The Cubs activated Juan Mateo this past week from the 15-day DL and optioned him to Single-A Peoria. Mateo was placed on the DL back in March with an impingement in his right shoulder. Mateo made his first start of the season on Sunday against the Beloit Snappers and gave up 4 runs, all earned, on 6 hits in 3 innings while striking out 1.
The Cubs also transferred Mark Prior to the 60-day DL on Friday to make room on the 40-man roster for Koyie Hill. Juan Mateo’s first outing of the season was a shaky one to say the least. Mateo gave up a 3-run home run to Danny Santiesteban and doubles to Wilson Ramos and Daniel Valencia. He also threw a wild pitch and hit a batter but kept the ball down and recorded 6 groundouts to 2 fly outs. Mateo did load the bases in the 1st inning but worked his way out of the trouble and did not allow a run after an inning ending double play….the Chiefs lost the game 14-4. The Beloit Snappers is the Single-A farm team of the Minnesota Twins. The Chiefs are 8 1/2 games back of the Snappers in the Mid Western division.
