Updated – 11:31am C.T. – With Roster Moves from the Wire…. Scott Moore was recalled from Triple-A Iowa and Daryle Ward was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday morning according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. Moore will start on Friday against the Diamondbacks at 1st base with Mike Fontenot hitting 3rd for Lou Piniella. Ryan Dempster was activated from the DL and Sean Gallagher was optioned to Iowa.

The Cubs open a 3-game series this afternoon with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D’backs just lost 3 of 4 to the Brewers in Milwaukee and have a young, talented team. The Cubs are expected to activate Ryan Dempster from the DL before today’s game and according to a report in the Chicago Tribune, they will likely send Sean Gallagher back to Iowa to make room for Dempster on the active roster. Daryle Ward could go on the DL today and the Tribune speculated that Ronny Cedeno or Felix Pie could be recalled to take his roster spot. The status of Cliff Floyd is also unknown and with Derrek Lee serving his suspension, Piniella will have to rely on Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and even Jacque Jones to keep his club in the win column. But is all starts with Jason Marquis.

Jason Marquis is coming off a horrible start against the Astros last Sunday and has not pitched past the 5th inning in his last 2 outings. After a tremendous performance against the Brewers on July 1st, Marquis has allowed 12 runs on 16 hits in 8 2/3 innings (12.47 ERA). He has allowed 3 home runs in his last 2 games and is not throwing strikes while leaving everything up. After recording 12 groundball outs against the Brewers to just 4 fly ball outs he has recorded 10 groundouts and 10 fly ball outs in his last 2 games. Today is Marquis’ 20th start of the season.

Marquis is 1-3 in 7 career games, 6 starts, against the D’backs in his career with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.

  • Conor Jackson – 2-5, with a double, a home run and a RBI
  • Chad Tracy – 1-11, with 3 walks

The D’backs are the last NL team that the Cubs have yet to face this season and they will run out their ace, Brandon Webb. After a tremendous June (4-2 with a 1.76 ERA in 6 starts) he has struggled in his last 3 starts. Webb is 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA (13 runs, 12 earned, on 23 hits in 18 2/3 innings). Webb throws strikes, and a lot of them. He has struck out 22 and walked just 7 in his last 3 games.

Webb is 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP on the road this season while he is 3-4 with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP at home. Webb has never lost to the Cubs and is 4-0 in 6 career starts with a 2.52 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. He is 2-0 in 3 starts at Wrigley with a 3.10 ERA and a 1.18 WIP.

  • Cliff Floyd – 4-15, with a double and 2 RBI’s
  • Jason Kendall – 2-7
  • Angel Pagan – 2-3, with a double
  • Aramis Ramirez – 4-18, with a home run and 3 RBI’s
