he will not have the opportunity to "brush" Soriano off the plate today.

With all of the injuries to the Braves' pitching staff, Hudson has become the number one starter for Bobby Cox. Hudson has been very solid for the Braves this year....and has never lost to the Cubs.

Hudson has not posted a win since May 22nd, to no fault of his own. Hudson has allowed only 6 earned runs on 23 hits in his last 3 starts (21 2/3 innings) with 12 strikeouts and 8 walks. Hudson is 2-3 in 7 road starts this season with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.14 WHIIP.

Look for Piniella to load his lineup with lefties today. Hudson has not allowed a home run to a right hander this season and left handers are hitting .255 with 18 walks, 23 strikeouts and 7 home runs while righties are hitting .225 with 5 walks, 31 strikeouts and 0 home runs.

Hudson is 2-0 with a complete game in 4 starts against the Cubs with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.

  • Mark DeRosa - 1-for-1
  • Jim Edmonds - 8-for-18 with a double, a home run and 5 walks
  • Derrek Lee - 4-for-10 with a home run
  • Aramis Ramirez - 4-for-13 with a double
  • Ryan Theriot - 0-for-3

Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

  • Brady

Cubs up 3 1/2. Reds win!

    Love that Dusty!

  • Brady

Reds just scored 4 on the Cards in the 7th and are now up 6-2. Hopefully they can hang on, and our Cubs will be up 3 1/2. Sidenote, Corey Patterson is batting .180, and is taking quite a bit of heat from the Red announcers for his early count swings. The kid still doesn't learn.

  • agustin rexach

I go to mlb.com like twice a day just to check our best in the mayors record and make sure its still there! At this point in the season what else could you ask for?

I would have never, ever, dreamed that this team could become an OBP machine with all the free swingers we had last year and that are still here...That is how much credit I give to Fukudome and the fukuway! Keep Rollin'

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    just got home....

    NATION REPRESENT!

    CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!

  • Barry

    GO CUBS GOOOO

    GO CUBS GOOOO

    HEY CHICAGO WHADYA SAY

THE CUBS ARE GOING TO WIN THIS GAME!!!

    43-24!!!

  • Joe S (San Diego)

LOVE IT!!!!!! I think Jack and Harry had it under control....a meaningful homerun in the bottom of the 9th for a Hey Hey call...and a crazy HBP to get a Cubs Win! Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

This is truly a season to remember so far!!! I feel like we are in for a great road trip to Toronto and Tampa Bay....

  • Neil

CUBS WIN ON A HIT BY PITCH!!!!

  • Matt Haggard

    How anti-climatic...

    Haha!

    Go Cubs.

  • Drew

Walk off hit by pitch...most exciting play in baseball!

  • Neil

    EDMONDS!!!!

  • Matt Haggard

    HOLLY-WOOD!

  • baron

    EDMONDS!!! wow

  • Drew

You think Ohman can blow one in Wrigley for old time's sake?

  • Jennifer Marie Rexach

    ...and he becomes a CUBBIE!!!

    Welcome EDMONDS!!!

  • Drew

That's the same Jim Edmonds I've hated my whole life!

  • Lows

    YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAA!!!!

  • nick

    Why did Marmol come out?

  • Neil

What a great job by Eyre and Marmol in the 8th....

Yes Gregg, Infante is an ex-Cub, technically.

  • Matt Haggard

Omar was a cub for all of 3 days or something like that this winter.

  • Gregg

I wonder why Z was allowed to bat as well.

Question: Is Omar Infante an ex Cub?

  • JimK

I'm back just in time to see that one score prediction is posted (2-1)--and to see Joe S pick on 87 year old Cubs' Legend, Andy Pafko. I'm hoping the Cubs catch a couple of breaks and that Joe S and friends will give me and Gramps the benefit of the doubt if we take too long at the Wrigley urinals. We may be doing the best we can. Otherwise, Joe, people our age are going to spend your age group's inheritances.

  • Drew

Drew questions why we let Big Z hit then pulled him after one batter in the next inning...Drew knows Big Z is a good hitter but would've preferred Micah batting.

  • Joe S (San Diego)

Are you kidding me??? A cheat sheet for the 7th inning stretch?? Do they need to pull Pafko's string to make him talk in the booth with Len and Bob??

    LETS GET SOME RUNS!!

  • Hubert

Is the wind blowing in? Cuz according to gameday it looked like D-Lee hit it pretty well..

  • baron

Hudsons thrown 45 of his 73 pitches for strikes....

yet we have 0 BB to show for it. He walked 4 guys in his last outing...

How about some patience and manufacturing...

  • nick

Nick ask if we can change our uni's so maybe we start to hit.

  • bardo

Bardo say's"how do the old uniforms look"

He also say's"the radio broadcast has a bad case of st st studdering.

  • Neil

Neil says Let's Go Offense, Let's Go!!!!

  • JimK

Not much time today. Checked in to see that Hoffpauir isn't playing. We don't need another speedy, table setter so EPat could be Lou's "showcase" today. (The DP he grounded into just now doesn't help. We missed Soriano's pop here.)

This came at a quick glance looks like a 2-1 or 3-2 game. I hope it's the latter. Welcome home, Barry, and thanks for your service!

  • baron

    D. Lee needs to step up...

He has hit .234 and .206 in May and June respectively..

  • Matt Haggard

Matt's sorry he got to the game late.

    Matt'll remind ya'll next time.

    Come on CUbs! Cool unis.

  • nick

    Wow Patterson was safe.

  • Disregard my previous message now that the "real" broadcast is back. I should have just said "serenity now" a few times.

  • Dave in STL

Anyone care to guess how much time "Jimmie Ballgame" has bought himself with his performances over the last week? I was guessing he'd be gone by the 4th of July series in STL, but now I'm guessing he's passed that time....

  • Does anyone know how long we have to put up with this crap? This is the stupidest broadcast I've ever seen. Technological advances are called "advances" for a reason. This sucks. Give me color and real camera angles, WGN.

    Anyway, GO CUBS!

  • nick

Nick thinks after Big Z throws a no-no today, he is going to want to wear these uni's all of the time.

  • nick

Nick is loving the black and white telecast and throw back uni's. Let's keep it going today.

  • Skijackz

I'm happy (more than happy) to have Hoffpauir up but I'm scratching my head about Patterson. Why not Murton and showcase him as trade bait? Or is Patterson trade bait as well since we have a glut of middle infielders? Does Sweet Lou/JM have an issue with Murton? I know his defense is suspect but he is .290-.360 hitter.

Also, I'm with Neil. Unless Hoffpauir was doubtful on getting the park on time with Patterson already in Chicago, he should be in left.

  • Neil

    Forgot....

Neil is very interested as to why Hoffpauir is not in left today.

  • Jimbo

While Ive been critical of Sori's periodic lack of plate discipline, it sucks to have him out for 6 weeks. However, this is the chance for Patterson to show he is truly a big leaguer. My only fear is that when Sori does return, he will be a bit over-anxious, and start swinging like a madman again.

  • agustin rexach

Hey guys...Hello there Barry, hope everything is going well.

JimK/Nick good points on Hoff and Theriot.

  • Barry

Gregg, I can see your point with DeRo so, good call there. I do want DeRo in as much as possible.

JimK good to see you as well my friend. I returned three months or so ago. Since my return I actually was able to see the CUBS Rockies game where we were down 8-0 and 9-1 and won with DeRo's HR!! Man that was a helluva game!!! I then went on a fishing trip in Wisconsin and got shut out!!

Anyway, great point on Hoffpauir and his LH bat. He has been good but geeez Louise we all of a sudden seem to have too much talent and I would just hate to see us screw the season by never really establishing a common everyday roster.

I think there is good reason to be concerned about maintaining a common rotation with 25 players to include another SP after the All Star Break. "Z", Dempster, C.C., and Lilly make a helluva starting four!! Couple that with our offense........ **Shaking my Head** AWESOME!!

Last comment: I heard a CUBS Executive this morning on Mike and Mioke and he made a great point. This offensive breakout is not necessarily a breakout as last year we sported the best record in Baseball after the ASB! That leads me to believe our MOST PRESSING issue is Starting Pitching. C.C. or Wolf would be fine additions on our drive to to the WS!!!

    GO CUBBIES!!!

  • nick

CPatt leading off. I am glad to see Theriot staying in the two hole. He has done very good there.

  • Neil

    Today's lineup:

    Patterson - LF

    Theriot - SS

    Lee - 1B

    Ramirez - 3B

    Fukudome - RF

    Soto - C

    Edmonds - CF

    DeRosa - 2B

    Zambrano - P

  • JimK

Barry...First it's good to see your post. Are you still in Iraq? I've worried about you. The biggest reason Lou is playing Hoffpauir is to see if Hoffpauir can be a productive lefty bat for the Cubs. Cedeno could be consistently good, but he has had performance ups and downs. Hoffpauir has not disappointed in his (few) opportunities, and he has only been limited by injuries and finding an available position.

  • nick

Johnson is doing very good, but part of the reason he could be doing so well is because he is in a platoon role. And yea, where is DeRo going to go. I think Theriot needs to stay put, let's not mess with what he has going right now.

  • Gregg

Barry, you want to bench DeRosa who is batting over .300 with OBP around .400 and good run production?

  • Barry

Gentlemen help me to understand why we do not put Cedeno at short move Theriot to 2nd and Reed Johnson at LF? Cedeno was knocking the cover off the ball when we recalled him and since then he has been a cheerleader! I am going to be so bold as to say he is our SS of the future. Get him in now while we have this nice cushion and if he does really well then leave him there and if he only does good then relegate it to a showcasing for a potential trade for a quality pitcher after the All Star Break.

I am happy Jim Edmonds is producing

  • SteveF

I'm fine with the call-ups of Hoff and Patterson. The lefty bats provide attractive options. However I have a concern regarding the excess of 2nd basemen. DeRosa, Font, Cedeno, and Patterson is a bit much.

The next 6-weeks will indeed be an opportunity to showcase trade bait. While no one wishes an injury on a player, this situation can be maximiized for this purpose.

Left out in all of this is Murton. I think his poor defense hurts him more than lack of power, but the combination of these shortcomings leave him with only one really good career option; I have maintained that once he gets his head around it, he should focus on becoming a premier pinch hitter if he wants a major league career.

  • Drew

    Just thinking outloud:

    Theriot SS

    Fukudome RF

    Lee 1B

    Ramirez 3B

    Hoffpauir LF

    Soto C

    Edmonds CF

    DeRosa 2B

That still is a pretty darn good lineup with a good righty/lefty breakup. In that order our No. 8 hitter is batting .313. I think we have more than enough depth and talent to survive without Soriano my only concern is that I hope losing him doesn't have a mental effect on the players. I don't think it should but losing one of your best players can be disheartening.
