In the Center of the Rumors

Vote 0 Votes

Several reports on Tuesday night indicated once Jim Edmonds clears waivers on Wednesday he will sign with the Cubs. Felix Pie appears to be the odd man out and will likely be sent down to Iowa to continue to work on his swing. Reports also indicated that Reed Johnson and Edmonds be platooned in center while Pie patrols the outfields of the Pacific Coast League.

If Edmonds is signed, could Pie be traded instead of optioned back down to Iowa?

According to a report in the San Diego Union Tribune Tuesday night (hat tip to Matt Haggard) if Edmonds signs with the Cubs they will have "a surplus of outfielders -- two of whom the Padres have shown interest in before, Felix Pie and Matt Murton."

Rumors surfaced over the winter the Padres were interested in Matt Murton, Kevin Towers (the Padres' GM) mentioned Murton's name himself on several occasions. And rumors of a possible trade of Felix Pie to the Padres for Kahlil Greene have been floating around for the last few weeks. The San Diego Union Tribune mentioned Kevin Towers was (or still is) in Chicago. According to the report the Cubs "could be asking for Kahlil Greene in exchange for Pie -- probably a deal-breaker."

Trading Felix Pie should not be in option if they take a flier on Jim Edmonds. Pie in Iowa as an insurance policy is better than Pie in a Padres' uniform.

As mentioned for the last two days, the Jim Edmonds debate should be over one way or another on Wednesday. He will either be Carlos Zambrano's newest teammate or not.

Stay Tuned....Will Post a 'From the Wire' report as soon as the news surfaces on where Jim Edmonds officially landed.

Too bad we didn't get Greene,(Spicoli), before tonight!

Break out your lip gloss, frosty tips, and eye liner....here comes Edmonds! How fitting that Simon LeBon sang the 7th inning stretch!

Yeah, Edmonds and frosty tips...now all we need is Scott Padsendik. Man, what's with the CF? And Simon LeBon tonight? Like I said....BOYS TOWN!!!

HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF
HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF

Bad news to start the day. It will be worse news when/if we sign him. I truly hope this is a Roberts-type rumor mill.

I don't know if I'd trade for Khalil Greene...

Hes a free swinging guy with a career .309 OBP, no base-stealing potential and only 15-20 HR type power....

I can't believe I'd say this, but I'd much rather have the Riot and Fontenot than Greene. They make up for a lack of natural ability with great hustle and determination....

Giving away Pie for Edmonds and Greene is an awful idea. What since we have one of the best records in the LEAGUE we should mess with this chemistry. WE NEED PITCHING GOD DAMMIT. We do not need another bat what we need is another SP. That is what is missing.

Z
Demp
Lilly
?
?
Gallagher, Marshall, Hart, Hill and maybe Veal. Is what we have to fill the 4th and 5th spots. Lieber and Marquis are not options anymore.

And after watching Fukudome these first 39 games, he should be the leadoff man.

Fukudome
theriot
Lee
Soriano
Aram
Soto
Pie/johnson
Derosa/Cedeno
that is what i would go with.

Like Edmonds, I don't think Greene is a plus for us either. Baron explains why. Short or second, in addition to CF would be the places to consider adding a good left handed bat with some power, but we have found ourselves + middle infielders in Theriot, Cedeno and DeRosa who are playing well together. It appears that San Diego would require a lot more than Pie for Greene, and I hope we save Greene's $5 mil salary for a more useful deal.

I may be alone in thinking that the "frosty tips" commentaries are demeaning the CCO site. At least the fact that Edmonds has a son, two daughters and earlier this year moved his girl friend into a condo that replaced his home in St. Louis is some indication that he doesn't disdain women.

We had a recent "sandbox level" exchange on this site that several others found disgusting. The current discussion seems similar to me and falls short of keeping the CCO "Classy".

Lighten up man you should be more worried about the dude above you taking the Lord's name in vain. Does he frost his hair? Yes!

I think cory should consider measuring
his thoughts before he puts them into words...
I mean, this is a site for the faithful not for
personal attacks....especially if you can't take
the heat. Try to make your point, without
insulting the people who do not think like you
and you will obligate yourself to think...

Sorry for the rant cco

JimK - Very well said. And thank you.

i am really starting to see the pattern here. all the people who dont want edmonds keep talking about his sexual orientation and not his upside to the team or lack of a downside. who cares if we sign him and it doesnt work out. it is a low risk high reward investment. it also seems that a lot of you edmonds haters are pie and murton lovers. with all the non deserving love pie and murton get from some of you on this site, you should be more concerned with your sexual orientation because there is absolutely no supportive baseball reason to love those guys. gets me thinking if sox fans are right and wrigley field is really the biggest gay bar in chicago.

"Dammit" is sufficient to emphasize the point that we likely need a stud pitcher more than anything else. If I were JH I would count on one of the candidates named by Jim for the five spot and trade for a legitimate 2-3 guy. As mentioned yesterday, the standout performances by several of our guys at Iowa along with one of Cedeno or Theriot and EPat or Fontenot should make a top pitcher obtainable. If JH has budget room, Lowe, Burnett, Bedard and even Halladay come to mind. Less costly/younger guys (near term) that might be pried away include Sanchez or even Cain of the Giants, Hughes of the Yankees and Marcum of the Jays.

This is my last comment today. Jeremy...You tried for the high ground, and you fell into the swamp. The baseball merits however great or small of Edmonds, Pie and Murton and the esteem or lack thereof expressed by memmbers of the Faithful about these players have nothing to do with either the players sexual orientation or the sexual orientation of members of the Faithful. It has everything to do with whether these players can be plus performers on the field get the Cubs to the post season.

JimK I agree but the reasoning behind my comment was due to the ignorant people on here who make those comments you talked about.

Anyways, I still don't want edmonds because I think that Pie can do a better job than edmonds this point in his career.

Edmonds has been on the decline since 04. He was a great Cf. WAS. Hasn't hit over .263 since 04. # of games have been declining since 04. OBP has benn on the decline since 04 as well as HR's, doubles, hits, R.B.I.'s. Other than that I can see why Hendry must want him.

Jim Hendry go after another pitcher.

JimK,
Then why does everyone's analysis of edmonds include a comment about how he styles his hair? Funny... i didn't know hairstyles translates to a postseason berth. I am by no means making accusations about the sexual orientation of the "Faithful" as you like to call them. All I am saying is that almost every legitimate argument so far has included something about Edmond's hairstyle. Let's look at the facts. Everyone has been saying that he is a bad teammate. I counter this with the fact that he was let go by the St. Louis Cardinals for some prospect and was picked up by the San Diego Padres as a last resort because he was all that was left. Hmm...i think i would be a little bitter in that situation. I feel that his calf injury was hurting him more than he let on and that is one of the reasons for his slow start this season. Listen I'm not going to sit here and lie to myself and say that edmonds is the answer to our world series woes. However, I'm not going to sit here and lie to myself and say that pie and murton are the answers to our world series woes. We can give edmonds a try and not worry about him not performing to our expectations. By the way, to the people who suggested Lofton over Edmonds. Are you nuts? You want to talk about a clubhouse cancer? There is a reason this guy doesn't and hasn't lasted very long on teams.

just because we sign edmonds doesn't mean we are giving up on pie. we are not trading him. dont worry, he will be in AAA destroying the pitching down there waiting to come back up and suck again. and it also doesn't mean that our moves before the the all star break have come to a close. edmonds is not filling a rotation spot when we get him. why is everyone treating edmonds like a period at the end of a sentence.

Hey, lighten up......we're just kidding. It's our right to kid around. I could sit here all day and critic everyone's comments, but I have more important things to do in my life. Opinions are opinions and somtimes a little laughter isn't bad...MAN! Cory, you get what I am saying, stay cool! Peace, I'm out!

Pie was given a chance AGAIN, this season and he has not taken advantage of it AGAIN. He still maybe become a good player but he is not going to be the player for this season. This is not the season to let him get his feet wet(which he has had several chances to do so) Russ has done a respectable job. I have been pleased with his performance but it could be approved.
The signing of Edmonds allows Fuko to be moved to the second spot which means that we will have two guys with speed at the top of the lineup. Plus, Fuko can make up for some of the less "lead-off" capabilities of Soriano (OBP, strikeouts) Edmonds may end up being a bust(and if he is he will be out of here as quick as he came) but if he finds a little of his old talent and can produce, it could end up being a excellent move.

I agree that we need starting pitching but your just not going to find that at this point. Not many teams are going to salary dump this early in the season. We just got to hold out till the trade deadline. When, I gaurentee that any trade of any count will include Pie. He will be gone by July.

It's getting hard to breathe in here with all those who want "political correctness" and those who are "easily offended". I think it is pretty obvious Cory was kidding around. If you're gay or no someone who is gay, that's fine, whatever, but you make it a bigger deal than the person making the joke. Then everyone gets jumpy and lame. Heck, people are still talking about Ryan and me going at it the other night and I wasn't even upset, I just thought it was funny. From now on I think we should as a group try not to comment too negatively on other people's posts, and I'll be the first to start that trend. Another thing we should definitely stop doing is lineups...seriously...We all have variations but they aren't going to matter. Lou has a pretty good grasp on this team and baseball in general so I'm not going to second guess it.

user-pic

Well, you said that Edmonds low risk investment, so was Mark Prior if they had signed him and now we are crying that we need more pitching, so that did not exactly work out.

Keep in mind, I do have a prejustice against him because he was a Cardinal. And I have to admit I dont like the guy either. But, I'm going to give him a chance. But, He needs to be on his best behavior because if he's not, he could become the most hated cub in history.

user-pic

Ronald...are you saying that had we signed Prior, we wouldn't have any pitching complaints? Have you even kept track of baseball news? Prior hurt himself throwing in March, started the season off on the 60 day DL, and just had another setback recently guaranteeing that he most likely will not pitch this year. So how exactly would that have done anything? No, cutting the strings on Prior was the smartest thing we have ever done ever.

And Jerl, as much as I hate Edmonds as a person, from all acounts he will have to try really hard at being hated to even match the clubhouse cancer that was Phil Nevin.

I got a answer to your post Jeremy.
" why is everyone treating edmonds like a period at the end of a sentence?"

Because he was a Cardinal. And respectively, because he is definitely at the end of his career.

He's not going to hit .350 and hit 40 hrs like everybody expects every player on the team to do.
But if he gives us a .280 average and 20-25 hr or get some key hits in key times, I would be happy. Getting key hits in key times is big. Look at Fuko's numbers. .315 average and 2 hrs. Thats not that spectacular but would you take him off the team right now. Hell no.

We would want Edmonds to be a role player not a savior.

Besides, Cardinals take the guys that we get rid of all the time why not get some of thiers for once.

user-pic

I would prefer a little bit of political correctness. No need to be spiteful.

I find it funny that people are makin fun of edmonds hair as well. Its a but two faced...

Has anyone see Geo's hair?

Man! Thats one smoothe 'do'.

And we dont make fun of him, haha.

Good Lord i'm sorry I offended some of you. There apparently is no room for humor. I listed several reasons why I don't want Edmonds and it's clear by the bazillion posts about it that it's a stalemate so some of us were joking around big deal. Who am I attacking personally? I can't take the heat? What the hell are you talking about?

I dig this site and try to contribute what I can living here in Des Moines and going to a lot of I-Cub's games. I think some of you are a tad sensitive and like Mark said everyone could sit around and critisize everyone else's posts but that's lame.

Not everyone has the same opinions and not everyone's gonna get along. I notice there's a group of you that gang up on people like Mark and I. You want to think your above us go ahead, why don't we agree to disagree and lets all just root for the Cubs.

Hey Cory, if you get to a alot of ICubs games have you seen Hill since his demotion? Wondering how he is doing. Looking at #'s only says so much.

user-pic

Im not there live Jim, but the milb.tv gets me a decent view.

From my perspective Hill's not dominating in his first two starts. HOWEVER, he has cut back on the walks, but hes been prone to a lot of base hits in his two starts.

Once he has to pitch with someone on base it starts to unnerve him on the mound.

You seeing the same thing Cory?

ESPN just reported its official...Edmonds to the Cubs

user-pic

You know, while I was arguing against the Edmonds signing with another Cubs fan at our local Jester's, a Red Sox fan, of all people, brought up a good point when he said it's a good thing they weren't like us when their rookie, Dustin Pedroia, went through all this. And that really got me thinking that I should hate the Edmonds deal not because of all the negatives, but because Pie really has nothing to prove back in the minors: we all know he's going to hit the ball well, but he'll be taking his swings at them instead of working on that shortened swing and in the end, THAT will hurt him more. So, actually, I'd be alright not making any moves, having Pie get limited playing time until the work Lou and Perry are doing with him pays off and he gets his swing shortened.

If the Hendry and Lou really wanted a left handed power bat Cfer why not trade for Griffey. The Reds just lost their 2nd SS and have to call up a rookie. They need infielders bad and want to dump griffey's salary. Sounds like a hell of a lot better option than signing a guy that has been on the decline since 04 and has shown all signs that he has reached his limit in the AB's catagory and to top it most Cub fans can't stand the guy.

user-pic

Id kill to have Griffey, but his price tag is too expensive considering what we would be getting.

And I believe Griffey has a player's option for this season.

ANd lastly, Griffey says he would rather play for a team he has previously played for..

That would be the last place Seattle Mariners (makes no sense, eh?)

If there was a way to get Jr. and give up very little, and he WOULDNT pick up his own option, I would be all for it.

"Pie is batting .222, which includes a .286 (10-for-35) clip in his last 15 games after opening the season .143 (4-for-28) in his first 14 games."
Cubs.com

Perfect time to send the Kid down, right as he is starting to figure things out. And he gives you great defense and someone who is lighting on the basepaths.

this next season*

user-pic

Good points Jim.

To be fair Edmonds was hitting .275 early in the month when he was released.

Hes coming, so we need to find some positives. I have a feeling when Pie comes back up he's gonna have a HUGE chip on his shoulder, and he'll become the guy we all hope he'll be.

Matt I hope you are Nostordamus because I have a bad feeling about the whole thing. If he is signed I will back him.

here is what i cannot understand. why would anyone not want to try edmonds. pie had his chance and has not performed. if it was not for johnson i think we would have given some games away. whether we trade pie or keep him is up to jim h but take a chance on edmonds and we have nothing to loose. if it does not work out cut him bring pie up and get after it. there is no downside to signing him. just because he was a card is no excuse.
