Important Off-Season Dates

The 2007 World Series will start in either Cleveland or Boston on Wednesday and the Rockies are in Denver waiting to find out which team they will face. The other 27 teams are preparing for the off-season ahead, here are a few important dates to mark your winter calendar with....

Free-Agent Filing Period begins the day after the World Series. Teams have 15 days to negotiate with their player before the player enters the open market. After 15 days a player may sign a new contract with any team.

November

  • 5-8 - General Manager's Meetings in Orlando, Florida
  • 7 - Weekend Passes for 23rd Annual Cubs Convention on Sale

  • 20 - Day to file reserve lists for all Minor League levels and Major Leagues
  • 20 - Last Date to make an off-season outright assignment of an injured player to the Minor Leagues if the player does not meet the requirements listed in Article XIX(C)(b) of the Basic Agreement

BBWAA Awards Dates

  • November 12 - National League and American League Rookie of the Year Awards Announced
  • November 13 - American League Cy Young Award Announced
  • November 14 - National League and American League Manager of the Year Awards Announced
  • November 15 - National League Cy Young Award Announced
  • November 19 - American League Most Valuable Player Award Announced
  • November 20 - National League Most Valuable Player Award Announced

December

  • 1 - Last day for teams to offer salary arbitration to ranked free agents in order to be eligible for compensation
  • 3-6 - Baseball's Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee
  • 6 - Major League Rule 5 Draft
  • 7 - Player deadline to accept salary arbitration
  • 12 - Last date to tender contracts

January 2008

  • 5-15 - Salary Arbitration Filing period
  • 18-20 - 23rd Annual Cubs Convention
  • 18 - Exchange of salary arbitration figures between MLB Labor Relations Committee and MLB Players Association

February 2008

  • 1-21 - Salary Arbitration Hearings
  • 14 - Voluntary reporting dates for pitchers and catchers to Spring Training Camps
  • 19 - Voluntary reporting date for other players to Spring Training Camps
  • 26 - Mandatory reporting date to Spring Training Camps

March 2008

  • 30 - MLB Opening Day - Teams must finalize their 25-man roster by this date
  • 31 - Cubs Open the 2008 Season against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field
