According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, Ronny Cedeno will be optioned to Triple-A Iowa in order to make room on the 25-man roster for Angel Guzman. The Tribune reports seeing Cedeno "packing his bags" and Cedeno apparently told reporters "he didn't walk to talk about his demotion."

Updated - 5/06/07 - 3:13pm C.T. - The Cubs optioned Ronny Cedeno to Triple-A Iowa before Sunday's game against the Nationals to make room on the 25-man roster for Angel Guzman.

The apparent demotion of Cedeno to Iowa would leave Felix Pie in Chicago. With the Cubs in need of a 5th starter many had speculated the call-up of Guzman would result in either Cedeno or Pie being sent down.

Ronny Cedeno has struggled this season hitting .097 in limited at bats with two home runs and the infamous base running gaffe a few weeks back. Felix Pie has shown he has the talent to play at the big league level, especially in the field. Pie has struggled at the plate hitting just .229 (11-48) with a .245 OBP but 5 of his 11 hits have been for extra bases (2 doubles, a triple and a home run) and he has scored 6 runs and driven in 4.

I agree that Cedeno needs to be playing everyday at AAA to try and regain some confidence and start hitting again. However, something needs to happen via trade regarding the outfield jam. Floyd, Murton, Jones, Pie, Soriano...and you can make a pretty good argument for each of them to be starting right now. (Jones has always been streaky but right now he is streaking the right way, so have to keep playing him). Pie has to get a lot of bats in order to progress at the plate, Sori is not going to get benched..

My take, and its been said multiple times by others, let Jones heat up and then quickly find someone to give us a 5th starter for him. Regardless of what Guzman does today, an extra starter could come in handy as injuries always happen. And Guzman could then shift back to the bullpen where he was lights out earlier in the year.

I was really hoping that Izzy would leave, but now that I think about it, I think this is the right move. Cedeno will get to play every day and maybe figure out what the heck is going on. Izzy is the backup and does play decent defense, this year aside. As long as Pie gets a decent amount of playig time, I think that keeping him in the bigs is a good thing. Soriano has taken him under his wing and thats definitely a good thing. I was a little worried about Soriano's attitude going into the season, but so far it seems to be great. I think Lou has something to do with that. Of course, if I was playing on the Nationals last year, I think I'd have a crappy attitude also. He could have easily seen Pie as a threat, but instead seems to have really taken to the kid. Soriano is enough of a proffessional I think to realize that once Pie gets going in the bigs that the Cubs can be awesome.

It's the right move, God I hope Guzman can be the answer for the 5th starter. It looks like the NL central is better than forecasted. Milwaukee and the Cubs figure to duke it out, while Pittsburgh,

Cincy and Houston all being thorns in the side. As strange as it sounds, we may have to cheer for the Cardinals to help us out later in the year.
