According to a report on Friday night from Jeff Zrebiec, discussion between the Cubs and Orioles on the long-rumored deal for Brian Roberts "have cooled". Zrebiec stated the two teams cannot agree on a package that would benefit both teams...."pushing the deal toward Opening Day or beyond."
According to the report in the Baltimore Sun, two sources have indicated the Cubs have offered a package that would include Ronny Cedeno, Sean Gallagher, Donald Veal and one other player, "but the Orioles are holding out for a better offer."
Scouts from both teams are in Arizona and Florida, respectively, looking at players that would be involved in the deal. Zrebiec stated the deal could involve a fifth player and other sources have indicated there have been discussions that have included Jay Payton and Jason Marquis.
Roberts was 2-for-3 on Friday with a RBI and a walk....for the spring, Roberts is hitting .357 with a .471 OBP (5-for-14) with 2 doubles, 3 walks, 5 stolen bases and only 1 strikeout.

Dont let him fleece you like he did Houston Jimmy. Hold on tight. Veal, and Gallagher are the real deals. Anything more than this is stupid. We wont be Houston or Seattle, McFailure.
Just walk away....
wht not try this line up?... if we get b-rob

i dont know i was thinking about it today tel me what you think
I'm angry with our overall performance in ST and with the Roberts saga. We have 9 or 10 games in the next 8 days, and it's past time for a lot of young guys to show evidence of skills that work in the bigs. B.A.'s like Cedeno (.200), Patterson (.214), Colvin, (.083), Pie (.238) and Fuld (.182) suck as do ERA's of "would be" pitchers like Gallagher (9.00), Ascaino (9.00), and Cotts (16.87).
It's unimpressive performances by some of these players and the terminal inaction of MacPhail that are screwing up our improvement prospects--either by our counting on a few of these guys by trading others or doing both.
If the Roberts deal doesn't happen by next Saturday, and Pie isn't impressive during the same time frame, I look for JH to drop Roberts and add Crisp. Crisp can run and catch it, and he is a table setter. It will be time to get a cohesive group together and quit shadow boxing.
We could still trade three or four guys like Murton, Marquis, Marshall, Petrick, Veal, Fox, and Hoffpauir for guys like lefty pitchers Laffey or Lofgren and Michaels (OF) of the Indians, versatile outfielder Rajai Davis of the Giants and futures like Lars Anderson (1b)and Michael Bowden (rhp)of the Red Sox. We do need to get better to be an elite team (top 4 in the NL), and a couple of modest upgrades/good role players may turn out to be our fate for the start of the season.
JimK,
Getting angry will only exacerbate our situation. PATIENCE CUBS fans, we will in the end get Roberts who we NEEEEED!! I don't want to hear any more crap about we don't need a "slight upgrade?" over Dero%@$*???
Roberts is a four time All Star second baseman!!! Helllooooo!!! He is the quintessetial lead off guy. Top four in Baseball I think I read. Everyone sit back, relax and don't come here for 10 days!! lol When you come back, BR will be in CUB Blue!!
Breathe everyone, breathe..........
All of my CUB brethern have see what BR is doing in ST, right???
I'd bet on the Cubs forcing the issue. Maybe they're pulling their cards from the table now, but Roberts would be so valuable to them, filling such an essential hole, that they might well end up overpaying.
I think we are over-valuing Coco Crisp. Since he broke his wrist at the beginning of the 2006 season he has posted batting averages of .264 and .268 with OBP .317 and .330.
Pie struggled last year, but remember he only had 177 AB's. And his minor league stats are so impressive that I think he deserves a lot longer look.
Don't forget Rich Hill's MLB saga...
