According to several reports out of Chicago, Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs have agreed to a 5-year, $90 million dollar deal that is expected to be officially announced at a 10:15am press conference.

Updated - 9:36am C.T. - Ken Rosenthal from FoxSports is reporting Zambrano's new deal is 5-years, $91.5 million with a 6th year player option worth $19.25 million. The contract will give Zambrano the highest average salary ever awarded to a pitcher on a multi-year contract and his new contract will also pay him the highest average salary ever in Chicago Cubs history.

Will update when more information becomes available.

Agustin thinks the Zambrano signing is a very important one. He also thinks that JH has done a very, very good job this year...especially not jeopardizing our farm. I have to praise when deserved. Good job JH.

BTW good addition to the club that JJ guy after the all-star

Thank the Lord, My Jerseys still worth something!!!

Where this becomes an even bigger deal is what would have happened if he hadn't signed. The Yanks and Mets would have come after him hard and the price would have been in Arod territory because (quoting Fox Sports)...

"His signing removes by far the most accomplished pitcher from this winter's free-agent market. Red Sox right-hander Curt Schilling, Diamondbacks right-hander Livan Hernandez, Phillies right-hander Kyle Lohse are among the other free agents who will be available."

When there's only one "must have" everyone goes nuts.

Who would we have replaced him with? One of those guys??? Please. In the big picture, those guys likely will get $9-10 mil a year... so this is a great signing for the Cubbies to stay in contention for the future.

    WAY TO GO HENDRY!!!!

If they just signed the contract today, then I'm chalking up those last two games to this being a distraction and looking forward to Z get win 15 Sunday.

Finally!!! Good job by the Cubs front office, all be it a slow one. They cost themselves an extra 16 million or so, by waiting this long, but it is still a nice hometown discount. Hopefully Carlos will get back to his June/July form now that he has his deal.

    Go Cubbies!!!

$90M over 5 years at 35 starts per year and 100 pitches per game give Z a nice $5k per pitch! Not bad.

  • Trevor

Great to see Z is going to be around for a while!

Also, I wonder if this will have a nice psychological boost for the Cubs?

  • Scott

    Awesome, Big Z!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nick

Good, I agree Nathaniel, he could have gotten a lot more on the market.

  • Nathanael

HALLELUJAH! That's the best news from the Cubs in quite a while. This is awesome. He would have got so much more as a free agent.
