Game One Hundred Fifty-Eight: Cubs (83-74) vs. Marlins (67-90)
Game Time - 6:05pm C.T. Comcast SportsNet, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 185
Location - Dolphin Stadium, Miami

Jason Marquis (12-8, 4.35/1.34) vs. Daniel Barone (1-3, 5.40/1.63)

Only 5 games left.... The Cubs find themselves in another "must win game" tonight. While the Cubs still have a 2-game lead, they must win the final two series of the year in order to secure a spot in the post season. The Cubs control their own destiny but need to put runs on the board in bunches tonight against a pitcher they have never faced before, and it all starts with Jason Marquis.

Today figures to be Jason Marquis' last start of the regular season. Lou Piniella stated last week that if the Cubs have to play game #163, Marquis would likely get the start....let's hope that decision never has to be made. Jason Marquis was having a good month until his last outing against the Pirates. Marquis hit the proverbial wall and had little to no command. Marquis lasted just 2 2/3 innings, his second shortest outing of the season and allowed 7 runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. He threw just 55 pitches, so he should be well rested.

Marquis faced the Marlins in the series at Wrigley at the end of May. He allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits in 5 innings. Marquis is 4-4 in 16 games, 9 career starts against the Marlins with a 6.85 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.

The Cubs will get their first look at Daniel Barone tonight. Barone was the 11th round pick of the Marlins in the 2004 draft and has made 5 starts for the Marlins this season, with 10 appearances out of the pen....his only big league victory came in relief.

Barone was a combined 8-3 with a 3.96 ERA (23 starts) in Double-A and Triple-A this past year. He was 7-0 with the Albuquerque Isotopes of the PCL with a 4.09 ERA.

Barone has made only 1 start since September 2nd, but 9 total appearances. The Cubs must be patient at the plate and make the rookie work. In his last start against the Braves in Atlanta on September 19th, Barone gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 4 1/3 innings on 72 pitches....the most he has thrown in a big league game since August 26th.

Piniella must not fill his lineup with lefties tonight. Barone splits against right handers versus left handers are worth noting....righties hit .349 with a .407 OBP while lefties hit .238 with a .338 OBP, 8 of the 10 home runs hit off of Barone have come off of right handed bats.

Barone is 0-3 in 5 starts with a 8.31 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP....as a reliever, 1-0 with a 1.15 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.

Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

  • Chad

Indeed. Sleep well Cubdom. We either have one helluva a celebration coming in the next few days, or one helluva pity party.

  • Chad

Couldn't agree more Matt. And I think his defense is even more important than his offense.

Lou said that this was the time for experience, not a time to experiment or get cute. I love Lou, but what happened to playing the hot hand? What happened to playing the guy who was getting the job done?

  • Ryan R

    Chad,

Thanks. I see that the Cards actually helped us tonight. 4 games to go and up by 2. Can we please beat those fish tommorow?

Also, don't think that the Reds having lost Dunn and Griffey are going to roll over. That Voto kid can really hit. Plus we have to face Harang, and not to mention the Cincy media has been hypeing this series for a week talking about how they are going to knock us off. Anyway too much thinking. I'm going to have a shot of Kentucky's finest and go to bed.

  • Neil

I never thought I would say this....THANK YOU ST. LOUIS!!!

  • Matt Haggard

    From Cubs.com

Quote of the day: "We started out yesterday with three mulligans in our pocket, and we hit one out of bounds. Now we're down to two. Let's hope we don't have to use these other two." -- Piniella

    My sentiments exactly.

  • nick

That kind of stinks especially the way Soto has been hitting the ball. Well Cards finally did us a favor, what better time that now than too take this into our own hands!!

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    Cardinals win!

    3

  • Matt Haggard

Soto's arm and bat warrants his starting.

  • Chad

nick, I can't believe that Lou has decided to go with Kendall the rest of the way. Check the notes on Cubs.com. Argh!!!

Ryan, the playoffs were scheduled months ago and both NL series' begin on the same day. The AL start on different days.

  • Ryan R

My next question is, how is it that MLB allows the team with the most wins in the Al to choose the playoff starting date, but not the equal team from the NL?

  • nick

Thanks Chad. Alright, tomorrow Lou finally gets there heads screwd on srtaight.

  • Chad

I agree Ryan. Also, teams that are built for 162 game season may not be as well suited for a short series. Beckett and Willis. Schilling and Johnson. Schilling and Pedro.

  • Chad

nick, yes 3 to win, 2 toe clinch a tie.

  • Chad

    Ryan,

I agree, but they had been warned and it was obvious. Last night, Yost and LaRussa screamed at each other from the dugouts. Tonight when Fielder was hit, he stared into the dugout at LaRussa who didn't flinch. The warnings were issued.

Top of the 8th, Cards ahead 3-2. Pujols leading off the inning. Milwaukee has both Turnbow and McClung warming up. Yost chose McClung to the surprise of the Brewer announcers. 1st pitch was behind Pujols, but did hit his elbow. It was obvious and a wonderful gift to our Cubbies. The worm has turned.

  • nick

I know this might be a dumb question, but if the Cards hold on and win tonight the magic # goes down to three right?

  • Ryan R

Chad, IMO it has something to do with fighting to get into the playoffs. Teams that clinch early I think get a little lazy and it comes back to haunt them in the playoffs. Didn't the Wild Card team win the WS like 4 years in a row at one point?

  • Chad

After last weekend, it would be a major disappointment to not win the division. But if we back in, even if we are 3 and out, I will deem this season a success. But as it has already been stated, October has turned into a Madness like March's.

I heard an incredible stat on ESPN Radio this morning: since 2000, the team with the better record has won only 36% of playoff series'.

  • Ryan R

Much as I like to see the Brewers implode. I still say the umps should stay out of it. Hitting Pujhols and letting it go would probably have been the end of it.

  • Austin

WTF! I come back from the library and we lost. To the Marlins...wow. Thank God the Brewers are losing because are really trying to just give them this thing. I hope the Pads sack up and pitch Peavy. Like the rest of you, ill be amazed if my heart (physically) makes it through this.

  • Ryan R

Man, i can't beleive I flew half way across the country to find we lost to the Marlins, again, and I find myself rooting for the Cardinals. Strange days.

Also, I have yet to figure out who or what makes theese MLB schedules. We started the year on the road at Cincy. We finish the year on the road at Cincy. How is it that we both begin and end the year on the road at all? Then, the Padres play tonight in SF, and fly 3/4 of the way across the country in the middle of the night to play again tommorow night in Milwaukee. How the hell is that fair? Sorry for the rant, must have been the thin air at 40,000 feet........

  • Chad

OK, so the Yost would rather level a score in a beanball incident rather than just try to win. He knew the Cubs final already. I am so happy he didn't wait until next year sometime to get even.

How does that go again? Pride cometh before the fall, or something like that.

  • Shirey

Such a beatiful thing when another team does what we would expect our boys to do. I can't be the first guy here to say this, but given the recent trend of teams stumbling into the post-season (or like the BoSox, almost stumbling out of the post-season), I think we just might be "bad" enough to win it all. 7-2 Cards, by the way.

  • Trevor

Thank you St. Louis! Hold the lead now!

  • Matt Haggard

    Cardinals with a cushion!

  • Neil

The Brewers just hit Pujols.... The Cards hit Fielder earlier in the game.

    Matt....well said man!!!

Yost was just ejected for the third time this week.

  • Matt Haggard

I feel pouty as hell I admit. I really do, but its not over. I just want to get to the show in October, I really do. Its all I want. Go Cubs! I really hope I can party with the CCO when the time comes.

  • baron

    good point matt!

its tough to sit through 3 hours of this kind of performance though.. it wears down the nerves and everything else..

  • Shaun

Well said Matt, baseball is a weird sport and one that I will never be able to comprehend. I listened to Stoney this morning on the score and he put it perfectly. "If the Cubs cant beat the Marlins and the Reds head to head they do not deserve to be in the postseason." I couldnt agree with him more. Lets go get em' tomorrow.

  • Matt Haggard

I agree with that. Did I say "we almost made it?" NO! Were in first place regardless tonight. Youre a fool if you wouldnt deny the Cubs just because they back into the playoffs which is what they are trying to do.

Quit sipping whatever bottle youre holding onto now and read me right. If the Brewers lose, tonight means little. You got that? We would keep a 2 game lead with 4 left. Think on that.

  • baron

    Matt,

if the cubs don't get into the playoffs, this season had to be marked as a complete and utter failure -- any other explanation like 'well, they almost made it... aww, gee whiz! is pure loser talk...

  • Matt Haggard

Baseball has ups and downs, this is a down. We back in and win some October ball, thats an up, bottom line.

  • Matt Haggard

Would you rather not get in at all. Come on, sometimes you people kill me with the pessimism. I just want in, I dont care how. The Cards backed into it last year and won it all. Jesus. I just want in, and as a fan, so should you. Your rediculous if you would rather watch someone else in October.

  • Boseph Heyden

I will not miss Jason Kendall after this season. I will miss Daryle Ward, though, if they are dumb enough to not resign him.

  • baron

    a mulligan??

this has to be the most absurd sentiment in the world... pretty please Cardindals -- win for us -- so we can backdoor into the post-season...

  • Matt Haggard

Let nervousness kick in after the results of the Cardinal Brewer game..If things stay as they are, we call this a mulligan, alright?

  • Matt Haggard

Let nervousness kick in after the results of the Cardinal Brewer game..If things stay as they are, we call this a mulligan, alright?

  • baron

we are getting destroyed by a 90 loss team...2 consecutive games.... it is disgraceful and shameful..

  • baron

we have to be VERY VERY AFRAID now.....

Lou has done a dreadful job tonight.... Kept Marquis in and he got smacked like a rag doll... when he realized his folly -- his solution -- send marmol out for 2....

what is kerry wood doing on this roster... pitching only 7-1 blowout wins??? he shoudl have been into the game in the 3rd inning..

    this is revolting!

  • david

well...hopefully the cards can hold on to their lead

  • Neil

David, yes they do. This is their WS, if they keep the Cubs from the post season.

  • david

seventh pitcher for the marlins to protect the lead...are they thinking this is game 7 of the world series??

  • Mark

We can't even beat the freakin last place, shitiest team in MLB? Then you don't deserve to win the division, we're going to get our asses taken to town for another failure in the playoffs, IF we do win the NL central. MY GOD!!!!!!!

  • nick

UN FREAKIN REAL!!! Please tell me this isn't so??!!!

  • baron

note that the marlins have a payroll of $30 million. exactly 40% of the Cubs....

and Marquis is pitching game 163... lovely! lou needs a lobotomy.

  • ZH

    God I hate the Marlins.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

Someone should drll Hermeida. Payback for Greenburg.

He could stay in a coma for all I care.

  • Neil

    WOW!!! C'mon offense!!!!

    Cabrera did it again!!

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

This team is friggin clown shoes!

This is the biggest choke job since (Well take your pick)

  • Trevor

baron, i think i hear the same guy on WGN radio..he's having himself a good time!

  • baron

dunno if any of you guys are watching mlb.com

there is a loud and hilarious cubs fan who can be heard drowning out the fsn florida announcers with short, snappy, drunken, obnoxious comments ...

    its cracking me up11

  • Trevor

Cory, did you see last night when Eckstein had a routine grounder hit to him and had a TON of time to throw and he set up and AIR MAILED it over Pujols' head (who made a half ass jump by the way)?

I'm not saying the Cards are throwing games, but they certainly aren't playing inspired ball to help us out either.

  • Cory

You guys wont BELIEVE what I just saw! With guys on 1st and 2nd and 1 out Thompson got the ground ball he needed right to Ryan who flipped it to Aaron Miles who...put it in his pocket!!!! He didn't even attempt a throw! On the replay when Miles had the ball the runner wasn't even in the picture! Of course the next batter is Braun and he immediately hits a ground rule double!!! This is a conspiracy!! I'm not kidding!

P.s. God bless you for not drinking Neil Lord knows I do enough for everyone on this site.

I seriously cant believe what I just saw...it was almost as gay as Aramis striking out on 3 pitches with guys on 1st and 3rd and 1 out to some toolbox!

  • Ryan

Could someone post the score cause my computer is being dumb and wont load any sites where i could find it including cubs.com!

  • baron

nice comeback, marquis.. i gotta admit.. i might have panicked too early!!

  • baron

this st louis lineup tonite is very shady...

    i don't recognize 1 name except pujols...

    VERY SHADY!

  • baron

you are a brave man, Neil!

  • Neil

Baron....100% sober, I do not drink.

  • baron

    Neil,

Don't tell me you are teetotaling your way through this... what do you have, ice blood?

  • Neil

Cory, every team plays their best against the Cubs.

  • baron

    Cory,

Capn Morgan's the way to go... Tonic water goes straight to the gut.....

  • Cory

Lead off hit.....wierd...time for more Grey Goose!!!!

  • Cory

Soriano you were just struck out by a looser with over a 10 era....you rock!

  • baron

cause this is the 1908 Cubs...

    27 yanks are pups!

  • Cory

Pulling your pitcher after 3 and 2/3rd in a tie ball game and yor team is 22 games under .500? Man why does everyone treat us like the 27 Yankees?

  • baron

this game is the season... we gotta get this..

  • Matt Haggard

So that makes up for the error, I forgive ya man!

  • baron

seriously, how can you leave Marquis in this game... He is getting ROCKED!!!! what is lou doin?

  • JIm (Tinley Park)

They are playing like crap and they are going to choke this season away. Now I know why Marquis was left off the playoff roster last year.

    Thanks!

  • baron

    YESSSS!!!

cmon man --- we gotta get this!!! I will have an aneurysm if we don't

  • Matt Haggard

    Stay Tuned, right? Haha. D-lee!!

  • Neil

WOW!!! Somebody wake them up....doubled off 1st....no excuse!!

  • baron

26 hits and 6 walks given by Marquis in his last 15 innings.. The Cubs need to be REAL REAL careful with this guy....

  • baron

YANK HIM RIGHT NOW... 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings... trying to clinch.... #$#$#^%%$$$^%%

  • baron

Marquis ABSOLUTELY HAS TO have a VERY SHORT LEASH tonight

  • Matt Haggard

Jesus, Ron is having a baby tonight..

  • Neil

    Way to go Jacque!!!!

Make this kid work...get into their pen.

  • baron

    YESSSSS!!!!!

    JJ -- clutch baby!

  • Matt Haggard

Good goin Dero! Its like what you guys have been saying, make this guy work and he'll give you a bunch of mistakes to hit.

  • baron

Neil, are you inside my head?

  • Neil

They made the rookie throw 10 pitches in the 1st inning....WOW!!!!!!!?????!!!!!

  • baron

the rookie, Dave Barone who has 17 walks in 37 innings threw 10 pitches in the 1st inning... are you serious?

    whats friggin goin on here!!!

  • Chad

    Go Cubs Go!!!

  • Neil

    Tonight's lineup....

    Soriano - LF

    Theriot - SS

    Lee - 1B

    Floyd - RF

    Ramirez - 3B

    DeRosa - 2B

    Jones - CF

    Kendall - C

    Marquis - P

  • Austin

All I have to say is: Im glad Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez are right handed after looking at those splits. Also, good news to hear about Dunn (now along with Griffey) out for the season. Should help immensly over the weekend. Anyway, I have FAITH in Marquis tonight that he will get it done and hopefully the Brewers will lose. Go Cubbies! Let Go Get It!
