Jason Marquis (1-0, 3.86/1.53) vs. Aaron Cook (2-1, 3.12/1.08)
The Cubs will complete their 2-game series this afternoon against the Rockies in their only trip of the year to Denver. The Cubs will face the Rockies again at Wrigley for 4 games at the end of May but today, Jason Marquis will try to win his second game in a row.
Jason Marquis is coming off his first win of the year against the Pirates. He held the Bucs to 1 run on 6 hits in 6 innings....the key to his success was 7 strikeouts and only 1 walk. Marquis turned in his best performance in nearly a year. While Marquis struggled in his first two starts (Astros and Phillies), his team is 3-0 in games he has started.
Marquis is 5-3 in 11 career games, 9 starts, against the Rockies with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. At Coors Field, Marquis is 3-0 in 4 games, 3 starts, with a 2.49 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Last year Marquis posted a 1-0 record in 2 starts with a 2.19 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP....the Rockies his .245 against him.
- Garrett Atkins - 3-for-15 with 2 doubles
- Aaron Cook - 0-for-4
- Brad Hawpe - 8-for-15 with a double and a home run
- Todd Helton - 7-for-24 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs

- Scott Podsednik - 4-for-13 with a double
- Willy Taveras - 9-for-32 with a triple
- Troy Tulowitzki - 1-for-6 with a double
Aaron Cook has been very good in his first 4 starts of the year. After losing his first outing against the Cardinals (4 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts), he has won his last 2 starts while his team has won all 3. Cook beat the Astros in Houston on April 19th....2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits in 7 innings with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk. In 26 innings this season, Cook has walked 8 and struck out 12.
Cook has great career numbers against the Cubs. He is 2-1 in 4 games, 3 starts, with a 2.35 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP....last year, the Cubs beat him in Colorado on August 10th....5 runs, 2 earned, on 8 hits in 6 innings, it was his last start of the regular season. The Cubs get their hits, a .284 batting average, but have trouble plating runs.
- Ronny Cedeno - 1-for-3
- Mark DeRosa - 0-for-4
- Reed Johnson - 1-for-3
- Derrek Lee - 3-for-7 with a double and 4 walks
- Aramis Ramirez - 0-for-4
Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

Let's continue the trend of "plating runs" today against Cook!
Today's lineup:
Fontenot - 2B
Theriot - SS
Lee - 1B
Ramirez - 3B
Fukudome - RF
DeRosa - LF
Soto - C
Pie - CF
Marquis - P
Once again I can't stand Podsednik!
Agreed.
Just in. Would someone give me a scoring update?
Felix Pie drove in our only run with a base hit.
Matt, thank you! You just left the 20,000 comment on the CCO.
I would like to say 'thank you' to everyone who contributes on a daily basis. You guys make the CCO what it is.
Neil thank you for all the hard work that goes into this great site.
Now lets get the offense fired back up today.
All Podsednick (sp?) does is kill the Cubs. Can't the CUBS buy out his contract and send him to Iowa
add me to the anti-Podsednik list...
Nope, thank you Neil. My girlfriend hates this site. Alaways the sign of a good site. Haha
Lots of milestones! 10,000. 20,000. This is a great time to be a Cub fan!
And thanks for the info Nick.
Marquis is pitching like a legit threat. Does anyone know why he pitches so well in Colorado. His stats there are sick?
Cook's pitching a heck of a game for Colorado too. He's getting better as the game goes on. Man, let's hope it stays 1-1 into late innings so the Cubs can clobber their anemic relief staff.
Also, a note mentioned by the announcers. Not since the 1974 San Francisco Giants has a club had the lead in the 8th inning in FOUR consecutive games and lost all four. The Rockies might break that record today.
Late lead-off walks scare me..
What is this humidor Im reading about in Coors Field that keeps Home Run numbers down?
Okay, now it is time for the our offensive explosion.
Well, the eight has been good to us the last few games, so lets see if it will continue today. Lets get a few runs here.
That was the first DP The Riot's hit into all year..
Darn, sharp hit ball.
Come on! Throw us a good inning Kev!
Boneheaded mistake..I wont make excuses for my boy there.
We should be out of this inning..
Come on Riot
Let's just call it a mistake...and that happens. Tough 8th inning for Theriot.
OUCH!
Damn it..
How about some more late inning heroics?
Have faith!
Our big boys are up and theyre bullpen is tired and suspect.
Lets grab it right back.
No give up in the boys.
No give up in the faithful.
LETS GO CUBBIES!
That was the worst at bat Ive ever seen Kosuke have.
It wont happen again.
Theyre will be days like this. We're still on a good streak. Lets go swat the Nats.
4 hits...2 by Pie...go figure. At least the Brewers lost. Can't win em all lets take care of buisness in Washington and then next week the fun REALLY begins!
Cubs have to stop this losing streak at 1!
I almost feel like the Rockies fans would have jumped off the roof of Coor Stadium if they lost their fifth in a row with a lead in the 8th. Too much pain. Now that the Cubbies let them win, they can win the series.
i agree with matt, that was a horrible AB by Kosuke but Fuentes does have a funky delivery, especially for left handed batters.
I missed the train (CCO) today. If it happens again and the Cubs lose, I'll know it's my fault. Matt Haggard....The humidor is a room or a container that has moisture added, and in which the balls are stored. This is done to keep the balls from drying out and carrying even further in Denver's thin air.
As an aside, Jerry Tarkanian, the former UNLV hoops coach was once asked before an NCAA Tourn. game in Denver if the thin air would affect his team. In all seriousness he replied that he didn't think so because the game was being played inside. Hope this bit makes a few Cubs fans smile after the loss.
