On a Mission....at the Winter Meetings

Vote 0 Votes

The Winter Meetings get underway today at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and most of the mainstream media feels this year's gathering will be filled with more trades than in previous years. The weak free agent class and the escalating cost of signing those players will force most teams to deal with one another instead of the agents of those players searching for a new job.

Jim Hendry, Lou Piniella, Randy Bush and company have stated they have laid the groundwork on possible trades and have targeted 4-5 players they could add to the roster while at the meetings this week. Hendry told the Sun-Times on Sunday night, "I can't promise you we're going to leave here with a new right fielder. But I'm sure we'll make a few things happen. I don't know how significant they'll be."

The Chicago Media has mentioned a handful of players that could fit the Cubs needs and possible trading chips they have to offer in return. Here is a look at those players that could be heading to Chicago and the rest from the mill....

Possible Trading Chips....

The Chicago media speculated on Sunday on which players Jim Hendry could move this week, in the right deal. Here is a breakdown by source:

Paul Sullivan, Chicago Tribune

Available:

  • Sean Marshall

  • Eric Patterson

  • Felix Pie (perhaps)

  • Mark Prior

Unlikely to Part with:

  • Rich Hill

  • Sean Gallagher

  • Carlos Marmol

  • Tyler Colvin

  • Mark Prior

Unlikely to Part with:

  • Kevin Hart

  • Jeff Samardzija

  • Tyler Colvin

Available:

  • Ryan Dempster

  • Matt Murton

  • Will Ohman

  • Ronny Cedeno

  • Jason Marquis

  • Sean Marshall

  • Mark Prior

Mark Prior

Mark Prior's days with the Cubs could be numbered. The Padres are very interested and Kevin Towers could make a trade for Prior this week. Paul Sullivan thinks the Cubs could receive "two or three prospects" from San Diego for Prior.

Matt Murton

Jim Hendry told the Sun-Times the Cubs still like Matt Murton but it would be better if Murton was left-handed. Murton's days could be numbered if the Cubs add what they feel is the right piece to the outfield puzzle.

On the Cubs radar....

Kosuke Fukudome

Fukudome is at the top of the Cubs list but he has yet to decide whether he will remain in Japan or play in the Major Leagues. Lou Piniella stated Fukudome could fill the Cubs need for a left-handed bat in right field. Piniella mentioned Fukudome could hit 4th or 5th in the Cubs lineup in a report from Bruce Miles.

Scouts have stated Fukudome would be a good fit in the Majors hitting 2nd in most lineups. Piniella said the Cubs scouts think Fukudome could hit in the middle of the lineup. Bruce Miles mentioned in his report, "The Cubs expect Fukudome to declare any time now whether he's coming to America."

The Cubs could end up overpaying Fukudome in order to keep him from signing with the Padres, Rangers, Giants, Dodgers or the crosstown Southsiders. Chris De Luca thinks there will be a bidding war between the Cubs and White Sox over Fukudome.

According to a report in the Sun-Times on Sunday night, Jim Hendry talked with Fukudome's agent, Joe Urbon of Octagon, recently and the Cubs expect him to make a decision soon. A report from Cubs.com indicated the Cubs will not wait for Fukudome to make up his mind.

Chone Figgins

Paul Sullivan mentioned the Cubs could go after Figgins if the Angels are able to land Miguel Cabrera. The switch-hitting utility player will turn 30 next month (January 22, 1978). Figgins played 99 of his 115 games last season at 3rd base but did play 2nd base and right field. Figgins has played shortstop, centerfield and left field at the Major League level as well. Figgins would give Lou Piniella the flexibility he is looking for, along with speed....Figgins stole 41 bases last season and was caught 12 times.

  • 2006 Stats: .267/.336/.376/.712/9/62/23 doubles/8 triples/52 stolen bases/65 walks and 100 k's in 155 games
  • 2007 Stats: .330/.393/.432/.825/3/58/24 doubles/6 triples/41 stolen bases/51 walks and 81 k's in 115 games
  • Career Stats from Yahoo.com
  • Contract Status: Signed through 2008 - $4.75 million

Carl Crawford

Gordon Wittenmyer said Crawford would be "an ideal target" but he questioned Crawford's availability after the Rays traded Delmon Young to the Twins last week. Bruce Levine said on Saturday that Crawford is "off the market" but a report on ESPN stated the Rays are still listening to offers.

A late report in the Tribune on Sunday night stated Carl Crawford has been taken off the market.

Nick Markakis

The Orioles very talented, young outfielder is probably not available according to Wittenmyer but Markakis would give the Cubs the type of player they need. Andy MacPhail knows the Cubs' farm system and Hendry has made deals with the Orioles before but it took three prospects for Steve Trachsel....how many would it take for an up and coming player like Markakis? The Boston Globe thinks Markakis will be one of the players the Orioles keep on their roster and rebuild around. The left-handed outfielder was the 1st round pick of the Orioles in the 2003 draft....7th overall. Markakis played all three outfield positions in his rookie season of 2006 and played 161 games in right field in 2007.

  • 2006 Stats: .291/.351/.448/.799/16/62/25 doubles/2 triples/43 walks and 72 k's in 147 games
  • 2007 Stats: .300/.362/.485/.826/23/112/43 doubles/3 triples/61 walks and 112 k's in 161 games
  • Career Stats from Yahoo.com
  • Contract Status: 0-3 Auto Renewal Contract, only 2 years of Major League service time

Brian Roberts

Brian Roberts is a fan favorite, as well as a favorite of Peter Angelos. The Orioles were trying to trade Roberts a few years back but Angelos but a stop to the trade talk surrounding Roberts. Roberts is a switch hitter and made only 7 errors in 457 attempts at 2nd base last season. Roberts last played shortstop in 2003 (2 games) and played 51 games at short in 2001. A report in the Boston Globe mentions Roberts will be used to rebuild around as well in Baltimore.

  • 2006 Stats: .286/.347/.410/.757/10/55/34 doubles/3 triples/36 stolen bases/55 walks and 66 k's in 138 games
  • 2007 Stats: .290/.377/.432/.808/12/57/42 doubles/5 triples/50 stolen bases/89 walks and 99 k's in 156 games
  • Career Stats from Yahoo.com
  • Contract Status: Signed through 2009. Roberts will earn $6.3 million in 2008 and $8 million in 2009. Has a limited no trade clause that he can block trades to a certain number of teams a year.

Raul Ibanez

Raul Ibanez is high on the Cubs' list according to a report in the Sun-Times. Ibanez is a left-handed bat with pop and Kosuke Fukudome has been compared to him offensively, but not defensively, and will turn 36 on June 2nd. While Ibanez could help the Cubs at the plate, his defense has been questionable in left field....how would he handle right field at Wrigley? Ibanez has not played double digit games in right field since 2002.

A report on Sunday night in the Sun-Times mentioned the Cubs interest in Ibanez once again.

  • 2006 Stats: .289/.353/.516/.869/33/123/33 doubles/5 triples/65 walks and 115 k's in 159 games
  • 2007 Stats: .291/.351/.480/.831/21/105/35 doubles/5 triples/53 walks and 97 k's in 149 games
  • Career Stats from Yahoo.com
  • Contract Status: Signed through 2008, $5.5 million

From Around the League....

The Padres are nearing a 3-year extension with Jake Peavy according to Ken Rosenthal. The deal would average between $17 million and $17.5 million a year.

The Astros are not done dealing according to Jon Heyman. The Giants and Astros are interested in trading for Miguel Tejada. The Orioles are interested in new acquired Michael Bourn (the Brad Lidge trade with the Phillies), Adam Everett and other propects.

Finally.... As it turns out the Astros paid $2.5 million more for Kaz Matsui than the Cubs rumored $14 million dollar offer. The free agent infielder signed a 3-year, $16.5 million dollar contract with Houston on Sunday....not the $15 million that had been reported.

  • Larry

I was going to say, one guy I would like to see the Cubs go after is Hawpe out of Colorado. It has been said that the Rockies are looking at Ohman. Maybe if we send Ohman, E-Patt, and Marshall to Colorado it might get Hawpe in Cubbie Blue.

  • Larry

From everything I keep reading, Hendry seems more than willing to stand pat until Fukudome makes his decision. Does this bother anyone else? I am not saying that he needs to jump on the next guy that comes available, but he if doesn't come away from the meetings with someone that can play right, I am afraid that we will be stuck with no one.

I think that if we were to get Hamilton and then play him and Murton, that would be a better combination that what we have had in the past year of two.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

I like Hamilton as a 4th OF and only if we could get him cheap.

  • agustin rexach

would you guys consider Hamilton from the Reds as a good idea? They seem to be willing to move him and I'm sure Dusty has 10 guys he would want to have from the Cubs.

Somehow I see him [Dusty] going for Barret so that he can torture us for years to come.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    A few thoughts.....

    * Ibanez is very good hitter but his defense would be suspect in RF. At times, I wish the NL had the DH.

    * I downloaded from Itunes "Go Cubs Go" to my Ipod.

I swear that song jacks me up. Other purchases included Rob Zombie, Lenny Kravitz, The Ramones and

    Depeche Mode.

  • agustin rexach

Yup, Thanks guys. I like Raul Ibanez, he is solid.

  • Neil

O.K. Agustin...here is one for you that will be in tomorrow's update.

Mark Prior for Raul Ibanez. The Seattle paper that mentioned the notion does not feel it is a possibility....but he still mentioned it.

The same report mentioned Ibanez in right field at Wrigley could be a challenge for a guy that has played left field.

    Does that help?

Also, the Cubs are scheduled to meet with Fukudome's agent tonight.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Agustin:

Maybe Hendry is taking a nap right now or sitting in a suana doing a crossword puzzle.

  • Trevor

    LOL..I'm with you agustin...

  • agustin rexach

    I WANT SOME _ _ _ _ _ _ _ CUBS RUMORS NOW!!!

Allllllllll byyyyyy myyyy seeeeeelllf, don't wanna be..... alll;l by yyyyyy myyyy seeeeeeiieellf.

I hope we take atleast two out of three in our next series against the Brewers. I hope Kuroda can give the bullpen a much needed breather.

  • agustin rexach

I do have to add that F.Pie only has 22 years and he has an honest shot at becoming better, I really think he will be good but he is not ready and needs like 2 more years in the minors.

  • agustin rexach

Hey Sam Fuld has less at bats than the Cubs batboy in the mlb team. Clearly he is not being considered for CF for those 6 abs. I am the first one to say that numbers talk, therefore, this kid has earned a shot. He has done a lot better in every offensive category than our beloved Felix Pie. Last I heard he was in the mix to be named MVP of the Arizona Fall League, so do not go crazy killing him just yet. He has proven himself at every level with solid OBP, a .297 Career average, good speed and spectacular defense.

IMO Felix Pie has potential and Sam Fuld has proven stuff. [Sorry to brake this news to all the Pie’s fans…including myself.

  • JimK

Dave in STL is "right on" with Ethier and Hermidia--with Ethier likely more doable. I would add again, Seth Smith of the Rockies. If some don't like Fuld because he is 0 for 6 in the bigs, they should love Smith. He made the Rockies playoff and series roster and was 4 for 7 in high pressure situations. In defense of the vertically challenged, the coming-on-strong Fuld is 5-10 and 180lbs. Some wouldn't guess that Hall of Famers' Yogi Berra and Joe Morgan are 5-7.

I'm guessing that JH's checkbook is a lot less than we think, and we won't do any $60 million plus signings. Trades will be the order of the day and for veterans having two or three year contracts or for younger, less costly players. Prior to the Padres for prospects has been mentioned on the site, and I would go for multi-player trade that gets us one of their available, lefty relievers, Joe Thatcher or John Hampton. Great Luck Jim Hendry! We're with you Win or Tie! JimK

  • Dorasaga

    Faithfuls,

Good news. This might be hotstove. I just heard from an interpreter from the Cubs organization: Fukudome has agreed to fly over here to Chicago and visit Wrigley this coming week before making his mind the end of December.

Cubs international scouting dept. seems to be doing a good job at establishing ties with Asian baseball.

Thanks to the interpreter for the scoop.

  • Dave in STL

C'mon Trader Jim... land us 1 of either Andre Either from LA, or Jeremy Hermida from FLA. I know the Dodgers are dark horse Santana players.. ship them Pie & Marshall for Either. They can then send Pie, Andy LaRoche, & Clayton Kershaw to Twins for Santana. If Ned Colletti was smart, he'd keep Pie, pay all of Pierre's contract and ship him to the Twins... Just Kidding, well not really, but that'd never happen. If Trader Jim wants Hermida, better get on it... Trading Miggy Cabrera will satisfy FLA's depth problems with high level prospects... so, get it done before the MC deal. Wouldn't you all rather have 1 of these 2 as opposed to Kosuke Fukudome? I've seen these two play & hit & field in the NL for 2+ seasons... to send prospects who won't see Wrigley anyway seems immaterial to getting the "proven" piece for an NL penant.

  • Aaron

Ok. I know this is probably not realistic for the Cubs, but how about Andruw Jones in RF? I know he doesn't fit the profile Jim Hendry is looking for (which is a left-handed slugger) and he's probably too expensive. He had a down year last year, but he's still only 30 years old with plenty of pop in his bat. And as we all know, he's a stud defensively and I think a move to RF would take less of a toll on his body. Then, we could hang on to Felix Pie and let the kid develop. We all know Pie can play great defense, but he hasn't figured out how to hit yet. Let Pie hit 7th or 8th in the order until he figures it out. Can you imagine this OF?

    LF-Soriano

    CF-Pie

    RF-A. Jones

I know Andruw Jones isn't left-handed, but so what?? Anyway, it might not be possible financially, but I think it's worth considering. GO CUBS!!

  • Rick

I know there was a lot of interesting points on this post last week on the merits (or lack thereof) of "player potential".

Think of this. The Twins are demanding that Ellsbury is part of any package from the RedSox for Santana. By inserting Ellsbury the Sox have taken Buchholz and Lester out of the deal, leaving two other prospects injected with Ellsbury. Ellsbury started all of 33 games last year for the Sox. Think the Twins believe this kid has potential?

Now if I'm the Sox I'd take that deal. Santana included in the Sox rotation, and you don't lose a Buchholz or Lester in the process. Wow.

  • Bryan

Wow, was surprised to see all the hostility directed on Sam Fuld yesterday. He's a young kid with only six major league at-bats. Geez. The kids plays hard and has solid plate discipline (he actually knows a ball from a strike).

I wonder how many here would have thrown Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury under the bus based on their 2007 season starts, but they ultimately were the lightening rod for Boston. We need to have patience with our young kids, and instill some faith in them. Same goes for Theriot. The guy plays hard every-day, and just finished his first year as a starter. A quickly we forget how wonderful an improvement he is over Neifi Perez.

IF we can land a Fukodome, the addition of him and Soto everyday in the lineup should provide a spark to the offense (and you can enjoy the Pie/Fuld competition).

As a sidenote, how interesting that no-one's heard from Prior directly. His silence I think speaks volumes that he wants out of Chicago.
