Nothing but the News….and Maybe a Rumor

Only two more days before The Convention…. The Cubs announced their non-roster invitees to Spring Training on Tuesday. All in all the Cubs invited 19 players. Tyler Colvin and Jose Ceda headline the list of players. Along with Ceda, the Cubs invited 6 other pitchers: Chad Fox, Ed Campusano, Geoff Jones, Les Walrond, Mike Smith and Esmailin Caridad. The Cubs signed Caridad in December. He was 1-2 with a 4.02 ERA in 25 games with the Hiroshima Carp last season.

The Cubs invited four catchers: Koyie Hill, Josh Donaldson, J.D. Closser and Welington Castillo. Andres Blanco, Luis Figueroa, Casey McGehee, Bobby Scales and Micah Hoffpauir are the five infielders that received invitations while only two other outfielders, besides Colvin, received invites….Josh Kroeger and Andres Torres.

Here is the rest of the latest including changes to the Peoria Chiefs coaching staff, more from Carlos Marmol’s dominating winter in the Dominican, notes from around the league and of course, the rumor mill.

Carlos Marmol

Carlos Marmol combined on a no-hitter in the Dominican Winter League playoffs on Monday. Marmol closed the game Ervin Santana started. Santana threw 6 innings and struck out 9. Damaso Marte threw 1 2/3 innings and struck out 3 while Marmol threw 1 1/3 innings to earn his second save with 3 strikeouts. Marmol has not allowed an earned run yet this winter….1 hit in 8 1/3 shutout innings with 14 strikeouts, a win and two saves in 7 games.

The Peoria Chiefs

The Cubs and Chiefs announced on Tuesday that former hitting coach Ricardo Media will return as hitting coach next season. Carmelo Martinez was named the Chiefs hitting coach earlier this winter. Martinez was named Cubs Latin American Field Coordinator on Tuesday. Martinez replaced Julio Garcia who took a job in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

The Rumor Mill

Len Kasper was on XM Radio on Tuesday night with Joe Castellano. The two discussed the Brian Roberts trade and Kasper threw in that he has heard “Bedard is still in play.” He did not mention any specifics, so read into it what you want….Orioles fans just want something to happen.

Barry Rozner asked “why not Johan Santana. He thinks the Cubs should go after the leagues best pitcher, no matter the cost.

From Around the League

To say Miguel Tejada had a bad day on Tuesday would be an understatement. Not only did reports surface on Monday night that the Justice Department will investigate Tejada for the interview he gave in 2005 in connection with the Rafael Palmeiro steroids case….his brother was killed in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican.

The Pirates and Adam LaRoche agreed to a 1-year deal on Tuesday worth $5 million dollars and avoided arbitration. LaRoche and the Pirates are working on a long-term deal.

According to a report in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, with Adam Jones allowed to resume playing winter ball, the Mariners might be done with trying to trade for Erik Bedard.

Finally….In another weird twist of fate. Sid Bream joined the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on Tuesday. Bream scored the winning run in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS while a member of the Atlanta Braves. Bream will be a coach with the Pirates Class-A State College farm club.
