Game One Hundred Thirty-One: Cubs (67-63) vs. Brewers (65-66)
Game Time - 7:05pm C.T. Comcast SportsNet, WGN Radio, XM Radio Channel 184
Location - Wrigley Field, Chicago

Carlos Zambrano (14-10, 3.95/1.33) vs. Ben Sheets (10-4, 3.39/1.16)

The Cubs will look to take the all-important second game of the series tonight behind their ace, Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano will match up for the second time this season against Ben Sheets, who will make his first start since July 14th. Zambrano beat Sheet back on April 7th in Milwaukee, but that was then and right now neither team is sure what they will get out of their ace. While Sheets will be making his first start in 6 weeks, Zambrano has not pitched the way he is capable, with the exception of 3 innings, since the end of July.

The Brewers announced on Tuesday night that rookie left-hander, Manny Para will make his third career start in the series finale. A solid night from the offense against the Brewers' All-Star would be a good way to get into a rhythm, but it all starts with Carlos Zambrano.

Carlos Zambrano has to step it up tonight, to say he has been bad this month would be an understatement. Zambrano started off the rain-shortened game against the Cardinals and was unhittable but his last start against the Giants was sub-par to say the least. Zambrano walked the bases loaded against the Giants, with the third walk given to the pitcher Matt Cain. Then 2 innings later, Zambrano gave up a 2-run home run to Matt Cain....not exactly the performance the Cubs were hoping for after opening the vault door less than a week prior.

Zambrano was lights out in June and July and was even named the best pitcher in the NL in July but he has been far from that of late. Zambrano is 0-3 in this last 4 starts with a 7.04 ERA with a 8.50 ERA in his last 3 starts. Zambrano must get back on track....and quickly.

Tonight will be Zambrano's 4th start of the season against the Brewers. He won his first game of the season in Milwaukee on April 7th (3 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings) and received a no-decision 2 weeks later a Wrigley (2 runs on 5 hits in 5 1/3 innings). On June 6th, the first game after his season started, Zambrano beat the Brewers and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 2/3 innings while setting a season-high in strikeouts (at the time) with 9. Zambrano is 2-0 in 3 starts against the Brewers this season with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.

Ben Sheets has been on the DL since Mid-July with torn tissue around the tendon in his middle finger. The Brewers thought he would return last week against the Giants but Sheets has been having blister problems and that delayed his return.

Sheets left the game on July 14th against the Rockies in the 4th inning and was placed on the DL the next day with a distal sprain of his right middle finger. Before that, he had been dominating. Sheets was 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA in 6 starts in June that included a great performance against the Cubs at Wrigley on June 30th. Sheets gave up 4 runs on 6 hits in 8 innings with a walk and a season-high, 11 strikeouts.

Sheets is 8-7 in 21 career starts against the Cubs with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. In 3 starts this season, Sheets is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.

The Brewers are looking for a big outing from Sheets, at least 5 to 6 innings. If the overly aggressive Cubs can be patient at the plate, Ned Yost will be forced to use his pen earlier than he would like.

Welcome to Zambrano vs. Sheets - Round 2.... If both are on, this should be an extremely well-pitched game.

Let's Talk Cubs Baseball....

I love reading the comments. What a range of view between the wins and losses. Hey, we can't win them all. And we can't lose them all. Get them tomorrow. I still feel good where we stand right now. Go Cubs!!!!

  • baron

and lets not go ga-ga over Theriot... hes a gritty player with a terrific attitude -- but he made a HUGE error today --- and has left 8 men on base in 2 games..... not exactly Jose Reyes.

  • Cory

The thing that bothers me is as good as Zambrano was in July he is equally as bad in August. What's his excuse for his last two starts now that he's signed his contract?

Was it San Fran his last start he sucked now a free-falling Brewer's team?!!??...at home! WTF!?!

I hate to be negative, i'm 38 years old and seen alot of Cubs B.S. throughout the years but man! Look at our payroll! If we were in the East or West we'd be like 6 games out.

We're lucky to be in the "Comedy Central" and we can't put our foot on the necks of suck ass teams? I live in Iowa and get Brewers and Cardinals games on satallite...they are not good ball clubs and they have no where near our salary!

Aram what 18 hr's? Soriano..look at his stats v.s. what they're paying him! Dee Lee I wont even go there! I'm gonna stop before you all hate me.

I love this site i'm just going outta my mind!

  • Chad

Aaron, thanks for that info on the playoff rosters.

  • baron

seriously, why don't they just start Wood if he takes time to warm up...

Enough Kid Gloves with him... if hes going to get injured, so be it... he is not exactly playing a key bullpen role right now -- he is doing what gallagher, ohman, Eyre do ---

He is 100 times better than Marquis as a starter... If we can get 4-5 good starts from him -- it doesnt matter about the rest.... On stuff, he could be the #1 guy over Zambrano... hes being wasted in a role hes not suited for, and is doing only a so-so job at

  • nick

Neil, I don't think it was his worst outing, but the Brewers first two runs were with two outs, as the so called Ace of the staff he needs to get the outs with out the runners scoring.

Aaron I agree at least we will still be in first place, but this was a game where our Ace needed to step up so we could put some distance between us and the brewers, and the Cards who are losing. Man we needed this one. Looks like we turn to Lilly tomorrow to save the series.

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

    I've said this before:

Carlos Zambrano is NOT a #1 guy. This guy sucks on opening day, the month of April and he is 0-3 in the playoffs. Back in 2003 he also sucked during August and September. But hey, he's great during June and July.

  • baron

yikes...our old boy Farnsworth is throwing 99 and getting rocked by the Red Sox

  • Aaron

well, i think our timely hitting sucks, zambrano sucks, and DeRosa kills our rallies with DP's so much lately I think I'm gonna have an aneurysm...but we still are 2 games up on STL, and if they lose tonight, we'll stay that way, and still be 1 1/2 up on the Brew Crew. Unfortunately, we've never seemed ready or resilient enough to battle through games like this and come back, and put distance between us and the rest

  • Cory

    WHOOPEE!

  • Matt Haggard

We're also still first place, regardless of the outcome.

  • Cory

    we suck

  • Boseph Heyden

We just paid a lot of money for a pitcher who's best games are behind him, didn't we?

  • Aaron

wow...Mark DeRosa is so clutch grounding into DP time after time.....it's getting ridiculous. Anyone have a stat on how many he's grounded into....he has to be leading the team...and now Z's having another one of his meltdowns

  • Neil

    Any thoughts on Zambrano's outing?

  • Cory

Good Lord we are melting down BAD!!! How in the hell did we only score 1 damn run against Sheets?!?!! Errors!! Errors!!Errors!! I'm gonna go Elvis and shoot my t.v.!

  • nick

    AAARRRGGGG!!!!!!!!!

  • nick

This is not good at ALL!!!!

  • Neil

Baron, Brenley is growing on me but I have always been a big Steve Stone fan. With all the talk about Brenly possibly going to the Reds next year, hopefully, if he does, Stone will return.

Nick, well said on the bunting practice.

  • nick

Alright time to get through this inning and take it to there bullpen again.

    Aaron thanks for the info.

I think tomorrow before the game this team needs bunting practice for about three hours.

  • baron

    Hey Neil,

How do you rate Bob vs. Stoney as a color guy... He's a nice guy -- but I personally think he lacks the charisma and wit that stoney had.. I miss that dude in the box.

  • Neil

Thanks Aaron... I am interested in Kevin Hart, he has had a good year.

  • Matt Haggard

    Thanks Aaron, very cool read

  • Aaron

    guys...just some info about call-ups I found:

"I don't see any problem with Will coming back," general manager Jim Hendry said before Wednesday's game. "He's throwing the ball better. I don't want to go name by name, but we're not going to be short. We'll wind up with 32-34 guys by probably the 5th or 6th of September."

Hendry said the Cubs will call up a few players at a time, including 3-4 on Saturday, the first day rosters can expand. Ohman, Geovany Soto, Carmen Pignatiello, Eric Patterson and Ronny Cedeno are likely to get the call from Iowa, and the Cubs will also need a starting pitcher for a Sept. 15 double-header in St. Louis.

Sean Gallagher is a candidate. Another darkhorse is right-hander Kevin Hart, who was acquired from Baltimore last December for outfielder Freddie Bynum. Hart is 4-1 at Iowa with a 3.54 ERA, after going 7-5 with a 4.45 ERA at Double-A Tennessee.

"He's 9-1 since the middle of June, so he's going to have a start this week," Hendry said.

Hendry said fans shouldn't put too much stock into the 25-man roster at the end of Aug. 31, the day before call-ups, because the Cubs can substitute players on the postseason roster by replacing guys currently on the disabled list: Mark Prior, Angel Guzman, Roberto Novoa and Pagan.

"Everyone makes a bigger deal out of this than it is," Hendry said. "You're allowed not only your 25, but an inventory of everybody that's on your DL, including 60-day DL guys. And they're all wild cards. You can substitute anyone from the system for Mark Prior, and they can be on the playoff roster. ... Everybody thinks if you're not in the dugout by Saturday, you're not eligible. It couldn't be farther from the truth.

"All the rule is for, is you cannot have someone from outside the organization who is not here by Saturday, added to the playoff roster."

just thought it'd be an interesting read for you fellas...

Nick, I too am concerned about baseruners being left on.. I mean, c'mon...a leadoff double, guy moves him over, and we still can't score....unbelievable

  • Neil

Both of their runs have come with 2 outs...

  • nick

How many times is he going to hit Weeks, my gosh, come on Z!!

  • nick

    Hello Fellas,

Just got done cleaning our decorative fish pond, I am about ready to fill it in, but that is another story. Back to the game. Gotta take advantage of these base runners!

  • Jeremy

DeRosa's leads off with a double and doesn't score...

  • Neil

That's 4 left in scoring position....

  • Neil

    Fielder and Hart....

Will someone please take his sunglasses away?

  • Jeremy

    thanks, Brian.

Nice strikeout by Z to finish off the first inning.

  • Brian

Cliff Floyd ran into the wall catching Weeks' fly ball. He seems to be ok (stayed in).

  • Jeremy

    there's an "injury delay".

    who's injured?

  • Jim (Tinley Park)

Same lineup as last night, hopefully same result.

  • Neil

    Tonight's lineup:

    Soriano - LF

    Theriot - SS

    Lee - 1B

    Ramirez - 3B

    Floyd - RF

    DeRosa - 2B

    Jones - CF

    Kendall - C

    Zambrano - P
