Jones Remains a Cub, Dempster to the DL and Miller Transferred

There is never a boring day at 1060 West Addison. Several reports on Tuesday afternoon stated the Cubs had traded Jacque Jones, cash and a PTBNL to the Florida Marlins for a Class-A prospect. Jones had not been informed of the deal according to Ken Rosenthal and the deal hit what Rosenthal called a "major snag". Jones was in uniform and in the dugout on Tuesday night against the Rockies.

Ryan Dempster was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to Saturday with a strained left oblique likely ending his first half of the season. Dempster would be eligible to come off the DL on July 7th. To make room for Billy Petrick on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred Wade Miller to the 60-day DL.

According to a report from Paul Sullivan, Jim Hendry said, "It wasn't really a good deal for us." According to the Palm Beach Post the deal that would have sent Jones to the Marlins made it to the commissioner's office and the deal would have been Jones, a PTBNL and $1 million dollars for a Class-A prospect from the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Palm Beach Post stated the Marlins probably wanted the Cubs to pay more of Jones' salary than the reported million dollars.

The Cubs aren't going to be sold until the offseason.

Well, how long is this sell gonna take. This is rediculous. I read the thing about ownership as well. This is so stupid. We need improvements as we are surely in this race.

  • Austin

Steve, it said the TRIBUNE wouldn't allow it, but when they sell the Cubs, the new owner will surely continue to run the club as it has been...we are fine.

  • Steve

I should've said (any additional expense).

  • Steve

ESPN radio said that the Tribune won't authorize any expense over 1 million for next year. So JJ can rest easy. Bye, bye Carlos. Not a chance Junior. Kiss any chance of improving the club beyond this season good-bye.

    Trevor:

Very true and until Zell sells the team we are pretty much looking at the team as is. The thinks that really sucks is that this team won't be sold until after the 2007 season. This means that the we will probably be missing out on free agents for next year.

  • Trevor

Matt: A florida newspaper is reporting that the Cubs front office had approved the deal, but that Sam Zell is the one who actually balked at the idea and put an ax to it. Interesting. If thats true then Trader Jim's hands are legitimately tied this season. The Cubs will only be able to make deals that Zell thinks are good, which in all likelihood, won't be very many.

(Although I think Zell was right on this deal, it didn't look good at all for the Cubs.)

Thats a joke, the Marlins really thought wed do that?!?! Thank God Jimmy H. didnt get screwed over by Florida two years in a row!
