Spring Training Game Three: Cubs (1-1) vs. Angels (1-0-1)
Game Time - 2:05pm C.T. Comcast SportsNet - Radio N/A
Location - Tempe Diablo Stadium
Jason Marquis (0-0, -.--) vs. Jered Weaver (0-0, -.--)
Game three of the exhibition season but the first televised game of the spring. Both teams will see a new opponent for the first time since their respective spring schedules began three days ago. Lou Piniella will send Jason Marquis to the hill for likely the first two innings. Both Kerry Wood and Bobby Howry are expected to pitch today but Aramis Ramirez will likely be held out for another day. Several reports indicated Ramirez could be used as the Cubs' designated hitter today but Piniella indicated on Friday night he sees to reason to rush his return. Also, there are conflicting reports on whether Kosuke Fukudome will play against the Angels today or not....a report mentioned Fukudome is on a play two days and take one off schedule.
Mark DeRosa is expected back with the team today after undergoing a successful heart procedure on Thursday. A report in the Daily Herald indicated DeRosa could be back in the lineup a week from today when the Cubs face either the Diamondbacks in Mesa or the A's at Phoenix Municipal Stadium....next Saturday is split squad day for the Cubs.
The following pitchers have not seen action in the first two Spring Training games:
- Tim Lahey
- Jon Lieber - scheduled to start on Monday against the Mariners
- Ted Lilly - scheduled to start on Sunday against the Giants
- Sean Marshall
- Jeff Samardzija - threw a bullpen session on Friday morning
- Michael Wuertz
- Chad Fox
- Geoff Jones
- Kerry Wood - expected to pitch today
- Bobby Howry - expected to pitch today
From the Rumor Mill
A report in the Baltimore Sun on Friday mentioned the Cubs have scouts in Florida looking at Brian Roberts. The Sun said the Orioles are looking at Ronny Cedeno, Sean Gallagher, Jose Ceda and/or Donald Veal and possibly another player. A report in the Chicago Sun-Times on Saturday morning said the Cubs have two scouts watching Brian Roberts and an Orioles scout is in Arizona looking at the Cubs.
Roberts is 3-for-5 in the first 2 games with 2 doubles, a RBI, 3 runs scored and 4 stolen bases.
Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

Well Roberts is doing his part to jack up his price: 3 for 5, 3 runs scored and 4 stolen bases so far in ST. When the scouts are done, my guess is that the O's get Cedeno, Gallagher, Veal or Marshall and Petrick or Ascaino. The Cubs get Roberts and Payton. I hope we can keep Marshall and Petrick.
Agustin is going to have to fill us in on how players throw in the Latin leagues. Rameriz reports that his sore throwing shoulder is the result of his throwing differently in ST then he does in the Dominican--where he did not experience soreness.
Did Ceda lose a lot of weight? I thought last season he was reported to weigh 245. Now he's listed at 205.

Lou's playing the AAA team today I guess.
It's quiet here today. Anyone watching the game?
Our pitchers are hitting a lot of bats, and they are not our AAA guys. K W had 94 mph f.b. and was the victim of some cheap hits--but also a HR. Murton is 3 for 3, and his price is going up. Fox hit a 2 run HR in 6th ? to get us on the board. Angels are an elite AL team, and they are showing it. Lee, Alfonso, Aram did not make the trip.
Fuld called out on strikes top of 8th with bases loaded (0 for 4). Musha also did not make the trip. Hoffpauir is outstanding at 1b and got a solid single in 8th. Soto, best line of the day. After solid 5 or 6 innings and 2 caught stealings (including Figgins) was asked, "Would you rather throw out a base runner of hit a HR? Answered matter of factly, "It would depend on the inning?"
JimK; In the Latin Leagues... every time they finish practice or throw a "throwing session", cheerleaders go directly to whomever is playing 3rd base and hot massage the guy. I guess spring training is tough not to mention road trips.
Comon' lets get ROBERTS please??
I would love Roberts but not for 4 guys. Cedeno, Gallagher and then who??? Roberts will help but not at the cost the O's want. If you look at his #'s compared to Derosa the difference is about 40 SB's and better defence. Is it really worth it??????

Jim...Derosa has nothing to do with the Roberts trade. We need Derosa and Roberts. With our delicate Aramis/DLee/Soriano and good but unproven Theriot/Pie; Derosa's super utility
and dependable roll will be needed in order for us to win. Championship teams need to be deep and we are not so far.
I agree that 4 players is a little too much but we do need his speed and LH OBP. I would give up Cedeno,Sean Gallagher, Murton and Marquis. Even though I think they have enough out fielders...Murton needs a shot at playing every day even if it is somewhere else.
I admit I would be an awful GM because I don't think holding on to our prospects is important and that all I care is to win now. With BRoberts we have a better chance this year and next. I don't know about the future of the prospects and how they will pan out but let me tell you; neither do the experts. I know Soto is untouchable because to me he passed the prospect line and became part of this team and so is Marshall. Gallagher/Cedeno/Ceda and others are just that...a fart aiming at the the moon!?

LETS GO GET ROBERTS SOON PLEASE
GO CUBBIES
The Cubs site has the story--posted about 40 minutes ago. Marquis has mouthed off--saying that there doesn't appear to be a starting spot for him with the Cubs; and, that being the case, he wants to be traded. Lou was surprised to hear that, and said, in effect, "If that's what he said and wants, we will try to give him his wish." Marquis just lowered his value--but it would seem almost a certainty, that he is gone.
It just amazes me how many Cub fans say give them Ceda. Are you people aware of how good this guy is going to be once he gains a little command? Have the Cubs EVER had a prospect go 23 straight innings (and still counting) without giving up a hit? Have they ever had a prospect go 23 innings without giving up a run?? Macfail is not stupid, he wants Ceda because he knows he's gonna be a stud next year, yet the Cub fans just want to throw him in for Robert's. Amazing~!!! I thought we were more intelligent than most fans, but I'm not so sure anymore. Thank God JH is the GM and not many of you.
Agustin, Im with you. We're the Cubs. We have money. We need to spend it wisely, but we're not the Brewers, having to rely on "prospects" because we cant spend. Win now. Definitely.
Wow Carmen Fanzone- are you aware of the ammount of people that you just called dumb or [un-intelligent] in that sentence? Here are some that made your list; Most baseball fans, Cub fans, CCO fans, [me] and you. If your point is that you prefer to stick with Ceda...just say it, DON'T BEAT AROUND George W. Thanks.
Note; I am all for Ceda or anybody that rises up like Soto/Marmol.
